Ray Sherman not returning

benandskin Ben Rogers
Spoke w/ someone who knows Sherm, wasn't sure he wanted to be here anyway. They hadn't spoken to him yet, were speculating. But interesting

Does he have a link to Garrett? Tennessee Vols right?

WR/AHC coach in Miami when Garrett was there, been around the league for a while. Chris Cartter, Randy Moss, Chris Chambers, Irving Fryar, Antonio Freeman, Bill Schroeder and Mark Ingram all had their best years under him. Has ties to Dan Henning way back in the Houston Oilers days.

I dont know, just trying to connect some dots.

So now one isn't enough? I'm all for interviewing minority candidates, and I don't like the idea of some of these "sham" interviews, but come on.

I'm not even going to get back into this. I agree with you but I'll just say something I regret.

Color me shocked that you'd have a problem with it....not.

Our new HC, who you clearly dislike, apparently asserts himself to name his own staff and you have a complaint.

Had Cowher, Gruden, Fisher or any other coach you wanted walked in here, told Jerry he was naming his own staff and promptly let Sherman go, you woulda been at the front of the line talking about a new sheriff in town.

I'm not sold on Garrett but I wouldn't have liked the move regardless of who did it.

We just let one of the best receivers coaches walk.

Oh well. Do your thing Jason. Just bring back post season success.

Perhaps Sherman was an enabler for the WRs, perhaps he fed their complaining, perhaps he didn't see eye-to-eye with Garrett, perhaps he passed gas in Garrett's face...whatever the reason our coach doesn't want him around.

I'm clearly a Garrett fan, but it is what it is.

As pretty much everyone has wanted, we now have a HC naming his own staff, so regardless of what I feel about Sherman, our coach is getting the guys he wants and I couldn't be happier.

Time will tell if it's a good move, but I like the feeling that there is, in fact, a new sheriff in town.

I have no complaint about him naming his own staff. That's how it sound be -- I've said that forever.

But I think most people believed, with some basis, that Sherman was maybe the best assistant coach on the entire team. I'm surprised that he of all people is being let go.

If it's all about hating Garrett, why are some of his biggest fans also expressing their disappointment in this thread?

And color me shocked that you'd get right in line.

As you said, he let one of the best WR coaches walk...not the only one. How about we wait to see how it plays out before declaring it a failure.

This may or may not have been directed at my comments but I just want to clarify what I said.
Wasn't directing it just at you... I thought a couple of other people mentioned it as well.

BTW, does anyone remember for sure that Garrett brought Sherman here? I know he got his guys for a lot of the staff, but for some reason I was thinking Sherman was more a Wade guy. I can't find the connection, but I thought I remembered that when Wade got the job. He was talking about that being one of the benefits of being in the league 30 years, that you know a lot of assistants, and I thought it was when they announced Sherman. Maybe not though.

I just wonder if that could be part of the "loyalty" question MacMahon brought up.

Well, I will admit this caught me flat footed. I like Ray Sherman, but you have to appreciate the fact that it really is going to Garrett's staff.

That begs the question who?

Well I still think Paul Chryst is coming and possibly his brother Geep from the Panthers. Paul has coached QBs and TEs, maybe John Garrett will move to WRs. Geep also coaches TEs. Perhaps even Paul's hand picked WR coach at Wisconsin, DelVaughn Alexander, who learned under Mike Riley at Oregon State.

There's also Jerry Sullivan who was on the 9ers staff and coaches with Garrett for the Dolphins for a year.

My guess, John Garrett to WRs. But it is only a guess.

Great. So the staff will be Garret and family with one Phillips thrown in for good measure.

Statement from Ray Sherman: "My contract with the Dallas Cowboys is expiring at the end of the season. I appreciate the opportunity that the Cowboys have given me. I was able to coach a great group of receivers who now have a tremendous foundation, giving them the ability to continue to excel for years to come in the NFL."

The media sure is chewing this up. Ironic part is that Jerry said Jason could choose his own staff and this looks like Jasons call. Now if Jerry fored Sherman on Garrett the media would be all over it for another reason.

Damned if you do damned if you dont

I never called it a failure.

It's just a move that makes no sense as an outsider.

We'll see. Do your thing Jason. You'll be the one held accountable.

To me it seems odd that you supposedly think enough of a man to consider him for the HC position. But then a few days later he's not good enough to retain as WR coach???

Obviously Jerry picks the HC and Garrett as the new HC picks the position coaches. But I find it hard to believe that Jerry did NOT know Jason's intentions as far as who would be retained or not BEFORE Garrett was formally named as HC.

Sorry to say, it does look bad. But we don't know the whole story yet. So let's see what happens...

I think I'm going to just go ahead and give up trying to predict Jason's staff and trust that he knows what he's doing.

I also think people should stop being premature over this one. Perhaps with his WR coach contract running out, Jason plans to allow him to interview for other teams for a chance to move up, in addition to interviewing for the Cowboys.

Remember, Jason did say that everyone will be evaluated.

Lets not get too carried away. I liked him as coach, but he isn't not the greatest WR coach ever either.

yeah I know, I'm talking about his knowledge of Garrett's playbook.

How do we know what went down? Maybe they did offer him an extension but he thought he may have better opportunities waiting. Maybe he did not want to be stuck as a WR's coach for the next 2, 3 or 4 years. Maybe they simply could not come to an agreement in general. I think we are jumping the gun just assuming Sherman was shown the door with out an attempt to retain him.

Not a bad idea but the fact that Campo is still there.

That's just it.

I really don't have a "Jason thing" other than I wanted a young, smart coach who could, hopefully, become our version of Fisher, Cowher, Reid, Landry, Belichick, etc. Guess you would prefer him to fail so you could get come sick pleasure out of the Cowboys failing again just to prove your point.

(Truth is, I don't want to get into another Garrett thing because everyone knows where we both stand).

Anyway, the HC has started to mold his staff, and I prefer to sit back to see how it works out.

and there's a good chance- we never will either. if you make a guy hc and give him full authority you must think the guy is not only pretty intelligent, but capable of making decisions.

And some people would prefer said young coach not jettison a widely respected WR coach, and one of the few assistants whose units didn't completely suck.

Can they do that without being accused of wanting JG to fail?
