Read blaming Folk for kickoff returns

I just rewatched the opening kickoff several times, and quite simply the Texans blocked everyone who was down there between the 15 and 25 and ran through the gaping hole right up the middle.

I don't think coaching can fix this.

The kicker, punter, and guys who return kickoffs and punts are excellent. Everything else scares me.
I gotta agree with that.

When a guy catches the ball 5 yards deep, he should take a knee most of the time. The kickoff was really good, and I was surprised he brought it out. Then, you see the guy sprinting straight up the middle with not a single Dallas player in the area code. I guess he knew he could run it back on them, because he broke the general rule about bringing deep kickoffs back.

That is the coverage.

Well Like I said I am not making any excuses for read's poor unit but I certainly dont want coach joe back.

I totally agree with you. Bring Joe Back. We can't afford losing a game because special teams can't cover a kickoff or punt. Guys can say what these guys haven't been doing a good job th e whole preseason. We need
JOE. Everybody say it together JOE! JOE! JOE!

There's a greater probability of Jerry Jones bringing back Jimmy Johnson as head coach than him bringing Joe Avezzano back as special teams coach. Repeat after me. It ain't happening. It ain't happening. It ain't happening.

It scares everyone. You are acting like people are ok with our coverage. No one is.

Poor special teams can wipe out our offensive accomplishments quick.

Score 7 and then let the other team return it to the 40 and you are going to be tied an awful lot.

Listening to jerry with kristie scales last night talking about how the injuries will have a serious effect on the roster and the special teams made me nervous. He did say they wouldnt overcompensate at the wr position, but that was before stanbachs injury.

THe roster should be interesting and will tell us alot about the forthcoming special teams units.

no sir, he didnt.

Coach joe is right where he belongs and wants to be, espn1033 talking about the good ol days with tony casillas on the postgame show. They have a wonderful knack for taking every situation and comparing it to the 90s and then shooting down this team like it is no good.

I never referenced anyone else. Second, some people here are okay with the coverage, writing it off as pre-season experimentation or the incompetence of backups who will not make the team.

Who were our kickers in 2006 when we were 2nd in the NFL in kickoff coverage? Oh yeah, 5'2" Martin "Cannon Leg" Grammatica and Mike "Thunderfoot" Vanderjagt. No wonder we were so good. You know, I might buy the "it's the kicker" excuse more, if our punt coverage teams weren't awful last year with the best punter in the NFL.

And does Wade honestly believe he's the only team in the NFL using rookies and unseasoned players in coverage units in preseason? I'm pretty sure every team in the NFL is using them, but I'm not sure every team is giving up at least one (sometimes multiple) 50 yard returns every single game.

Aside from Read's coaching, I think what we have here is a problem with organizational philosophy. There is absolutely no reason why this team should be this bad at covering kicks with their athletes. We've had great special team units under head coaches who put an emphasis on special teams. When you treat special teams like the throwaway units, you get throwaway performances and throwaway results. I don't think any of our 2nd stringers and role players are truly scared of the possibility of losing their jobs to someone behind them on the defensive or offensive depth chart because they were outperformed on special teams, like they were under Jimmy and Parcells.

Exacto actoly

Actually, when a returner can get to the 20 yard line before our coverage team is even NEAR him, a HUGE part of that is on the kicker.

Kickoff coverage is NOT about how DEEP you kick it, is about the hang time you get on the ball, so that the return team can get down in coverage.

What Vanderjagt and Grammatica both DID do well, is that BOTH of them excelled at getting good hang times. A kickoff to the 10 yard line with a good hang time ALWAYS leads to a better result for the return unit than a line drive kickoff that is 5 yards deep into the end zone.

Well I think we all would like to see Folk get more touch backs however to try and put the blame on the kicker is really lame. ST just looked horrendous last nite.

I don't care if it's Folks fault, Read's fault or Wade's fault.

Get it fixed!!!

The special teams coverage units sucked last season and we are already seeing signs that it may be even worse this season.

What are they waiting until it actually costs the team a win before they go into 'major changes need to be made' mode?

When the owner of the team and it's entire fan base can see it and speak publicly about it then I would say the issue is just about at DEFCON 1 level.

The hierarchy goes from Wade on down. So it's time for Wade to light a fire under Read's *** which will hopefully light a fire under the player's ***** and we see a consistent performance from these units.

I think it's kind of pathetic that this situation wasn't a very high priority heading into training camp knowing how bad the results were last season.

Sounds like some people forgot that Special Teams are 1/3 of the game.
