Ranking the QB's

I seem to remember Troy Aikman out playing Brett Fabre in all those playoff games. John Elway way too low.
That was Aikman's peak years while it was Favre's infancy.
Favre is a pretty awful person apparently, but he has 70K passing yards and over 500 TDs.

Cunningham had some good teams. Those Philly teams had two of the best defensive players ever in Reggie White and Jerome Brown. I would rate McNabb ahead of Cunningham.
Especially since Cunningham broke his leg after starting for only about 4 1/2 seasons, and was never the same when he came back.

I prefer wins when it counts over stats during the season. Aikman played his best football in the playoffs and Suoer Bowls. Favre did not. And those years Aikman beat him was Favre’s peak years also

Adults at the time who watched those games realize Dallas shaped Favre. His losses to Dallas dynasty teams in the early 90s elevated him and he was at his best immediately following our Dynasty.
He was All Pro in 95, 96, 97 and considered the best QB in the game for that stretch.

Troy never made All-Pro nor did he throw for 3500+ yards. He was what we'd call a system QB today. But he may have been the best system QB ever.

Favre was a gunslinger and he may have in fact been the origin of the word as gunslinger was one of his nicknames.

Troy brought us titles and we should adore him but he was not ever considered the best QB of his era.

I look at who I rather have . Aikman or Favre and I take Aikman and it’s easy. Aikman didn’t put up the numbers cause of the system. He wasn’t a system QB. He could of threw the ball all over the field and did so when he needed to. His playoff games were insane good. He didn’t make mistakes and his accuracy was 2nd to no one.

favre was an overrated gun slinger that made as many mistakes as plays he made. Which cost him playoff games. He had great teams the years Dallas beat them and only won 1 super bowl even having those great teams.

Aikman at the time set a record for wins in a 10 year span or something . Favre had all the hype while Aikman had the rings.

I saw Staubach win his Heisman he did it because he could run, saw his entire Cowboys career, I know I know,,,,,different era but he wasn't close to Aikman as a passer, Have a hard time putting Staubach above Aikman.

Thinking about Cowboy QB's...

Eddie LeBaron was short, 5-7
Dandy Don Meredith was in movies, tv personality. Great dude!
Roger Staubach our Heisman winner, Captain American all that is good.
Troy Aikman great passer, another tv personality
Tony Romo holds all the Cowboys records and a great tv personality
Dak Prescott on his way to breaking all of Romo's records, also a TV personality.....kinda!

What other franchise comes close to that?

Cunningham 4 pro bowls, 56.6 comp%, 81.5 passer rating
McNabb 6 pro bowls, 59 comp% 85.6 passer rating

Easily McNabb
I know we'll maybe never agree on how Passer ratings are hard to compare 10 years apart (let alone 20-30 years), but I bet Cunningham's numbers translate to about a 91 QB rating in McNabb's era...on average

Having said that, I wouldn't really argue against McNabb. Kind of tomato-tomahto thing.

Cowboys have been blessed

This is just a terrible argument.
Wanting Aikman is fine for nostalgia's sake and less jerk factor but the rest....

Dallas had the BEST 2 YEAR TEAM OF ALL-TIME in 1992 and 1993. Both squads rank as top 10 overall teams EVER.
So you can't use team strength against Favre or anyone in comparison to Aikman.
Dallas was awful early with Aikman, built to great and then fell off.
There is zero chance Aikman owns any decade long stat lines. He started 0-11 and finished 4-7.
Jimmy built those teams for a good time, not a long time.

Favre made the playoffs 11 times. He carried a lot of average teams to the SB. He was 40 years old in Minny and tossed 32 TDs and only 7 picks.

Troy did play VEERY well in the playoffs going 11-4. But he only had 1 game winning drive or 4th quarter comeback for his entire playoff career.
The team was just that good around him. And the concussions and back issues robbed him of a long career.

Favre has the 4th highest career approximate value. This is a number HoF use to help separate out candidates.

What do we do with Slingin' Sammy and Johnny LuJack, Bobby Layne, Frankie Albert? What do we do with Otto and Johnny U, Frantic Fran, Bart Starr?

You read anything about the great QB's talking SI/ESPN/Sporting News etc you will se Otto Graham and Johnny Unitas mentioned. Some mention Staubach. Most mention John Elway and Fran Tarkenton. Oh yeah....Dan Marino and hell....Joe Montana, Some...Jim Kelly. Dan Fouts?

So how is this done?

The best pre 1980 QB I ever saw play was Johnny U, Otto came a little before my time (if possible, ha!) Unitas was great as was that whole offense. John Mackey, Lenny Moore, Ray Berry all HOFers. The worst important QB's were Bradshaw and Namath, both sucked and their numbers prove that out.

I can dig deep into this having all I need to get down into it and come up with a top 50 list but it will always be......different era back then. So just how do we compare Otto Graham to Big Ben, Staubach to Dak

As of right now just going to go with the best QB for each team

Cowboys....Troy Aikman
Eagles....Donovan McNabb
DC Dragons...Sonny Jurgenson
Giants...Eli Manning
Packers...Aaron Rodgers
Lions....Matthew Stafford
Bears....Sid Luckman
Vikes...Frantic Fran
Niners...Joe Montana
Rams...Kurt Warner
Cards...Jim Hart
Seahawks...Russell Wilson
Falcons...Matt Ryan
Saints...Drew Brees...who is tailor made for TV
Buc;s.....Vinny Testerverde
Panthers....Cam Newton
Chiefs....Patrick Mahomes
Broncos...John Elway
Raiders...The Snake
Chargers...Philip Rivers (sorry Dan)
Bengals....Ken Anderson
Browns...Otto
Steelers...Big Ben
Ravens...Lamar Jackson
Jets....Joe Namath
Dolphins...Dan Marino
Bills....Jim Kelly
Pats....THE GOAT
Colts....Peyton Manning
Oilers/Titans...Warren Moon
Texans...Desuen Watson
Jags....Mark Brunell

Now how do we rank the top 50 all time, we use....what?
I’m confused . Is this a top 50 or just the best QB from each franchise ?

FAvres best Receivers were Antonion Freeman and Donald Driver- He had Sterling Sharpe for a couple of years before he got hurt. Adn who was Favres running backs? Later on he had Ahman Green but before that Dorsey Levens was the best. Nobody will ever confuse Levens and Freeman/Driver with Emmett and Irvin. Packers teams were great because of Favre and the defense with Reggie White and Leroy Butler. (and butler deserves the HOF)

My grandson and I met Butler at Lambeau last month and the guy was incredbilty gracious and kind. As good a ballplayer as he was, he is a much better person.

I often compare Aikman to Bart Starr -- both of them were QBs for dominant teams -- both of them were capable of throwing it around with the best of them but rarely had to.

Aikman won 3 championships, Starr won 5 of them. Both teams they led were jam-packed with HOFers. Neither of them really get the credit they deserve when compared to other contemporaries.
