Rangers prepared to move on without Wilson

looks like CJ signed a 5 year $75 million deal with the Angels. I'm not sure we shouldn;t have considered that.

Ugh. I would have done that. That's only $15M a year. :bang2:

My guess is he just wanted to go home to SoCal.

I curse him with Steve Blass Disease!

My braves are shopping Jair Jurrgens, he is a very good young pitcher. Much better then Wilson.

We want power hitters in return. Maybe Texas has some big bats in the minors that are pro-ready they can swap.

Are you sure Atlanta wants any part of trading with the Rangers again? :muttley:

After the Teixeira fiasco? probably not.

Jurrgens would be a huge addition to the Rangers. He's may be a step closer to being a true ace than CJ is, and since we already have Harrison and Holland in the rotation its not as if we have to have another lefty to replace CJ.

I agree. $5 million doesn't seem too out of line.

Of course the deal with Tex was that his contract was expiring and the Braves gambled that they could sign him to a new contract. The kind of trade we are talking about here would be different.

Hmm CJ said Texas' offer was barely half what the Angels offered. (what 4 year $40M?)

My guess? Texas is going to go full bore after this Yu Darvish kid.

They say he is 25, 6'5 and has seven effective pitches. (7?!?!)

Though they did say that the fee to talk to him and his contract would probably eclipse Matsuzaka's $104M total.

That's a shocker if Texas was that far out of the running.

Guys jsut remember this:

We lost Cliff Lee. Arguablly one of the top 5 pitchers in the game. Period. Everybody said we would be trash... people stepped up.

We lost CJ, who most people couldn't care for in the first place. People are going to step up again. I look forward to Holland taking CJ's role as the power lefty. And Lewis taking CJ's spot as the #1.

This division is going to once again come down to a few games. Pujols will be walked. Wilson will do the walking as we have seen time and time again. I'm really not anymore worried than I was last year at this time when Lee floated away for less money to Philly. When the chips were on the table it wasn't the big fish, but the smaller pieces that got us to the final dance.

Let LA get thier prized FA. Spend their payroll on names. We saw how that helped Boston didn't we last year? Crawford and Gonzalez and didn't even make the postseason losing against Crush Davis and the Orioles.. as long as we do our part we'll be all right.

I just want that last out in the World series an out that will haunt us for years until we get it.... But I don't want to overreact and sacrifice 2013 when FA will be a dime a dozen to do it.

The thing is we were in 1st place in the division even before we acquired Cliff Lee. Now we aren't just losing a guy that was a boost to the 1st place team we already were, we are losing a guy that was key in making us a 1st place team to begin with.

Of course it's true that others may step up, but just because it happened this year doesn't guarantee it will happen again. I think we can be competative with the group we have, but losing a quality starting pitcher is never a plus.

Also keep in mind where CJ went. With the Angels adding CJ and Pujols the division likely will be much tougher to win.

Yep. CJ leaving hurts the Rangers, but CJ going to the Angels is a double dagger. We are hurt and they got stronger in one move. ...not to mention they now have Poo-holes. ;)

As bad as C.J was during the postseason, he was one of the main reasons we won the division in the first place.

We had our two runs at the WS and failed. You can't expect an elite organization like the Angels to just sit back and take it on the chin, C.J Wilson gives them a even better Rotation as a 4th guy behind Santana, Weaver, Haren, etc and Pujols bolsters their lineup tremendously.

We still have the best lineup but that can only get you so far, Angels should be the heavy favorites now and for the next 2-3 years.

I would really feel more comfortable with Yu Darvish. I don't feel too good about the Neftali transition to the rotation. It will be tough for him to replace CJ's production.

I want Yu Darvish (25) and Matt Garza (28).

Our oldest starting pitcher will be 28. I like the sound of that. The Rangers will be able to hang on to Garza for at least two more years through arbitration too.

Of course it would take a trade for Garza rather than just signing him as a free agent.

Horrible day to be a Ranger's fan.

The Angles have not only eliminated the separation between the two clubs, but are clearly the division favorites at this point.

Umm, why is that? We still have more offense than they do and we aren't done in FA yet.

The Rangers losing and the Angels gaining 16 wins and an ERA of under 3.00 is a swing of several games in the standings.

And then you add Albert... The Angels are clearly a little ahead at this point.

The Rangers need to do something.

I agree with MW that this was a bad day for Rangers fans and that the Angels should now be considered the favorite. However Sam correctly pointed out that the Rangers are not done in FA yet - at least we don't think so. The time to judge will be after free agency is over, and even then we wont have the full story until we see how Feliz makes the transition to starter.

I will say this, even though Sam is correct in saying we still have more offense, the Angels have some exciting young players, and now that they have a big bat in the middle of the lineup to go with some incredible speed on the bases the gap is likely narrowing, and if some of their young guys can continue to develop who knows how strong their offense can be. Seems to me the Angels could be building a pretty strong group.

The Angels and the Rangers aren't gaining / losing 16 games. Someone will take Wilson's place and won't lose every game they pitch. Whoever Wilson is taking over for in the Angels rotation didn't lose every game they pitched either. (Besides, I curse CJ with Steve Blass Disease!) ;)

Also to note, the Rangers still have far more offensive firepower than the Angels.

The funny thing is, the Angels pretty much replaced one of their up and coming players with Pujols. Mark Trumbo was inserted at first base last year due to an injury to Kendrys Morales. He wasn't likely to lose that spot since he finished second in RoY voting. (Jeremy Hellickson won it, and rightfully so)

Wonder what they are going to do with him. He has got to be pissed. :laugh2:

You're right, the Rangers are losing 16 games because Wilson is gone... And consequently the Angels are not gaining 16 wins because of it.

The Angels were what 10 back of the Rangers in the loss column?

I don't think it would be unreasonable that Wilson's defection to the Angels has cut that 10 game difference in half... At least.

And then you have the "Albert" affect, which wipes out any remaining difference between the two teams.

Eh...they weren't serious about re-signing him anyway. Just keep developing the youngsters, it might take 3-4 years but they'll see some results eventually. Nothing really special about Matt Garza or any other remaining pitcher. Maybe Gio Gonzalez since he's a lefty and we need another one in the rotation. I'm not even sold on this Yu Darvesh. A LOT of money for a guy that hasn't even pitched in an MLB ballpark yet.

Good for CJ, he'll probably dominate as a #3 or #4 pitcher over there. No pressure for him
