I've seen at least one report that suggests that he would be a top 8 player if he had a clean resume. If we could get him at 27... I wouldn't scoff at the idea.

What's it going to be then, eh?

It could very well turn out that OT is the best value on the board when the Cowboys pick. I could easily see T.J. Clemmings or D.J. Humphries sitting there, or even a versatile guy like Cam Erving.

And I would trade out with a team looking to move into the round for one of them.

I would take Tampa's first and third for Clemmings and say thank you very much.

I am a BPA guy. But with needs that we have I'd be disappointed to see us take another OL, who will likely be a backup initially, in the first round even if the BPA is an OL.

I'd rather just trade the pick. That's more value to me than picking a guy who might end up just being a swing/back up type guy. You get guys like that in the 4th and 5th rounds............ not the first.

What is this “off-the-field stuff” that could torpedo Gregory’s NFL career? Why do scouts and the NFL.com reporters repeatedly go out of their way to emphasize that these problems are “no fault of his own?” Mike Florio’s baffled, and damned if this report—and others referring to Gregory’s “other issues”—isn’t specifically obfuscating the actual issue at hand.

The caution may stem from potential medical privacy issues, as well as workplace discrimination laws. There are rumors, confined to social media and message boards, that Gregory may suffer from depression and/or anxiety. (He himself has said he first started smoking marijuana to deal with anxiety, though it’s not clear if he was using the term in its clinical sense.)

It’s not clear whether the teams are reacting to the rumors, or whether they’re acting on information that’s behind the rumors, but it would absolutely explain this weird pre-draft farrago. As much as the players have collectively bargained away medical privacy, no team or reporter would want to speak publicly about a kid’s mental health status—or admit that they’d deny him employment because of it. At the same time, it would be a very real concern for teams gambling a first-round pick. Just ask the Houston Rockets, who took Royce White 16th overall, knowing his struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorder, and never got a single game from him.

If there’s truth to this, it’s telling that the NFL doesn’t have the vocabulary to differentiate mental health from “mental toughness.” It’s a cold business, and anything that gets in the way of an athlete’s ability to stay on the field will necessarily take precedence.

Gregory has elite pass rushing traits but last year was horrible against the run.

In previous years, his run stopping was adequate but never great.

Couple that with the pot issue, makes drafting him a huge roll of the dice.

However, if you hit on the pick at 27 and the kid keeps his nose clean, you grabbed an elite pass rusher that could be moved around in year one.

I do think he can add size to that frame, so it is a risk with this type of player but a true value at 27.

The 6-foot-4½ Gregory, who starred the past two seasons at Nebraska as a defensive end, weighed 238 pounds Thursday -- up 3 pounds from the NFL scouting combine last month.

I know there was some "talk" about Gregory being under 230 recently, but I don't think I'd put much stock in it. If he managed to get to 238 for his pro day, I wouldn't see any reason why he couldn't come to camp at 240. Then give him a year to bulk up some. I can see him at 250 easily.

And yes, I'd pull the trigger on him immediately if he fell to 27.

Gregory measured in at 6-foot-5, 235 pounds at the Scouting Combine (explaining he was sick before the weigh-in), so the five pounds lost might not be a big deal in and of itself.

“It really is not difficult,” he said then of adding some weight. “I can probably say it is a little harder to maintain it, but I have always been able to put on weight real quickly and lose it real quickly.”

Traveling as much as Gregory has been lately, it might be hard to find the appropriate nutrition and time to train.

I take him if he is there. Check out this video against a good Miami team; he dominates against run and pass. Top 10 talent. Jason Taylor II.

As far as his drug problem, I think the NFL marijuana rules will become more lenient to mirror societal changes. Until then, maybe he can stay off the bong for a year or two.

Also, he could save us $10+ million on next year's cap if he pans out and we don't have to re-sign Hardy. Something to think about.

Until then? Until then could be a few years. Why would you use your valuable 1st round pick on a undersized DE, who can't put the pipe down, knowing full well that smoking pot jeopardizes his pro career?

Reports are he was down to the 220's at his private workout.
I hope for the best for the kid. From everything I read he sounds like a good kid with some anxiety issues. Its a shame to watch his chance at a top 10 draft go away over some weed.
If we were a 3-4 team then it may be different. I just don't like his ability to add enough muscle and mass to be effective at this level. These OT are big, strong, and fundamentally sound.

Same with the MSU and OSU games in the Big Ten....did NOTHING at all. He's very overrated.

I don't know what you saw, but Gregory was shutting down anything to his side of the field in the MSU game. He ran down Langford a couple of times. Langford was the fastest back at the combine. He was doubled some. Got pressure. He is not over rated.

I'll ask this again.

For all that think we should grab him, where is he playing? OLB or DE? At 240 lbs, he certainly cannot be an every down DE. And frankly, the idea of using a first round pick on a guy that will only be a situational player and won't be getting a lot of snaps seems like a waste of a pick to me.

I'd take a chance at 27. He seems to have the "want to" to play the run. Plays with an edge, can add weight. Smart kid, good family supposedly. Has a problem with anxiety or depression if you believe reports, smokes mary jane to deal with it. Name of the game is get the qb.

Reading this makes me think he could develop into a three down player, if he can that would be important because right now he is viewed as a 2nd or 3rd down and long or a part-time player at DE in a 4/3 at 230.

There are plenty of things to worry you but he represents a potential match up problem for big OTs around the NFL.

Any DE or CB we take will be a situational player

I would say he would play on 3rd downs in 2015 and bulk up to 250 for 2016 and be our RDE
