Ranking the NFC East Defenses

Not that they didn't underperform last year, but I think the talent level of Dallas' secondary is better than that in San Diego.

The Cowboys have made a considerable investment of free agents, money and draft picks to field a dominant defense and I'm hoping that finally comes together this year!

I really agree with this, especially with the addition of Hamlin. I still think Watkins can emerge and be a weapon as well, and I really like Courtney Brown. I think he will open some eyes.

These post are gonna make Eduncan22 cry.

I'd feel guilty, but I just can't force myself to, and it would definitely be forced.

I am sure he will post a 3 sec clip showing Keith Davis or Bradie james getting beat ..... and come to the conclusion that Henry needs to be replaced.

I am anxious to see this defense. Bordering on giddy. I think guys we have who have been much maligned are suddenly going to shine like I've always believed they could. This defense has depth, power, speed, and a good balance of youth and experience.

Here's what I look for this year.

1. Ken Hamlin will be a mentor in the secondary and a vocal leader. He will allow Roy to play closer to the LOS where he can cause havoc. I loved the reports that he had the Seahawks secondary staying late for film sessions. That kind of focus can't be measured.

2. Pressure on the QB from every direction. Can anyone still be convinced there isn't a difference in the way this scheme will function as opposed to last year? Even the much maligned Mike Zimmer was less than pleased with the defense we ran. Remember when he was asked if it was his defense? He said, "it has my label on it." When other players are asking our players why we didn't make adjustments or turn loose, what does it tell you?

3. Phillips had bookend pressure in SD as well as up the middle from the front three. What he did not have was someone like Roy Williams on blitzes. I have wanted to see Roy turned loose for 4 years. Finally it's going to happen. Look for a lot of big plays this year. Get ready to say this a lot. "He got jacked up!"

4. Expect breakout or big years from these players. Spears, Canty, Hatcher, Carpenter, Burnett, and Williams. All of them are going to get to do what they want, go after the ball.

5. Expect Anthony Spencer to wow you. I said it before, I'll say it again. He and Ware are going to race to the QB and then "make a wish."

6. Expect Ware to be the defensive POTY. No more dropping 20 yards deep. Go after the ballcarrier.

7. Expect Greg Ellis to be a situational pass rusher from the LDE spot, not an OLB. Same from Hatcher but RDE. Expect Ratliff at NT in these situations. 5 to 6 guys will be coming after the QB, especially on 3rd and long. The offenses will not know which guy is coming for sure.

I think the 2.5 second rule will really be in effect for QBs this year with this defense. Therefore I expect better coverage from the DBs across the board.

Sacks
INTs
Forced fumbles & recoveries
Few points allowed

Those are my dream. We'll give up the occasional big play, but the overall tone of the defense will be hard hitting and havoc causing.

Couldn't agree more. I don't see this as wishful thinking. I expect it.

Not just from the defense, I expect big things from this team across the board.

I expect Romo to step up and be even better than last year.
Garrett will be huge here.

I expect our weakest link, OL, to make huge strides.
Adams and Columbo fully recovered and Gurode in his second year as starter. Davis at his best position OG. Nice competition for Kosier at LOG.

Call me a homer, but if offered a million to pick this years NFC Champion, there's no way I'm picking against Dallas.

You do realize that we ran a base defense with a primary focus on stopping the run.

S.D. under Philips did just the opposite.

You think that might have had just a little to do with those rankings.
How did they rank against the run.

San Dog 351 SYD
Boys 223 SYD

Total difference of 128 yards.

+8 yards a game in favor of San Dog.

You really don't know what you are taking about.

I know exactly what I am talking about .... I understand how a defense works ...

The Chargers was always getting after the QB .... We rarely did.

When you go after the QB .... you have 3 sec before you double the pressure on your own defensive backfield ...... Cowboys problem is that the opposing Qb always had 4-5 sec to find a receiver.

Now post one of your photobucket clips of Davis or James getting beat and tell me how its Henrys fault ....

San Diego is the winner.
The best pass defense in the NFL in 2006 based on yards allowed per game was 150.8 yards per game by the 2-14 Oakland Raiders.

Let me guess, you'd have been thrilled to have their pass defense.

Dallas had more ints than SD but we did not have the same pass rush. Our secondary is not as bad as some of you make it out to be. Bottom line is no secondary can cover all day long they must get help from the pass rush which they have not had.

Regardless of what you may think Dallas secondary can't be asked to cover as long as they have been asked to do and we must have a rush to force QB's to throw the ball before they are ready. I'll end it there because evidently you don't have a clue.

Sack stats rarely tell the whole story. QB pressures and knockdowns are much more telling. The 2003 team could have had many near sacks... and fewer pass plays where the QB had 8 seconds to throw.

You have to admit...Oakland played hard.
So did the Cowboys. The problem was (and this has been pointed out to you dozens of times) that our scheme was not one designed to pressure the QB thus making the DBs have to maintain coverage for an inordinatley long period of time. When that happens NFL QBs and WRs are going to beat you and pile up stats.

I'm not sure what part of that is over your head.
