Do the Cowboys get any credit against the salary cap based on Ratliff playing for Chicago? IIRC we may get credit for the base salary for the time he plays for another team. Anyone have the specifics on this?

Maybe, but whenever I listen to Bill Polian on NFL radio talk about the cap, he says it's very unforgiving, and as far as I can tell, has never brought up an instance where a team got money back against the cap. Doesn't mean it won't happen, just never heard of it happening.

It's something you hope for but cannot expect.

I loathe the player Ratliff and what he did to our Boys.

I hope he gets taught a physical lesson on Monday. If I was Garrett- I would make it a "Locker-room solidarity" thing.

You betray the team- you will be not be given any quarter.

That is something Jerry would have to take up with the NFL and Players Association. It will be a legal battle that Dallas will most likely not win. They would have to prove fraudulence and even then, not sure if they get cap relief.

No. I am not talking about getting money back from him. I am talking about getting credit for the base salary that we have top pay after cutting him as a vested veteran. If he is on the opening day roster, his base salary becomes guaranteed for the year. I think by the Bears picking him up and paying him, we get credit against the cap for his base salary... I think.

I like the way you put that, rat is a scum bucket.

Looks like Jeremiah the Rat's agent will be getting calls from a number of players around the league.

We are all talking about cap relief, not the money Ratliff will make. I am sure Jerry doesn't care about that part, the cap hit is the problem.

Did we save any money by cutting him? I keep thinking the logical course of action was to IR him to keep another team from using him this year.

I agree.

The NFL is not about to give them cap relief over Rat.

But a lawsuit against the player is surely coming but not until the off season.

Dallas will win it and if the judge/arbitrator thinks there is any attempt to defraud Dallas with his actions..

..the judge could recommend it to a higher court for damages to be filed for,

..which would make for good drama watching it play out.

Hope Frederick upends him like Colombo did to Hall.

we better hope that Rat is not healthy

we may not like the guy because of what he did but a motiovated and healthy Rat will be more than a handful for Fred

I'm not confident that we will see the prime, fast DT that was Jay Ratliff. He's been off the field for a long time now. I find it hard to believe he will have his legs under him.

It depends if there is offset language in the contract. Even if there is offset language, it wouldn't be much since Rat most likely signed a vet min contract. So, if the Cowboys got some money back it would be around $500K for this year.

The other part that deals with the signing bonus and base salaries is another issue which will be decided by the NFL and a court of law. Probably around $10-14M.

various.

my guess is jerry will push for relief on next year's cap and he may well get it.
there is none coming this season.

IF Ratliff has to give Dallas money back we'd get relief for whatever money we recovered.

As to the player, Ratliff made all of 1 assisted tackle last week.
I expect him to give it his all but doubt he is anywhere near 100% in shape or 100% ready for football.

If he kills us it is likely to be next season.

If he had been playing this season and was cut, then any salary paid by the new team would be deducted from the Cowboys cap. They would also save that amount in real money.

However, in the Rat situation, he was on the PUP list which prevented his base salary from being guaranteed for the season. The Cowboys were able to quit paying his base salary when he was cut; therefore, there was no benefit to the Cowboys when he signed with the Bears.

I haven't followed this all that closely. Everyone was keeping quiet at the time of his release, has anything new come out of this yet?

Last I remember, it seemed like Ratliff's camp basically lied about his condition which led to the Cowboys releasing him. And now he's suddenly okay to go?

Or do I have that wrong?
