Random Dez Thought

Totally random, but I thought it after seeing Dez tackled yesterday, and was curious if anyone else thinks this.

Is Dez one of the clumsiest athletic guys in the NFL?

What I mean is that he always looks so awkward and out of control and like he is flailing around when he gets tackled. I know he is fighting for yards, but he just looks stiff or something at times. Anyone else think so? No?

Dez is good. Real good.

What keeps him from great:

1. He doesn't extend arms for a catch, especially straight up into the air. That's part of the reason why he looks "clumsy", agreed not the right word but I will leave it in for my point. He leaves defender in the play when reaching up could take defender out of the play.

2. IMO, he should catch a jump ball in end zone 8-10 times. Doesn't happen and I don't know why?

3. The great receivers made catches even when double teamed. Not happening yet.

I think some people need to read the thread before responding :) .... the word clumsy had already been rejected before you posted. :)

And I think some people need to stop being so self centered and realize that other people in the thread have used the word clumsy to describe other players like Witten and Murray.:)

Well most people don't usually break those for huge yards.

That quick pass to the wr is essentially a run. Get you 5 yards and keeps you ahead of the chains.

Fair enough, but how often does Dez ever break them? And not just for TDs, I'm talking about a modest 15-yard gain.

He just isn't that kind of player, which is why I'm surprised at how many short passes we throw to him. Guys like Antonio Brown or Percy Harvin can take those throws and turn them into big plays. It's like we think Dez has the same "take it to the house" ability as T.O. in his prime.

I was referring more to his ability in the open field with the ball in his hands. He usually doesn't do much with those short completions.
Yep... I'm always surprised when he catches a short pass and *doesn't* shrug off the DB and make about 15 more yards. You know those DBs have to be soiling themselves when they're in that situation. But they usually do get him on the ground.

I can only guess they're so aware of how dangerous he is that they really concentrate on getting him down.

He's so slow that guys just run past him and miss lol

Some guys are deceptively fast...Witten is deceptively slow

Sorry dude. There is nothing deceptive about his slowness...

It would seem that he breaks up field and the entire d-line catches up to him ... Lol

Murray makes guys miss in close space (gets him that yard or 5 when it looks like there is nothing), but can't help but find a defender when he is in open space :)

It seems to me like he trips a lot over himself in the open field.

Witten clumsy! How can you can an excellent rout runner clumsy? How clumsy did he look breaking up that sure TD last week with less than a second to react.

While Dez looks athletic and powerful, he does not always look graceful or smooth. In some ways he doesn't always look the prettiest, but he is very effective. Reminds me of Karl Malone.

Guys with a lot of graceful movements look like they aren't trying. That doesn't mean they are better, but it looks effortless. Rod Carew had those graceful, smooth movements. Enough in fact that at times people would question his effort. The effort seems to ooze off of Dez with every step. You can definitely tell when he is giving it his all.

Excluding Calvin, where is the proof of Aj,Julio and demaryous beating double teams? I'm guessing they are (elite). I watch all three get taken out of games just as easily as Dez.

I feel Dez can be closer to Calvin than the ones you mentioned.

I agree. Beating double teams comes with the offensive scheme...no one is beating double teams on hitches and out routes. Pick plays, crossing routes, and motion do wonders to combat double teams. Dez is just as capable of "going up for it" as the others mentioned; outside of CJ and that is mainly due to his height.

Dez doesn't really have short area quickness.....he isn't a great change of direction runner. He does have fabulous body control however.

Not sure about the OPs premise, but I am beginning to think they need to move Dez to safety.

I used to think that, however, we are in Dez's 5th year in the NFL -- closer to the middle of his career than the beginning and I think I've seen enough 313 catches in his career that D will really come close to the physical ability of Calvin at his peak.

I'm ok with that. We should all be ok with that. Megatron is a once in a quarter century player. Heck, he is probably the most physical imposing WR in the history of the league.

Dez is a very good, Top 5 WR.

Now, Witt amazes me because he definitely looks "stiff" and yet he can sometimes put a move on a guy. I look at Witt sometimes and wonder how he ever gets open.

Me too man. Back in the day, he actually looked normal running. Like the play in Philly where he loses his helmet, and is still going down the field like a tough SOB. Stiff arming and all. Now he just catches the ball, running slow as can be and awkward looking and falls down. I mean he's Mr Reliable and always knows where to be but it's just funny seeing him run around. But he's been consistent for about 10 years now.

That Karl Malone comparison is very good
