Let me preface this post by saying that this is not a “bash Parcells” thread. I believe that Parcells was indisputably crucial in Romo’s development as a complete QB.

In yesterday’s press conference, Wade was talking about Romo, and was very complimentary, heaping praise on just about every facet of his game.

He then said (paraphrasing),

Wade Phillips said:
“When he steps into the huddle, and says to the guys, ‘OK – now let’s go get it done,’ they believe in him ... and I believe in him too.”

This was a truly amazing comment to me. Think about Parcells’ press conferences. Can you imaging him ever making such a statement? Again, I’m not condemning Tuna’s approach – just drawing the contrast to his “put the anointing oil away” public stance.

What makes this completely interesting to me is to see if Wade’s type of leadership style continues to bring out the best in this team. Everybody responds differently to a particular type of leadership approach.

I have always felt that the carrot is a more effective tool than the stick when it comes to a team’s overall performance.

We are getting to see this experiment play out on the field with our own team every week.

Very cool indeed.

Bill Parcells and his accomplishments or lack is a touchy subject on this board.

Me personally... we wouldnt be where we are without him. I feel he did so much... yet he could have done more... but I will take it.

We have some great pieces in place. Even his stubborn philosophy probably helped us in the big picture. This team seems to want explode on teams this year... they feel like last season was cut short.

This season is cleary... "unfinished business" just like in a rematch of two championship fighters.

Great point - I agree completely.

We'll see if a positive motivational leadership style is final piece of the puzzle.

I believe on some level the game has begun to pass Parcells by. What hasn't left him is his ability to judge talent. I believe that Parcells views of how football should be played are sound, but have not evolved with the game and we saw it last season. Parcells believes in playing the fundamentals and if you play the fundamentals, you will have less mistakes and therefore win most of your games. (Think San Antonio Spurs and Tim Duncan)

As for the way he treats his players, he applies pressure and the players that can handle pressure will float to the top and then he clears off what doesn't float and replaces it with something that will. That is how he finds talent and that is why the Cowboys are loaded with talent.

Now, with all the Cowboys talent and Parcells gone, we have a lot of guys that have proven they can play under pressure. Now we have guys that know how to work, know how to win, have fun, and winning is fun. This is why I believe this team can be something special. Everyone is happy and everyone believes they can win, and winning makes everyone happy.

I think at this stage of his career Parcells offers much more as a GM than he does a coach.

Can't hurt anymore than having competence (and dareIsay -dominance?) at FS and RG.

Bring the warm and fuzzies on. We'll sing ****ing Kum-bay-yah and make S'mores.

It takes both the stick and the carrot. The secret is in knowing when to use which.

Parcells taught these guys how to win.

Wade is teaching them how to enjoy it.

It is possible that Parcells may have said something like that this season. Romo has had a whole off season to develop his game as the starter. Being the number one guy during workouts, mini camps, training camp and pre-seasons can do a lot for a QB. Romo this year is not the same Romo of last year because he has faced a whole different situation. At this point last season Romo had yet to take a snap at QB. When Romo did play and did well he still had a lot left to face. Now he has face many of those situations. Romo is different because of more experience and that may have changed Parcells attitude about him if he were still coach.

You use the stick right as the reach for the carrot. Right?

I agree. And that thought process takes nothing away from what BP did nor what Wade is doing.

Tho on BP's public stance on putting the anointing oil away. I don't have a problem with it considering he hadn't played all that much. Tho it was the exact opposite as to how he applauded Julius' debut in his rookie season.

Parcells would probably make a good GM, but his coaching style isn't condusive to todays game. Redstinks are having this same issue in Gibbs. These guys who were used to being successful, then leaving the game and coming back, they seem to not want to change to the style of ball going on today and how you treat players today.

Back in the day, older guys could get away with callin kids punks in their faces, and the young guys would respect it. Now a days, you call a young guy a punk, you might get shot.

Parcells did have an eye for talent, but I also believe that he got cute in the draft in the earlier rounds.

"at the end of the day" :D

If we win #6... my thoughts will probably go to Bill Parcells first.
He was given a job to do "clean the refrig and stock it was some quality goods" - HE did that.

I think that smart people will give him more credit than less if we win the big one. As opposed to "he couldnt get it done".

I am of the former... not the latter.

Dare I say, "Next years champions are here a year early" :D

Why do some people get so upset when Parcells is mentioned in less than glowing terms? If we were 0-3 right now, you can bet our coaching would be getting bashed, and rightfully so. But we're undefeated so far, and people are giving credit. What's wrong with that?

But back to Wade's philosophy, I remember Charlie Waters saying when the hire was made that "Wade willl have these guys believing they're world-beaters." His personality is totally different than Jimmy's but he reminds me of Jimmy in that he thinks players will play as you treat them. Remember that from Jimmy? If you treat a player like he's an excellent player and you believe in him, you'll get his best. If you act like he's not that good, he'll play like that instead.

This has been proven in tons of psychological studies, including the famous one where students were grouped into "high IQ" and "low IQ" classes, and treated as such. They performed to expectations -- even though the high IQ students were actually low IQ students, and vice-versa.

Uhmm who's upset in this thread? Or are you just referring to this post as a "not-to-bash" thread? Just curious.

On a side note, if people are upset when Parcells is criticized, why is it necessary to put one person down in order to lift someone up? That's something I see all the time on this board.

It's ok to appreciate everything that Wade is doing without even mentioning
Parcells. Same as it was ok to appreciate Romo without mentioning Bledsoe. Or appreciating Barber without mentioning Julius.

It's early, and injuries can derail this thing, but right now it looks like we might have a chance.

The foruth and 3 play was indictive of Wade's belief in his QB.

As far as Parcells, he stuck to his philosphies on offense and defense no matter the personell at hand. I still think he did a great job in building this team, but it just wasn't his way to adjust his philosphy no matter what the players we had. I think flexibility is an importatnt criteria in this day and age of free agency.

I was, too. I think I know who CL might think is upset, but I assure you, it ain't so. ;)
