True hip-hop ended about ten years ago when P. Diddy or whatever you'd like to call him decided that remixes should be born. It has since degenerated to even lower forms with mindless beats, mindless lyrics, just total garbage.

In all reality, the music has suffered since the deaths of B.I.G. and Tupac; everything now is more commercial and less powerful since everyone is now just interested in money and fame. The heart behind it has stopped beating.

That's a gross misgeneralization. For one thing P Diddy didn't invent mixing or sampling, that's been around even longer than the Beastie Boys (who were the first to get really popular doing it). For another thing Tupac was really commercial as well and there's been plenty of good music since him. You just have to look for it. As long as there is African American culture there will be hip hop and as long as there's hip hop there will be rap.

I tried to partcipate in one of these rap threads a while ago, but all I got for my effort was ridicule for the rap stars I picked out as my favorites. I'm so uncool with the kids these days.

Here we go with another Tupac lovefest thread...

never could put my finger on it other than he must have been big in the midwest or something.

If anyone wants to hear true lyrical talent then just ask. I'd be happy to upload some examples.

theres sum good songs here n there. wut really amazes me is the quantity of bad words in rap. If other genres' (sp?) have big hits with no bad words why not rap? yeah theres rap songs withOUT bad words, but almost half the cd or more contains strong language. is this just me or is it a lil dissapointing? i mean imagine u stoppin on a red light, theres a car with sum rap on..and u hear '' #%!R#@!!! N#$%!@!!! FUC%$#%!!'' hahahaha...:)

I love rap! I'm just sayin that why the use of bad wording so much?

Before you say that...
ask yourself how many of your favorite movies are filled with foul language. Probably the best.
And how many stand up comedians' acts are littered with obsceneties? Probably the majority of the best.

I agree that alot of it is just cussing garbage. But the best emcees cuss (curse) minimally, if at all. But it's an aggressive artform that is driven home with the emphasis on language, delivery and context.

Dana Dane? D.E.F.?
cinderella???????

C'mon... let's get past 85 please if we're really gonna discuss rap/hip hop.

What you say about Kanye and MTV is pretty much correct however. But legendary?
Nah, he's not legendary.

DJ Premier (aka Primo) is more legendary in terms of beats. You may know him from Gang Starr.
Kanye is a sampling fiend which is fine in hip hop... but not if you just take an old song and speed the tempo up and call it a beat.
