Question about Jaylon Smith contract

I just went to over the cap dot-com and it says jalen's in the last year of his contract. that can't be right because he missed his first year so doesn't that automatically add an extra year to his contract?
I thought he would be RFA after
He missed his first season due to injury and yes, he's an UFA in 2021, not 2020. RFA in 2020
thats the way I understand it. 2019 last year of his contract and then RFA. Though I expect them to sign him after 19

It's all about accrued time. Basically, if a player is gets paid for 6 games and isn't on IR or PUP, then a season is accrued. Jaylon began the 2016 season on PUP. PUP is good for 6 weeks and then there's a 6 week window to make a decision on what to do with the player. Neither PUP time nor that window count toward accrual. After the window, we placed him on IR - which also doesn't count toward accrual.

After 2019 he will have spent 4 years in the league with 3 years of accrued time. A player who finishes their contract with < 4 years of accrued time becomes a RFA.

As others have said: 2019 RFA, 2020 UFA

Time on the IR counts and so does PUP if you are getting paid in full

JSmith was officially on the NFI list- Non Football Injury .... not the PUP... it was reported that he was paid in full by the Cowboys the whole time..... that would mean the season counts and he is a FA in 2020

Interesting. I know they "activated" him off the NFI in November(16), but he never officially made the 53 man roster.
I would assume since he was never active, he never gained experience.

Spotrac, which shows him as an UFA in 2020, only shows 2 years experience, while M. Collins has 3 years experience.
Teams have the right to not pay the guys on the NFI and they won't accrue a year of service but it was reported DAL paid his whole year one salary in full so his contract did not toll or pause

He should be an Unrestricted FA in 2020

Maybe IR does count, but PUP/NFI doesn't.

Per the CBA:

"For the purposes of calculating Accrued Seasons under this Agreement, a player shall receive one Accrued Season for each season during which he was on, or should have been on, full pay status for a total of six or more regular season games, but which, irrespective of the player’s pay status, shall not include games for which the player was on: (i) the Exempt Commissioner Permission List, (ii) the Reserve PUP List as a result of a nonfootball injury, or (iii) a Club’s Practice Squad."

That would be 6 games PUP/NFI. 6 game activation window. 5 games IR - and 5 games of accrued time.

Edit: Oops I noticed in the previous post I said after the 2019 season he'd be a RFA in 2019. That doesn't make sense. 2020 RFA. 2021 UFA.

But it also says this:

Section 2. Physically Unable to Perform
: Any player placed on a Physically Unable to Perform list (“PUP”) will be paid his full Paragraph 5 Salary while on such list. His con-tract will not be tolled for the period he is on PUP, except in the last year of his contract, when the player’s contract will be tolled if he is still physically unable to perform his football services as of the sixth regular season game.

Section 3. Nonfootball Injury
a) A player who is placed on a Nonfootball Injury or Illness list (“N-F/I”) will not be entitled to any compensation under his contract while on such list but, except as provided below, his contract will continue to run while in such status

Don't think so. RFA after the 2019 season and UFA after the 2020 season. Maybe that's what you mean. We will probably give him a first round tender as RFA in the 2020 offseason, that gives us a chance to match any offer from another team or we get their first round draft pick. Expect big things from young Jedi Smith

He plays the 2020 season under the first round tender assuming no one offers him outrageous dollars. Could tag him or write a new contract for the 2021 football season.I probablyjust lost your meaning in translation

His situation is complicated. Most sports writers know less than posters here about CBA and cap.
My understanding is he will be RFA after this season. I would assume if he was a UFA after this season they would be working on signing him now. The fact we paid him seems to be the complicating factor though I can’t imagine drafting a player and telling him no pay your first year. What would a player live on for a year?
I’m sure some team has drafted a player and not paid him but seems like a crappy thing to do

JSmith made a few million of an insurance policy for slipping out of the 1st round

But even guys on the Practice Squad make 7000 a week and guys on the IR can make 1/2 their salary

I think DAL promised to treat him right like they did with LCollins and I expect an extension during this season

Better start saving money. We can’t pay everyone. We have a very short window. And it’s shrinking every year.

Smart kid having insurance

He was widely considered the top talent in the 2016 draft. Even if he had slipped to 5th overall, Jaylen Ramsey got 23.4 Milllion over 4 years in that spot. The way it stands now Jaylon has 5 Million in career earnings with another 1.4 Million coming in 2019 in his 4th year.

From that math he lost 18 Million from the injury minus whatever the insurancy policy paid him.

He didn't say lucky.... he said smart

I heard he got up to 5m which is equal to almost 10m in salary because it is tax-free

The Cowboys sign Smith to a 4 year contract in 2016. The Cowboys elected to pay Smith even though he was on the physically unable to play list so I believe his rookie year counts and as such will be a RFA after the 2019 season. He'll be a RFA even though the 4 year contract is up because he was only on the active roster for 3 years and 3 years or less makes him a RFA.

What makes you think any money a NFL player makes is tax free? There will always be federal taxes and now that the courts have said that players who play with the team in other states, those states can now collect taxes on their income. Just because Texas has no income taxes doesn't mean Smith won't pay taxes on his earnings.

Guess we may hear more this offseason as the 16 class will be due new deals by the end of this upcoming season.

The Cowboys could of elected to pay him for the year as an offer of good faith, but I just don't see how it could count as experience. I'll read up on section 3.
His contract did run in such status as it did burn a year off the 4 year deal.

Good talk, like these type of discussions.
