I thought the high frame rate was terrible! Absolutely cheapened the experience. Complete soap opera effect the entire movie, and at times things seemed to be jerky or in fast forward. Totally takes you out of the movie, and I honestly can't even say how I felt about the movie itself because of how distrsctingly bad the film looked in this format. It should only be used for CG or they need to adjust how they shoot films to account for it.

Wow. I guess different strokes. But I agree with James Cameron and Peter Jackson's views that the HFR is tremendous and the higher frame rate gives a much better immersion effect. I did not find it distracting at all. I have no idea what you mean by "soap opera effect".

I think he means is that the filming of a soap opera is very "real" life like. Some of the newer TVs have this and it gives me the feeling that I'm sitting in an audience watching live...like a sitcom or "soap opera".

Some people are caught off guard by it and aren't interested in films being that life-like. Hate to be redundant but that's how I would explain it.

I liked it a lot. Didn't watch in new format (can't wait 3D due to motion sickness). I liked the riddle scene between Bilbo and Gollum. And, I like meeting Radagast (the Brown wizard). I would say 9/10.

I will say, after watching The Hobbit, we went back to watch the LOTR, and picked up a lot more of the references.

This'll fix what ails you... and I've never experienced drowsiness with this... unlike with Dramamine...

The Hobbit - 9.5/10

I went in with very low expectations. I think it's difficult to go back into a movie world like this and re-create what was done before, be different at the same time and still execute a good movie. But they sure as hell did it. Of the 4 Peter Jackson-directed Tolkien movies out so far, I would rank this #2, behind Fellowship of the Ring.

It's unfortunate that Peter Jackson decided to push this 48 fps non-sense. I did not see it in 48 fps, largely because I cannot stand 3D. But despite being one of the best movies all year, the controversy around 48 fps is what dominates the dialogue about this movie. Whatever you do, don't go see it in 48 fps. You may like it or hate it, but that sort of gimmickry should not overshadow what is otherwise a great movie.

I will say the 3D aspect was much smoother and less taxing on the eyes in HFR than in standard 24 fps, but I could not get past how things looked otherwise. Not just the soap opera effect, but things seeming jerky and at times in fast forward.

I've tried it. Didn't help me catch a damn thing.

Did you chum it with a little tobacco spit?

If not, then there ya go... and a plus is that the fish don't get motion sickness during the fight...

I saw it in 3d but 24pfs. The film looked normal but 24fps 3d seems to have more motion blur. I think this is why they went 48fps to smooth out the motion blur. I usually don't notice it in non-3d movies. I think the 3d part highlights it.

I don't like the whole idea of 48fps. Movies seem outside of reality because of the 24fps. You're not seeing true motion so it's "magical". Going to 48fps is going the direction of home video cameras. Things appear in normal motion to what you're used to on a day to day basis...the "soap opera effect". That's why tv shows and soap operas don't look like movies....the fps (and lighting).

Aside from 48fps...did anyone notice that the movie was shot digitally? They were shot on RED cameras and not film. Seems the time has come where digital has officially taken over.

Thanks. I didn't care much for Basterds the first time I saw it, but it grew on me after watching it a couple more times. I have loved Pulp Fiction since I saw it at the theater when it first came out. Personally I don't think it's overrated.

Anyway, I'm impressed you think that much of Django...have I mentioned I'm looking forward to seeing it? :)

My list mirrors yours. I understand why people would think highly of Kill Bill, it's just not my thing.

Maybe we can all agree that Death Proof brings up the rear on everyone's list.

No doubt lol. If you count Sin City as a Tarrantino flick then that's on my list too. I love that movie
