Are we rotating because it's a philosophy we have for our defense or are we rotating because we don't have superstar pro bowl caliber players on defense. I have a hard time believing coach Rod would rotate Brooks Sapp Lynch Barber so on and so forth.

I believe we rotate to keep everyone fresh, so they're not as worn out by the 4th quarter.

I think it's a combination of both. Lack of top end talent, and we want to keep people fresh. Also, Garrett saw first hand how well a defensive line rotation worked in the mid 90s with top end talent.

Jimmy rotated the DL on the 92 and 93 Super Bowl teams.
The backups in 92:
Chad Hennings
Leon Lett
Jimmie Jones
Jim Jeffcoat
Tony Hill

Greg Hardy averaged 76% on the defensive snaps in the 12 games he played in 2015. He has a game high of 96% in week 7 that year.

Nobody can amass that kind of depth in this age for more than a year.

I wonder how the snap range was for that era.

It's the defensive strategy. They talked about it a few seasons ago, saying they were pursuing the SEA model for building a deep, heavy rotation of players.

That's pretty much what they've gone about doing. No superstars, but they have tried to upgrade talent across the board.

I would say that Bennett and Avril have been a strong backbone. Might not be superstars, but a lot better than average.

That is their baseline. We have not got to that yet.

Yep. Neither guy was a huge addition at the time, though. They proved to be good pick ups.

Our defense, overall, can't hold a candle to that SEA defense of a few years back. But we are basically following that model of building a line 8 men deep and rotating them both in terms of position and playing time.

You answered your own question. You have a rotation when you lack talent.

I think you rotate these days even if you have big talent on the DL. The early 90s DL rotated although some got more snaps. Even a D Ware comes out occasionally. If you're Randy White etc then you just get more snaps.

Yep. We do lack talent, but we'd be rotating even if we didn't.
