the formula to calculate ERA is

( # of earned runs X 9) / (# of innings pitched)

however, you cannot divide by 0....

so what is a pitcher's ERA if he gives up 1 run but pitches 0 innings (he doesnt get an out)?

what about if the pitcher gives up 10 runs and but pitches 0 innings?

would his ERA have to wait to be calculated until he gets that first out of the season?

It's INF... stands for infinite. Same thing with WHIP until an out is recorded.
