Overall state football rankings

ESPN.com

High school playoffs have ended, bowl season is in full swing, and the NFL playoff picture grows clearer by the game.

In the midst of this football bonanza, we got to wondering: How do the states stack up across all levels of football?

We asked our NFL, college and Scouts Inc. editors to rank the states and District of Columbia at each level, then combined those rankings for an overall number.

The rankings you see below connect to a further description of each state. They aren't, however, the final word.

We're interested in your description of football in your state. Did we get it right? Did we miss an important fact, player, coach or game that would alter the rankings? Let us know what you think, and we'll add the best submissions to that state's pages.

The state names are actually links where you can see further details of each state and why they rank where they do. Oh yeah, and ESPN is once again wrong about the Cowboys.

Question for folks from New York.

Do they just not play football alot of there? Population seems to have alot to do with this list, and I would think NY would be more representative.

As they say on the radio, I will just hang up and listen :D .

I really don't know WHY football isn't as big in NY. But when I was working for a TV station, we got a reporter who moved from Brooklyn to Texas. She was astounded at the attention given to high school football. She said in NY, you were lucky if there were stands at a high school football game. It was pretty interesting to hear.

I'm guessing it's because they don't call them the Landover or Ashburn Commanders.

After watching Southlake Carroll play Austin Westlake I can tell you this is the premier football state. Incredible talent. Southlake had two former Cowboys kids on the squad(they always seem to have a couple). Tre Newton(6 foot 190 pound RB) is unbelievably good. Prolly be the highest rated kid in the state next year. If he isn't then Riley Dodge, the Carroll QB might be. Dodge's dad was the coach(he just took the college job at UNT) and is a former UT QB.

Westlake had amazing talent as well. The QB is heading off to Arizona State and is a serious prospect at 6'5" 230 pounds with very strong arm and solid speed.

Texas has always had great high school football talent but the coaching and conditioning now are at all-time highs. Most premier Texas High School football coaches now make 6 figures.

Cedar Hill has a QB named William Cole that is the quickest kid in the state. They won their classification and he averaged over 200 yards rushing per game. He'll be a pro WR one day. Very Santana Mossesque.

Taking population into account, Louisiana has to be #1 by far.

High school and college very possibly but the pro team has been horrid for most of its existence and was in seriously jeopardy of leaving the state.

Louisiana high school football is dominated by the private league that has kids stay in school an extra year similar to what BYU does. They graduate at 19 and are often stellar in football.

New York is a Baseball town. On the local talk sports radio they talk nothing but yankees and mets 85% of the time, that is why I got Sirius. NFL and the Cowboys! No baseball for me.

Mitch I've been saying for years North Carolina is very underrated state for football because basketball has been good for 50 + years it's hard to overcome this. Butch Davis is at UNC he'll start getting these kids Georgia, Florida and Tennessee has been getting

I wasn't even talking about the Saints.

Louisiana is 22nd in population, but in the top 7 in this list in both college and high school.
