I agree. Dallas would have probably done well with either player. Who knows which players Dallas would have ended up with in the 1977 draft if Payton was already on the team. They traded quite a few picks to move up to get Dorsett. There was no replacing what Randy White brought to the team, but Dallas would have been in good position to add some talent to help out.
Unfortunately the 75 draft was the last great draft we had until Jimmy. So there is no guarantee at all that we do as well with those picks later on.

The 1977 draft was a good draft (got Dorsett, Tony Hill, a good special teams LB in Guy Brown, Jim Cooper, who started at RT for 6 years, and Dave Stalls, who was a core special teamer and backup DL). Interestingly enough, the 1988 draft, the last under Tex Schramm, was a good one. They got Michael Irvin, Ken Norton, and Chad Hennings, and selected guys like Dave Widell, Scott Secules and Mark Higgs who all stuck around in the league for a good length of time.

In between? You could have drafted better using Mel Kiper's Blue Books than what Brandt did.

Sure there were no guarantees, but they would have had a lot of early picks. I believe it was three second round picks along with their own 1st round pick that they sent to Seattle in exchange for the #2 overall pick that they used to choose Dorsett. Randy White was the right pick, but Payton certainly would not have been a bad one, either.

Teams don't often have truly great drafts like the one the Cowboys had in 75. You need good drafts on a regular basis and the occasional great one. The 77 draft was a very good one for Dallas. That definitely changes if they pass on Dorsett(if they had Payton), but they would have had ammunition to get other players or make other trades.

I was doing some research earlier for a future writing project and found out that with the No. 2 pick in 1975, the Cowboys were torn between Randy White and Walter Payton. The selection of The Manster came down to the feeling that he would have more longevity and be productive longer than a running back since the shelf life for that position was even shorter back in those days.

It still worked out in our favor because Randy White also went on to have a Hall Of Fame career, and we ended up getting another Hall Of Fame running back 2 years later.......Tony Dorsett In fact, Randy and TD were in the same 1994 HOF class. It would have been interesting to follow the developments of that particular draft, especially since it was a historic one for the Cowboys.
From your post title, I thought Randy had a man crush on Sweetness that I didn't know about. I was glad to hear that he was over him, though. ;)

No comparison. Randy White could have broken Sweetness like a tinker toy and he brought that meanness to a great defense..

Dallas drafted Tony Dorsett with an even higher pick. Seemed to work out pretty well for them.
Process over results. The draft is a game of probability.

Someone wins the lottery eventually. Doesn't mean they made a sound financial decision buying their ticket.
