I remember when everyone was getting on Jerry for the contract he gave Romo, and I the time I kept thinking, what a hugely team friendly deal this was. He definitely could have gotten more on the market if he wanted.

Already Romo is only the 10th highest paid quarterback in the league, getting paid less than the likes of Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Ryan Tannehill, Colin Kaepernick, and Jay Cutler.

Romo averages 18 million per year on his contract. Compare this to the 17 million a year Alex Smith gets. With new contracts for Luck, Wilson, RG3, Romo will likely drop at least two spots on the list, putting him closer to the middle of the pack.

The investments this team has made on the offensive line will ensure Romo remains productive where other teams will see their offenses fall apart.

We're also paying basically nothing for Weeden, who despite his struggles probably had the best year of his career last year. I don't think his growth in this system should be ignored. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cowboys lock Weeden up to be Romo's career backup.

I agree the contract looks pretty team friendly at this point, although there is the added risk given his age and back. On Brandon Weeden, I don't think he is even an NFL quarterback. He does not seem to be able to make reads and go through his progressions. If Vaughan doesn't beat him out, we need to find a better backup.

Every player can get more money on the open market than negotiating with a single team. How much would Cleveland pay for a Cam or Romo in unrestricted free agency?

Also how are you defining 10th highest paid? I've seen Romo's deal ranked as about the 6th best deal in football. Putting Colin ahead of Romo for instance makes me think you don't know how to evaluate NFL contracts.

Cowboys too would be surprised. They know what they have in Weeden.

Vaughn is the guy who will get the majority of preseason reps to see what he has. (Boys website)

As much as people are down on Weeden this team could have went out and got Schuab or McCoy and they didn't. They stuck with Weeden. That should tell you something.

You just said a guy who attempted 41 passes last season had a career year. That should tell you something.

Weeden had one good series vs. the Commanders, and padded his stats in garbage time with a TD throw vs. INDY.

But when he was handed the keys to the car vs. Zona, he showed he was the same incompetent QB he was in Cleveland.

That the team knows we are screwed if Romo goes down? So why spend over the minimum for guys who can't get it done for you anyways?

Wouldnt surprise me. Figure if he has a season ending injury why bother. But if 2 or 3 weeks maybe weeden could pick up a win

All I have to say about Weedens performance last year against Arizona is that I would expect that from a rookie undrafted FA QB in Vaughn...

But to have that from a former 1st round pick whose had a few starts under his belt... and is an "older" guy... that is was really got me livid

Weeden not only played poorly against Arizona, he looked completely lost on the field. I don't care how well he can toss a pigskin in practice if he looks at an aggressive game day defense with a deer in the headlights expression. May as well have had Vaughan out there getting valuable thrown to the wolves snaps.

Cost us homefield advantage too and probably a Super Bowl.

Defense played well that day for 3.5 quarters and even got a INT TD. Weeden completely spit the bit and should have been cut immediately after.

We probably don't win that game with Romo.

ARI has owned us recently.

Romo's deal was the perfect balance of taking care of a star QB and being team friendly.

It was structured to help the cap and the staggered guarantees took care of Romo but left some wiggle room if he got hurt.

It was basically a 4yr/68m extension that covered 2014-2017.

Anyone who didn't like this deal is probably just a Romo hater.
