vision and being able to get back up to top speed quickly after making a cut using that vision are keys, ask emmitt and barry.
i agree. but acceleration is something you can improve on with drills and training (which he is actually working on as we speak)

and like you said, that vision is needed to make that cut

I highly doubt Ray Rice runs a sub 4.4. If he does, that means some of these other guys are low 4.3s or high 4.2s. I would guess that Rice is mid to high 4.4s...like a 4.45.

He doesn't have the pure breakaway speed.

4.45 is pretty good for a rb if he has good vision, quickness and balance.

Rice- probably my most coveted draft choice. We should stay put and scoope him up at high value at #28.

Mine too. I know some folks'd be disappointed if we used a 1 on him, but he's definitely worth it--and it'd be stupid to think he'd fall deep in the second round

I watch tons of college football due to my job at a sports radio station and have seen all these backs play at least three times each this season.

While there are many quality backs in this draft there are four in my opionion that I would say are first round talent.

My top four would be

Mcfadden
Mendenhall
Stewart
F. Jones

Actually it's not stupid. Right now Ray Rice is looking at most likely being, at best, the 6th RB taken behind McFadden, Mendenhall, Jones, Stewart and most likely Johnson and/or Charles. Here are the draft positions for the 5th, 6th and 7th RBs taken for the past 5 years.

2007
5. 2 - 20th
6. 2 - 31st
7. 3 - 7th

2006
5. 2 - 13th
6. 2 - 28th
7. 3 - 10th

2005
5. 2 - 22nd
6. 3 - 1st
7. 3 - 9th

2004
5. 2 - 11th
6. 2 - 23rd
7. 4 - 23rd

2003
5. 3 - 29th
6. 3 - 32nd
7. 4 - 2nd

The odds are pretty good that he'll be there at our pick in the second round. Now if you think he'll be the 5th RB taken then trade out of the first, or if you think he'll be the 6th RB and you want to ensure you can get him then trade up with your second for an earlier pick. But Ray Rice is absolutely not good value in Rd 1, the draft is too deep at RB to make a reach like that.

That is very interesting. Good research.

Good post masomenos85. We all have to remember that whatever RB they pick he will be Barber's relief and not carrying a starter's role.

why just settle on that? why not draft a back who could possibly be a better back then barber? the way you look at is very short sided.

Rice looks very good to me and he has plenty enough speed. I would not mind taking him in the first either.

I watched Mendehall's highlights and they are not near as impressive as Rice.

If Rice were to fall to our second round pick I would be absolutely shocked. I don't care about 4.3 speed for a RB, he can't use it if he does not see the hole.

Taken 6th at best? I could see him being the 3rd or 4th RB taken easily.

Mainly because you have to look at the cost. Barber is an all pro and will get a nice contract. How much will this back that is better than Barber going to cost? And which back do you suggest they pick and where in the draft? And by the way it is "short sighted" not "short sided".

I wouldn't tell him that if I were you, you'd be setting him up for disappointment. I really like Ray Rice, but I'll be absolutely shocked if he is picked in front of McFadden, Stewart or Mendenhall, which would put him as the 3rd or 4th RB taken. Then I really see some team reaching and taking guys like Felix Jones or Charles Johnson based solely on their 40 time (and I guess for Charles Johnson, his versatility as well).

Talent wise I think Rice probably is 3rd or 4th, he's a terrific RB, but I don't think there's anyway that he knocks off one of the "Big 3" and his 40 is probably going to be substantially slower than Jones and Johnson, players who will get drafted higher than they should based on "upside".

::shrugs::

That's just how I see things shaking down.

I'd say you did very well, Wezsh0t... Pretty much nailed most of them IMO.

I do think McFadden, while he'll never be an NFL power back, can put his head down and get some tough yards when necessary. But those kinds of ordinary, non-spectacular runs aren't going to be on the highlight reels.
