Teams will game plan for it, but then that will leave them open someplace else. There are only so many ways they can focus their attention, looking for the short passing game is much the same as looking for the run - it brings the deep guys closer to the line of scrimmage. That opens up the deep passing game. I personally prefer a bruising style, running to bring the safeties up, but if the short passes work I'll be happy with that as well.

Without Dez in the lineup for possibly up to 8 weeks the Cowboys are doing some scrambling trying to figure out how to offset his loss. They didn't have training camp to prepare for it and with him off the field and no Demarco Murray they have a very different offense than they rode to the playoffs last season. The offense has lost some real firepower. The way our receivers let Romo down on Sunday who knows what to expect in the coming weeks. The Cowboys are going to have to figure out a way to make up for Dez and Murray's production they accounted for a lot of it last season.

With the loss of Gregory and Hardy 3 games away from being added to the mix the pass rush wasn't very impressive and the Giants gashed us with the run on their final drive. The offense better be prepared to put up some points and without Dez and a solid ground game putting up a lot of points won't be easy. What concerns me is I don't think the Giants are a very good team and they had the Cowboys beat had it not been for a huge gaff with clock management. The Cowboys better start playing a lot better than they did last Sunday or this could be a long season. Seldom do you escape with a win like they did last week.

The Giants only had them beat because they netted 3 turnovers, two of which were extremely fortunate. The fumble was just a terrific play, but the interceptions were both lucky bounces of the ball combined with good reactions by the D. And at the same time we lost 2 turnovers, one on an inch - had the ball come out an instant sooner the guy's elbow wouldn't have been down and we would have had the ball. Then if Odell had taken one more step before getting his clock cleaned we'd have a turnover there. I'd say we were just very unlucky in the turnover department in that particular game, it happens.

Now the drops clearly need to be addressed, and Beasley needs to take better care of the ball and protect it with both hands when he's getting tackled - which he did towards the end of the game. But overall our team dominated the Giants, and with a 0 turnover differential that game would have been a laugher. Don't forget that we missed our first turnover by a hair on their first drive. So we held the ball 10 minutes, got jobbed with the no-call on the pass interference, but still came away with 3 points. Then we were in inch from getting the ball back immediately. Had that happened the Giants could easily have been out of the game before the first quarter ended. Their offense was simply unable to do anything after the first drive until the very end.

We didn't protect the ball, they got some extremely lucky breaks, and we had some drops. Two of those three things are easily correctable, and I expect a much better result in those departments Sunday.

If Romo is forced to put the ball up 40-plus times too often it's going to lead to some turnovers. I said prior to the season the more he has to throw his int's will go up. They'll be games his receivers let him down like last Sunday and they'll be some games where he's off. The mistakes, lack of a solid running game and not being able to get the ball to Dez much kept the Giants in the game giving them an opportunity to win. Let's face it that was an ugly game and the Cowboys were very fortunate to escape with a win. They'll be facing much better teams including NE and they'll get hammered by the Pats if they don't clean it up and play better.

I expect much better play going forward. I honestly think that a big part of the problem against the Giants was the fact that our team played almost no snaps in the preseason. They were not always on the same page, and made some very basic errors. But they got it tuned up by the end of the game, and I think they'll continue to play at a high level from here on out. But the team won't be at full strength until after the bye, so if we lose some games between now and then I'll just accept it as the price for having backups playing starting roles. I want to see us run better this week, but if we need to use the short passing game and it works I'll be fine with that. I am basically hoping they tread water until we get some guys back. Winning in Philly with our injuries and suspensions is a tall order, but it is not out of the realm of possibility, and if we win this game we might just bury the Eagles - that city will implode if they start 0 - 2.

They didn't control the ball last season by using the short passing game so we'll have to see how long it remains effective because teams will game plan for it. Short passes to the backs have to be well executed or you can take some losses putting yourself in some long down situations. This will be a different approach to what made the team successful last season if this is the plan to make up for what we lose in the running game.

They should've done this last season as well.

It's about time those type of passes became a staple of the offense.

If defense adjust that means they are pulling players out of the box or dropping a corner into a zone and letting our WR go 1 on 1 with a safety. So please adjust.

You need to have discussions with posters that have actually played the game. Your wasting you time...

Can't argue with anything they did last season look at the results. With Dez off the field TWill be covered by every teams top corner and Witten is likely to get doubled a lot. With no Dez to worry about defenses will stack the box to stop the running game and force Romo to have to beat them. The Cowboys haven't had to be without Dez for this amount of time since he arrived. TWill is going to have to step up and this is an opportunity to get Escobar involved. He made a play Sunday Night so look for him to get involved more.

