Lee is more of a luxury than a necessity at this point, unless they plan to move Hughes to the pen to save his arm. They better wrap Lee up long-term if they give up that blue-chip catcher.

From what I heard, the plan is to move Javier Vazquez and Lee takes his place in the rotation.

I'm hearing Lee to the Rangers now...

Edit: Smoak and 3 others for Lee and reliever Mark Lowe.

Oh well, Yanks are still in good shape. Better Texas than Minny or Tampa.

Cliff Lee was going to a contender no matter what. Turns out it was the Texas Rangers, not the New York Yankees.

More on the Rangers

Richard Durrett and the rest of the ESPNDallas.com team have the inside scoop on the Rangers, the American League and Major League Baseball. Blog

After talks between the Seattle Mariners and Yanks fell apart Friday afternoon, the Rangers jumped in and reached agreement on a trade for the left-hander, sources confirmed to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The New York Post reported that the M's sent Lee and reliever Mark Lowe to Texas for first baseman Justin Smoak and three minor-leaguers.

The Mariners will also send $2.5 million to the Rangers to subsidize the $4 million still owed to Lee. Texas has financial limitations due to bankruptcy hearings associated with the sale of the team. There has been speculation that the Rangers would not be able to add weapons for the stretch run.

Lee is 8-3 with a 2.34 ERA this season for the Mariners, his first in Seattle. The Phillies traded him this offseason after acquiring Roy Halladay.

Lee won the Cy Young while with Cleveland in 2008. Over nine seasons he is 98-55 with a 3.84 ERA.

My emotions have been all over the place these past two days. Great for the Rangers.

Good deal for everyone. Rangers got a true #1 ace Cy Young caliber player, their best pitcher since Nolan Ryan if not Fergie Jenkins, and the Mariners got quite a haul of prospects. Justin Smoak gets to develop without having the pressure of produce for a contender in a pennant race. Beaven gets a clear path to the majors without waiting for a slot to open with the glut of pitching prospects the Rangers have.

Chris Davis is the happiest guy about the trade.

Nice move by the Rangers. Gotta make bold moves.

It's nice to know the Yankees don't always get anyone they want. They already have an all-star team.

I'm just happy Boston or Tampa did not get him. Of course, he is a free agent this offseason so I guess anything could happen then.

Ranger fans will love what Cliff Lee brings. He was on my Phillies last year and we still are upset that he was traded away.
