But back to Wade's philosophy, I remember Charlie Waters saying when the hire was made that "Wade willl have these guys believing they're world-beaters." His personality is totally different than Jimmy's but he reminds me of Jimmy in that he thinks players will play as you treat them. Remember that from Jimmy? If you treat a player like he's an excellent player and you believe in him, you'll get his best. If you act like he's not that good, he'll play like that instead.

This has been proven in tons of psychological studies, including the famous one where students were grouped into "high IQ" and "low IQ" classes, and treated as such. They performed to expectations -- even though the high IQ students were actually low IQ students, and vice-versa.

Excellent point, Choc. I believe 100% in the power of positive motivation and the studies which continue to back it up.

Again, the contribution to this team from Tuna cannot be underscored enough (as far as I'm concerned). I just get the feeling that the "positive motivation" approach is going to take the talent that Parcells assembled (and the work ethic he instilled) to another level.

It's like one of those psychological studies you mentioned playing out on the field every week before our eyes.

Very interesting to observe (at least to me)!

Parcells taught these guys how to win.

Wade is teaching them how to enjoy it.

I'd say that Parcells taught the team what it takes to win (work ethic, technique, etc.).

Wade is teaching them to believe that they are winners.

I believe on some level the game has begun to pass Parcells by. What hasn't left him is his ability to judge talent. I believe that Parcells views of how football should be played are sound, but have not evolved with the game and we saw it last season. Parcells believes in playing the fundamentals and if you play the fundamentals, you will have less mistakes and therefore win most of your games. (Think San Antonio Spurs and Tim Duncan)

As for the way he treats his players, he applies pressure and the players that can handle pressure will float to the top and then he clears off what doesn't float and replaces it with something that will. That is how he finds talent and that is why the Cowboys are loaded with talent.

Now, with all the Cowboys talent and Parcells gone, we have a lot of guys that have proven they can play under pressure. Now we have guys that know how to work, know how to win, have fun, and winning is fun. This is why I believe this team can be something special. Everyone is happy and everyone believes they can win, and winning makes everyone happy.

That was very well put NYC.

Something tells me we would be screaming for Wade's head if it wasn't for Garrett and Sporano.

I'm sorry but count me in the camp that would still take Bill Parcells over Wade Phillips if given the choice.

Do I think that Phillips has not done a good job? No, it's just that I get the feeling that the inmates are running the prison. That will work until you hit a losing streak and then you need a leader who can step up and show you how to turn it around.

I'm glad we are 3-0 but to Borrow a Jerry Jones line from a drunken stupor in a bar..." there are probably 100 coaches who could coach this team and win"...

Jerry was wrong then, I hope I'm wrong now. :star:

Why do some people get so upset when Parcells is mentioned in less than glowing terms? If we were 0-3 right now, you can bet our coaching would be getting bashed, and rightfully so. But we're undefeated so far, and people are giving credit. What's wrong with that?

But back to Wade's philosophy, I remember Charlie Waters saying when the hire was made that "Wade willl have these guys believing they're world-beaters." I don't believe that there is one style that fits every player. Paul Brown knew that and treated his players differently.

For Otto Graham, he praised and encouraged him and told him how great he could be. Graham needed to know he was doing the right things and that he was appreciated.

For Jim Brown, he always found something lacking even if he ran for 200+ yards and 4 TDs. Jimmy had to continue to push himself to be better or he would settle for where he was. Paul Brown never let him know he was satisfied with his performance and that was what motivated Jimmy.

Brown was a master at motivation because he got to know each of his players and what made them tick.

Guys like Landry, Halas, Lombardi, Parcells, Shula, Noll, Levy, Grant, Walsh, and others just have a particular way that they relate to the players and that is it. You are either motivated by it or you are not. A lot of players hated playing for those guys because they couldn't relate to how the coach treated them. It wasn't right or wrong, it just didn't work for them so they eventually moved on. Some found success in other systems, some could never find the right style.

Phillips' style doesn't work for every player and I'm sure that some guys on the team will miss Parcells' style while others are glad he is gone.

I can't remember who it was that said it, but they said...

When you play for Parcells you hate him and wish he would leave, but once he is gone you realize what a great coach and person to be around that he really is.
That isn't the exact quote, but it is close to what was said.