I agree and I also think it is time for Street to show he has something to offer.

Well hopefully he gets a chance he sure didn't do much to earn Romo's confidence last week.

You mean the receiver Street? How is he going to show up if Romo is not supposed to throw the ball...his back thing...you know, torque.

Both Randle and McFadden left plenty on the bone Sunday Night which forced Romo to attempt 45 passes the most he's attempted since the 2013 season. He was back doing what he had to do prior to last season and that's shouldering most of the load having to win a game. I'm stating facts and if you're looking to stir something up move on!

So three turnovers had nothing to do with forcing the pass? Really?

Our starters played some preseason snaps and most teams starters don't play much during preseason because everyone fears injuries. Street got a lot of snaps in preseason and had a gaff Sunday Night that could have ended up costing the Cowboys the game and Romo for the season. Romo got blocked and leveled on that int grimacing as he got up. The Giants weren't at full strength with Cruz and JPP out. Their DL isn't the same without JPP. The Cowboys are going to be facing some real challenges missing some of the players they had from last season. No Scandrick for the season, Dez for maybe 8 weeks and no Gregory for at least a couple of weeks is going to make things tough.

When Hardy is added it may take a couple of weeks to get him in game shape and the possibility of a soft tissue type injury exists because the Cowboys won't be able to ease him in they're going to need him on the field a lot. Right now it's too early to know where the Cowboys are it usually takes about 4-5 games for a team to establish their identity for that season. After opening day last season it looked as if the Cowboys would be as bad as advertised but they ended up being a very good team. They have a tough schedule the first half of the season and they have to figure out how to keep things togther until they start getting some players back.

lol Really!

It's a time thing that is not understood by a novice. The game is only so long, and passing the ball is faster than running the ball if you need to stay in the game. Good luck explaining that.

If the Cowboys were able to run the ball efficiently last week they wouldn't have had to force any throws. Anytime you throw the ball there's a chance it could lead to a turnover. It's a passing league but having your QB drop back 40 plus times opens the door for sacks, turnovers and your QB being injured. Throwing the ball as much as the Cowboys did last week hasn't been a recipe for success with this team.

That's ridiculous, the team was very well balanced when Beasley fumbled. They was short on time and timeouts before the INT prior to the half-again zero to do with a poor run game.

They were behind on the final INT and if I am not mistaken were set back because of a penalty during the drive.

Hard to make an argument the team was very well balanced with 45 passing attempts vs 23 rushing attempts. Last season the Cowboys had a physical offense with Murray carrying the load. There were games last season that reminded me of the way the great 90's teams won games by using their big OL and Emmitt. The great 90's teams never went away from that formula they won all 3 of their SB's with the same approach pound Emmitt and play solid defense. Go back to the Seattle game last season the Cowboys wore down the Legion of Doom with 28 rushing attempts by Murray. The Cowboys had 36 rushing attempts vs 32 passing attempts by Romo. Now that's what I call very well balanced. Murray's downhill running style took it all out of their defense by the 4th quarter and our D stepped up when the game was on the line. Short passes to the backs can be effective but if that's the plan this season to make up for any lack of running production the Cowboys will be going from a physical offense to a finesse type attack.

Hard to wear down defenses or protect a lead late in a game if you can't consistently run the ball. Let's say with 6 minutes left the Cowboys are up by 4 points if you have to resort to short passes to try and milk the clock any incompletion is going to stop the clock which is what you don't want in that situation. Short passes to the backs have to be well executed or they can be blown up by the defense resulting in a big loss and a long down situation. Many wondered why the Cowboys hung onto Dunbar and we saw why last Sunday. The Cowboys were clearly concerned about the running game the trade for Michael confirmed that so they were thinking extended runs via the short passing game. After the plays Dunbar made last week opponents will game plan and be prepared anytime he's in the game.

Everyone knows we're not going to pound him so they'll be looking for him as a receiver. The biggest concern is the loss of Dez without him it's going to create some real issues for our offense. You don't lose a receiver of his caliber and not feel it. Our worst nightmare was wondering what the Cowboys would be like without him and Murray now we're going to find out. Garrett said prior to the season that this isn't the same team as last years team and it certainly isn't the same team now. Not saying we're facing doom and gloom ahead but Sunday will give us a pretty good idea if we should be concerned. If the Cowboys were to get rolled by Philly then they'll be reason for real concern with the tough schedule coming up.
