Rams release Lance Freaking Dunbar

You’re actually making my earlier case for me. You don’t care about what he actually cost, or about his versatility as an inexpensive role player who wasn’t really used all that often.

You’re upset that he got injured and that he was talked up by the coaches like many utility players on just about every team.

running doesnt make you versatile.

I don't think he was ever rated all that high here. He was never more than a change of pace 3rd down back, and he never really even had fans who went to bat for him as anything more than that.

What he did get was a ration of hate from guys who thought he was an easy target or who didn't like him getting hurt from time to time. IIRC, he was on pace for about 80-90 receptions in 2015 after Demarco left and Romo went down playing under Brandon Weeden. For a 5'8" UDFA who could also return kicks for you, I never understood where the intense debate came from over the guy. So much debate over a little try-hard dude who was athletic enough to run between the tackles in a pinch and could split out and run every route we asked the receivers to run.

I meant overrated by the coaching staff more than the fans.

And no, I do not think it is fair to use a 3 game sample and say a player was on pace for something over a 16 game season but if he stayed healthy, he might’ve got those numbers because Weeden loved to check down.

Our big offseason move will be to bring back a player we cut two years ago. :yourock:

Four games, but the point was more that he had become one of Weeden's favorite targets for that quarter of a season. ~85 catch rate for a RB is a lot of production in the passing game. That was the season we were rolling with McFadden and Weeden and where Dez only played 8-9 games, so his production was high that first quarter season. He was outpacing Beasley and Williams that first quarter of the season, too. When he went down returning kicks in that Saints game, it was a fairly significant loss.

I'd agree. Especially since he was pretty limited between the tackles. But he also was a pretty good pass protector, plus he could play any of the three WR positions, so you could use him as either a runner or a passing option in the sets he was in. That's what made him versatile. Again, for a RB3, who got limited snaps like any other RB3 in the league.

Dunbar is better than the credit he has been given, his problem, is that anything that can get him hurt will.

I understand and I’m with you my friend. I’m over 40 myself.. I know for a fact our SB drought isn’t because Jerry hasn’t tried.. he’s tried over spending, and that was miserable due to the cap. He’s tried stepping back and letting a Coach like Parcells take full control.. that got us nowhere. Now he’s incorporating a collection of some of the “top” minds in football and letting Stephen take more control.. whether folks believe it or not.. it’s working. We have talent on this team, but unforeseen injuries/retirement/suspension to the likes of Romo, Tyron, Scandrick, Lawrence, Lee,, etc.. have derailed this team lately. I agree, the FO needs to get ahold of some “Bad” contracts.. but I also think they are working on that, yet the FO will not get credit for any of this. No one was saying we shouldn’t resign Dez when his contract was signed and Tyrons contract was considered “a steal” when he signed. We let the likes of Murray, Ware, Claiborne, Parnell, Bruce Carter, etc all walk when they wanted to get paid more than they were worth. One of the downsides of being a Cowboy is players get overhyped. If these players were playing on, let’s say, the Bills.. they would have never garnered the media attention to get over payed. Dez was a top five WR when Romo was throwing to him, now with Dak’s inaccuracies, folks think he’s washed up. Sorry for the rant. My point is.. the FO has started to build the team the right way tha last 2-3 years and that’s via the draft. And although Jerry is leaning more on the evaluators (Scouts/Will McClay), he still the exscape goat. I honestly believe Jerry would spend his fortune to get another SB win in Dallas. He’s come along way since the ‘Uncapped’ era of football and he deserve credit. There is only one SB Winning team each year, so 31 other teams could just hate thier “favorite” team.. or maybe, they could actually be truely loyal fans and support the team. I guess I’ve watched fans of the Bills, Browns, and (until last year) Eagles support thier team no matter what. It’s embarrassing as a Cowboy fan to listen to the garbage spoken ab the owner of the team they ‘so-call’ love.
I . stopped at Parcells, Bill had 2 seasons of no Jerry
Season 3 he began meddling.
If he released total control of the team for 4 years and just supplied the means
We'd be dancing the super bowl jig by now.
Sorry but I'll be *****ing about Jerry till his liver abandons ship.

Dunbar never really proved valuable enough for us to earn his keep.

I believe the Rams came to the same conclusion when they cut him.

I don’t really want to go back and forth but be he essentially had one game with Weeden—-he only played a few offensive snaps against the Saints.

I just don’t think it’s fair to basically take two good games and assume anything about him.

Where is all this "every player we cut goes on the be a star under better coaching on another team"? Let's see... Dunbar, Murray. I've heard Claiborne'ss name mentioned. Lucky can't be far behind. I think we should bring them all back since they've been coached up for awhile by superior coaches with superior teams. A good dose of sarcasm for breakfast:grin:

It's a common theme to try to build up players who aren't as good as some think.

I remember the same conversation when Maliek Collins was struggling and getting run over early in 2017 and never looked like the guy from 2016.

The fabrication then was that after a two-sack game against a scrub from Arizona, Collins was "on pace for 10-sacks!!!"

How'd that work out?

Dunbar was yet another one of those "secret sauce" players where somehow the Joneses thought they had one up on the rest of the league, only to fail yet again.

And like anything and everything with a star on it, fans made excuses for why it - and he - never worked out. And now want to revise history.

You guys crap me up if you Jerry Jones is the reason Dunbar was on the team so long.
Thats not a player he would prevent Garrett from cutting.

Was it 2 injuries on 3 carries, or 4? I forgot.

The problem with Dunbar when healthy was the coaches rarely used him. Was such a wasted roster spot. Sure he had ability to run/ catch out of the backfield but whats the point in doing that 1 time a game? These coaches hate to give non starters any play. With Dez only catching 50% of the passes his way their answer was to throw to him more instead of scheming something else.
