I don’t know why laterals are not a bigger part of the game.

A hook & ladder gives you a chance at having such an explosive play that I don’t see why it’s not used more.

Usually the guy getting pitched too is in space so the play is relatively safe and the risk reward just seems worth it.

You see guys like Kelce who look to lateral from time to time.

Defenders do it quite often after intercepting a ball.

I think as the game evolves we start to see more laterals and it is very underutilized in my opinion.

Do you know why we do see more of them?

Risk. You have a player on the move trying to pitch the ball to another player on the move. That's a fumble waiting to happen.

And not only is the player on the move trying to pitch the ball, but he's attempting to do it after drawing defenders to him, so if he doesn't time it right and gets hit as he's pitching the ball, it results in a fumble.

So I think that NFL teams would disagree with you that a lateral is a relative safe play. They primarily resort to it when they are desperate to make a play. Now, I do think it could be used more often than it is (and there are some other plays that I would say that about as well), but I think that most teams would tell you that the risk is not worth the reward to use it often.

Same here. My best guess is coaches are afraid of the turnovers that would probably occur. But it seems like they could be used more often.

We can learn a lot more from Rugby than just the Tushpush.
