Well boys this is how Danny boy does it. Notice the jump of $$$ from the third year to the 4th year. Chances are Randle-El is cut before that 4th year or restructures.

Just like leasing a car. Put down a lot of money for a down payment, get minimal installment payments and a big balloon payment at the end that is usually never paid. Not the most efficient way to get value out of your dollar, but evidently Snyder doesn't seem to care too much.

No Danny Boy is a smart man for that. This way the first couple years we see how Randle El fits into our system, and if we think we should continue with him. And it might not be the most bang for your buck, but Danny has alot of bucks, and with the way we think the cap is only going to increase, it was a very smart move.

so it is a 3-year deal with them having to rework before year 4. yep, that's how we got in trouble with Troy, Deion, etc.

He knows the cap will always go up and also those signing bonuses of 10mil are normally split in 2 with the other being a roster bonus in year three where then they can automatically turn it into a signing bonus which would spread it over the remaining 3 or 4 years left on the deal making the cap number less....and in trading futures...if these 2 or 3 WRs are just 29 when the big cap numbers hit and playing well, he can just restructure with their willingness or the market price by then might be average to what they are already contracted for. Its a way to do it and gets your targeted FAs.

Dallas did this in the 90's and sooner or later the bill comes due when you have back loaded contracts like this.

For a guy who scored 1 TD last year, I still laugh at the signing bonus.

What I dont understaond is why as a player would you sign there? Yes the answer is the money but after year 3 they bring you in the office and say restructure or be cut. Why go through this everytime Danny needs to bail out of cap hell. It is a good way to do things but as a player I dont need that kind of BS. You signed me to a contract I expect you to pay we just as you expect me to play out my contract. This is the BS that pisses me off. Quit signing there. You will be screwed.

The way I understand it, players don't lose money when a deal is restructured, they actually get more of it guaranteed but stretched out over the life of the contract to be less of a cap hit. It really is not that big of a deal.

Otherwise you would see a LOT less players willing to restructure.

If anything it potentially costs more money from Danny's pocket, especially if the player is injured or cut, but money is not a problem there obviously.

Because they cash in a huge bonus when they are 26 from Sndyer, knowing there is a very good chance they'll hit the open market again in 3 years. And at 29 and rake in another huge bonus. Like Lavar is about to do. They'll get two huge signing bonuses in the amount of time that most players only see 1.

Smart man the red midget has given away almost all your draft choices this year and next...how smart is that.

P.S. How many TD's did Randel El score last year?

Unless my math is off, cutting him after year three would cause a cap hit of $7 MM. Ouch.

What was the signing bonus amount?

Players are all about guaranteed money.. so this is always attractive.

Quick question.. I know it's called a signing bonus, but are the players paid in one lump sum at the time of signing, as the term would indicate, or is it also prorated over the course of the contract, just like the cap hit?

Well, it depends on when the 2nd part of the bonus comes due. Whether the roster bonus is guaranteed or not, etc.

The contract if done right could simply be being misrepresented as a monster contract when really it isn't.

Players are typically paid in one lump sum or over a 2 year window.
However it is indeed prorated over the contract or however long the CBA states it can be for that year, in this case it will be 5 years. Cap hits for released players count either fully against the current years cap ala LaVar Arrington this season, or when a player gets released in the summer it is spread out over 2 years.

I believe they're paid in one lump sum but the cap hit is prorated. If he's cut the team takes a hit for the remainder. The bonus was $11.5 MM over 7 years. If they cut after three years they take a $7MM hit. If they keep him they take $5MM hit.

I sure hope he's worth it. [/sarcasm]

I never really understood the argument that "we can afford to pay more because the cap always goes up". It goes up for everyone, and as we can see by this offseason that more money in your wallet doesn't necessarily mean more free agents - but it does mean more expensive contracts. Contracts go up to every year, too, you see. That's called inflation.
