Drafted by Cowboys RB Phil Mafah Clemson

Can he add anything to the pass game.

He has the size to block but he’s not very good at it.

Hes quicker than I thought.

We’ll see.. If he can run down and cover on special teams he might beat out Sanders.

On the surface this is going to be Blue & Williams backfield.
He said in an interview he thought people didn't realize how well he could catch it because he hurt his shoulder early in the year and played the whole year with it. I assume it limited him from raising his arm, either the injury itself or a brace he had to wear.

Right. Bo Scarbrough ran a 4.52 40-yard dash. Of course, he may be a bad example. He did end up averaging 4.3 per carry in a short NFL career derailed by injuries. But that's one of the problems with trying to be a power back in the NFL.
Power backs must have quick feet. Mafah doesn't.

Speed is an important measurement, but there are other factors to be considered.
Absolutely, vision and instincts are just as important. For a back like Mafah, balance, strength and durability...

I wouldn't like the pick unless the middle of our oline was good at run blocking. But I suspect it will be so I'm good with this pick. Makes sense. I wanted Neal, but Kellen Moore sniped him.

40 is 4.55, about the same as Emmitt. His speed is a non-issue, imo.
According to Google, Mafah's 40 time has never been released to the public. The "experts" doing his ratings have estimated his clocking to be about 4.65, or so. In any case, I'm hoping he'll prove to be a starter who should make a good partner to Blue and the Dallas offense. It's been a long time coming, that's for sure. The Cowboys need a good RB who is capable of saving their rushing attack. Let's hope he's someone capable of delivering it. The team claims they're still looking for a savior. Good luck.

There are more than a few who contend he's slow but I think he's average, which isn't that bad. He takes time to build his speed, which limits his forty time to some extent. I'll be hoping he works up enough speed to display some lengthy gains, though. Breaking tackles helps his cause.

If he manages to average over 4 ypc, it should be enough to allow our running game to do enough to help this offense find success. I'd be well satisfied with that, in any case. That's about what I'm really expecting from this young player. Anything more would be gravy.

Anything close to 5 ypc or more would please me plenty. I believe that our OL may be good enough to enable that to happen. Let's just hope that's sufficient for all of us to be very happy. It would be enough to help Dak improve his game considerably.
Look I'm not saying the guys going to make the roster i'm not sitting here trying to sell you on this guy i'm telling you I just think he's better than you describing and he sounds like Rico. You know a solid consistent player that doesn't do anything special you realize Rico only had two touchdowns last year don't blame the team he had one catch for a touchdown that he took three tries to get he's lucky to even have that and then he had 1 rushing touchdown 1000 yards he did nothing special but somebody thought we should keep him and that it was a mistake that he was worth the 6 million contracted only three millions guaranteed to keep a guy like that on the team instead of bringing over what oh that's right a rookie that seems a whole lot like him...

I guess that's a point I'm making we have a player now on a rookie contract that will get a shot he'll have to beat out Williams who right now may be a similar player maybe a little better if he's healthy if this staff is smart they'll try to get Hunter involved a little more he's not just a full back he's really a hybrid the old staff just didn't use much of our players right at all you know it and I know it they were a status quo they only see a player that can do one thing and they hardly ever use them.

I saw Mike Mccarthy misused Tony Pollard tried to make him a full time starter instead of backing up Zeke instead of using him properly he used him up too many runs in the center of the line you know try to use him like a normal 3 down running back and that was a mistake didn't use turpin right at all ..

I mean Vaughn in my opinion is a lot better player than he's being talked about around here and it's only because our coaching staff did not use him properly and again Rico,

how long did it take for them to finally use him even last year after the Pittsburgh game just to give him the ball 20 times a game like they should have that's what he needs that's what backs like Mafah needs, you got to feed them the football, let them get the tough yards, and he could split carries with a guy like Blue,
who then has the juice and can break the big ones he can do the special things and no he's not just a scatback he is not just a 3rd down back but they can overuse him like they did Pollard, trying to do too much of The Dirty work...
In the end it's going to come down to the new scheme and the offensive line everything else will work itself out in camp and if any of these guys just can't cut it I'm not going to cry over it they'll just have to go out and trade for a guy like Chubb i'm pretty sure that Cleveland who just picked up a guy who probably is going to be the new chub I mean Judkins is very similar are they going to keep chubb around?
In the end they'll probably be some options right now i'd worry more about who's going to be the number two wide receiver than I am this running back by committee because I think they've done a lot more with the offensive line I think they know they want to run the ball more they'll commit to it earlier I mean imagine if they would have used Rico and mixed in vaughn and Turpin more in this offense right from game one I don't think we'd be sitting here having the anxiety we have on whether this run game is going to work I put most of it on the staff last year yes the front office did not address running back and they should have I believe they're doing it now..

Speak for yourself and I'll speak for myself, OK?! The last thing I need is for someone writing a book to counter my opinions! A few paragraphs would be more than enough. Give both of us a break here, ok? I'm not here to argue with you or anyone else. Let's just keep it on anything but such a personal basis. My opinion isn't going to change the world and neither is yours. Relax.
Jeez, Louise!

Mafah's comparison would be Troy Hambrick, Ron Dayne, guys like that.

The comparison I saw was Audric Estime. No, I had no idea who that was!! Low end rotational back. That's what I see in Mafah.
Same here. I want to cheer for the player, and would love if we had a starter here, but I don't see the requisite quickness for the position.

wow. that is slow. that's the 24 zeke slow...he is not going to survive in NFL with that type of speed and the slow feet is not good running between tackles. he is a PS candidate.

Like most of our 7th rounders, the odds of Mafah contributing on anything but STs this year on game day are pretty slim if he even makes the 53. But who knows. We won't get a feel for this kid until pads come on or really until the preseason games.

DITTO By the way it's really easy to keep from having me respond is don't respond to my post don't leave me an opening because I'm going to speak my mind you got it so why don't you relax this is an open forum if you're going to be inside a thread where we're debating things and there's many responses again in an open forum you're going to get these type of responses from some people and hey if you want to avoid it go to a private chat I think they have that here go open up a direct messaging in Facebook and have your own private stuff going on but in that in the meantime I'm going to speak my mind as well so you relax..

It's very weird for me seeing so many not appearing able to comprehend the role of quickness to a RB. Most make it or break it due simply to that one thing.

OK, now I see why others don't bother to tempt you to go on one of your endless responses. I won't make the mistake of responding to you, just like many others don't. Gotcha, thanks. I'll make it a point to avoid your rambling ways, just like they do. It's very easy to respond without writing a book. Try it sometime, you might like it -- I know they would.

Power backs must have quick feet. Mafah doesn't.
From his draft profile

  • Shows impressive footwork for a 234-pound back, demonstrating quick feet in tight spaces to navigate traffic behind the line
Not sure why you're so gung ho to die on this hill. He's a 7th round pick. No ones calling him the next Bo Jackson. Unlike two years ago when half this board thought we drafted the next Barry Sanders.

He looks like he has some tools. We'll see. I like this pick better than wasting the 12th overall pick on a second round guard.

By the way I don't need to try it I use Twitter X so I understand limited characters and I can do it but here I don't have to i'm free no tethers but it seems like it triggers some so I do it more.:lmao::hammer::popcorn::bow::oldcouple::welcome:.

Nope, you're not grounded or anything like that. I'm certain you'll persist in doing what you do best.

As best I can recall, this is still a free country, so be free being yourself and hopeless of being brief.

It seems you desperately need the added attention that you get by rambling to your heart's content.

:muttley::thumbup::huh:  Keep being yourself. It's your special purpose after all's said and done.
