I'm curious... this may be common knowledge but it isn't to me so this is why I am asking...

since the Cowboys next 3 possible opponents are Lions, Packers and Giants (oh my)...

whats the strategy curriculum/logistics or whatever like?

would there be scouts (or whoever teams have for starting to work out a strategy plan)... going to these two wildcard games and working to develop a strategy for our next opponents?

or do they just watch the game on TV (before the all 22) and work from here or what? I wouldn't imagine they wait to see who they play to start working they probably are working on all 3 potential opponents and then narrowing it down on either Sat or Sun depending.

any idea? Just curious. I know it may be stupid question, and im not sure if i asked it right, but im curious about the planning and strategy involved on our next opponent.

You're not getting any scouting off of TV broadcasts. The camera angles focus solely on the ball. From my understanding of scouting it's about down distance personnel groupings field position time on clock and obviously what's ran with said above factors. The tendencies of each team factor into the gameplan. I could be wrong but that's my understanding of what goes on.

no you are probably right. that's why i asked. you all are more knowledgeable than i on this so hence my questioning. i was thinking about this and i imagine they pay good money for this stuff so they probably fly people out to go scout the games (even if Lions look like a long shot there at the CLink). Gives them a chance to catch or see new wrinkles in real time to the playbook on any opponent. Or do they do something else?

Scouting involves charting each play, down and distance, formations, tendencies etc. It's not really at all like watching a game in my experience. Your mindset is different and usually players and coaches are watching a particular group.

They've played all of the teams. I'd wager that GB is getting the lion's share of attention right now simply due to the fact that they see NY twice a year and played Detroit two weeks ago. They'll have guys at all the games and they'll get film quickly. Right now I'd say their schedule is pretty crazy because I suspect they're also using the extra time to look at Seattle and Atlanta a little bit having played neither.

There are way more knowledgeable posters on this subject than me lol. But From my understanding at this level I would think it's all game film that is studied and broken down. Game plans are developed based on the tendencies of the team you are playing.

that makes sense. so they are flying guys out to all these games than?

They could be but with the level of technology we have I don't think that would he necessary in this day and age.
Yeah maybe not legal in the NFL. I was speaking from my own experience and we had some great tech but still got sent out to scout whenever possible. There are things that don't show up on the film.

Ah good point but I was thinking more along the lines of the all 22

This next game for all 3 potential opponents is a small piece of the work involved

We have 16 other games of tape on each opponent..it's already been said that the team began studying each of the 3 this week

No matter who our opponent is, everyone, coaches included, will want to run them into the ground with a heavy dose of a rested and energetic Zeke Elliott. The problem is that these are playoff teams, and they are not going to allow Zeke to run against them early in the game and get that OL going. Everyone is going to stack the box to stop the run and run stunts and blitzes if necessary to force Dak to execute without mistakes through the air. Fans will cry, as usual...."why are we passing it and not running"....but any team can stop the run game in its tracks if they really want to do so. Dak will have to make some plays early and prove the speed and excitement of the playoffs isn't too much for him; then teams will back off a little, and Zeke will take over. Unlike the regular season, if our defense holds up at all, I see Zeke getting 25-30 carries per game, easily.

wish I could see a documentary on NFL scouts or something. seems like one of those things thats not covered much.
Honestly I've been kind of interested in this aspect as well. I don't even know the names of any our scouts, and yet I'm sure they play a big part in everything as they are (I'm guessing) the eyes and ears of the coaches and front office... doing all the grunt work of gathering as much data as possible on potential roster acquisitions, other team's tendencies, etc.

Then again I'm also not as knowledgeable on this stuff as many others here, lol.

Actually Jason Garrett said when asked about the schedule for these 2 weeks....he said he will watch the playoff games, as there are certain things you will see and hear to pick up on, that you do not get on game film.

Offensively Dallas has to continue to do what they have done all year and that is being balanced. Use the run game to set up down and distance that is favorable to keep defense off balance and keep them guessing.

Defensively NY, GB and Det all rely a lot on their passing game Cowboys will need that front to bring pressure and secondary continue to disguise coverage as they work between man and zone coverages.

I know it is the playoffs but you still have to continue to play to your own strength only difference is margin of error becomes smaller and every drive, every snap becomes more important than before.

As a coach, I've been in this situation a couple of times over the years. What worked for me was breaking down both teams and looking for things that both teams have in common, such as secondary coverage, blocking style, defensive fronts etc. Then we use the bye week working on those during group work. We also focus a lot on individual drills.

Sounds like a solid strategy to me, probably how I would do it as well.
