Rebuilding the defense might take a couple years

Going into the 2014 season, I think it is important for people to recognize that this defense probably won't be all set going into the year. We're not going to fill the void from the 32nd ranked defense in the league (ypg) by somehow signing a bunch of free agents.

The team was pretty reluctant to restructure many contracts outside of getting under the salary cap, meaning we're obviously focused more on the future than we have been in past years. I don't know if I would say that is in indication that they aren't focused on being competitive this year, or if this rebuild will give Garrett an out or not, but it is what is apparent by the lack of aggressive restructuring of anyone who isn't necessarily in our long term plans.

I fully expect this coming draft will be almost entirely focused on the defense. We might make a move towards OL, WR, or HB, but I for the most part this draft is going to be focused not only on defense, but the defensive line.

(2) Going into the draft, I think they'll want to get at least two if not three starters for the defense. Expect to see at least two rookies starting on this defensive line, perhaps three or a third rookie may end up in the linebacker corps. I would look at all the top defensive ends, defensive tackles, and linebackers expected to go within the first four rounds, because that is what the Cowboys will be looking at, and that will tell you who we're going to target.

Then you have to factor in other recent investments:

(3) JJ Wilcox, Matt Johnson, Tyrone Crawford, Ben Bass, DeVonte Holloman e.t.c. I think we'll see at least two or three of these guys become starters this year. You can basically pencil Wilcox in there already. A lot of people want us to invest in a safety, but we drafted both Wilcox and Johnson fairly high. Wilcox specifically with the idea that he would take some time to develop.

(1) You still have George Selvie, who I'd rather see as a rotational guy, but in the worst case scenario can be your starter at defensive end.

Then you hold out hope that other recent major investments pan out better than they have so far:

(3) Morris Claiborne, Bruce Carter, Brandon Carr. I still don't know why the Cowboys haven't asked Carr to take a pay cut, I think his pay for his performance the last two years is pretty obscene. I hope Sean Lee can really help turn around Bruce Carter, it would be great if Bruce Carter worked out for us, but almost above the two of them we need Claiborne to work out given that we traded up to get him. He needs to turn things around and stay healthy for a change. I like that they'll be going up against healthy young wide receivers with a wide range of attributes.

(1) You have to hope that Sean Lee can stay healthy throughout the year.

(1) Still holding out hope that we can sign Henry Melton at least to a 1 year deal.

And like I said, you'll probably have to go heavy or slightly heavy on defense again in 2015, but at that point it will depend mostly on how things pan out this year.

In closing, a lot of people are complaining about the signings of some of these backup type guys. Well those guys are brought in not because they are going to light up the world, but rather because right off the bat we were scrambling to find some sort of depth because of injuries at linebacker and defensive line. The FO has obviously decided to bring these types of guys in early rather than later in the year, when it is more difficult to scrape the bottom of the barrell, and more difficult to analyze whether it is worth keeping guys. How many guys did we bring in and then cut a week or two later? That is all this is, except it is proactive instead of reactive.

Going to take at least 2 years to get a decent defense. I agree with most of your post. Carr was the most solid player on d his first year though I dont know why you said last 2 years. We need competition everywhere I dont feel we have the starters set except for selvie, carr, scandrick, church, lee. All other positions are wide open and I hope the bring in tons of people.

I'm not complaining about any of our picks, but, man, our defense is really thin as of today. We've got a lot of work to do.

I've come to accept we will be pretty bad next year. No major improvements via free agency, and on top of that, we lose Jason Hatcher and DeMarcus Ware. Romo, Dez, Tyron,Witten and Murray will get us near 8-8, but the defense will be our achilles heel again. If it were possibile under the cap, I'd deal Romo to a contender just so he doesn't have to finish his career on some of the bad teams we have coming.

I won't go as far as to say the defense will be terrible next year. I think that with a successful youth movement we'll see some more inspired play out of the defense next year, as opposed to relying on veterans who would take up practice reps, but then be injured when it came to game time. I think we'll for the first time in a long time, see a legitimate pass rush form next year.

I think Carr was okay year one, I think we paid him to be better than that. He was just awful last year.

I think most people will be more excited about this defense next year after we draft our pass rushing defensive end(s).

Your hardon for hating on Brandon Carr is pathetic. He had one bad game with a putrid defensive line against the greatest WR of all time and that discounts every other game? You must've slept through every other game in the last two years because it isn't nearly as bad as your overly dramatic accusations of "obscenity" would lead anyone with an IQ above 70 to believe.

This is what they wanted. But they thought we could sign Melton, Linval Joseph, and magically bring Woody out of retirement apparently.

The people here make me want to drop kick baby seals.

I personally think the most important current player is Claiborne, he just has to be what we drafted him to be as we gave up a second to move up and he was projected to be so great. Carter is huge and the draft is even bigger.

We have no leverage to ask Carr to take a paycut, it really hurts us if we release him this year and we haven't restructured him to go easy on the cap. I mean you could threaten it because compared to the CB market this year, we severely overpaid him but he hasn't been trash and he's still young and you can't ask every one to take a paycut because you might get a reputation among players. He needs help though, no pass rush and the safety play isn't exactly stellar. Plus he's a man CB, likes to be physical, maybe he's struggling in cover? Not sure.

I agree with you. And that is a horrible plan when your QB is 34.

I just hope we bring in several young players with leadership qualities and the ability to fly around the ball. Sometimes several impact talents sparks the whole. I am however concerned about Mr. Lee's health, & Claiborne & Carter's development. Carr has been up and down, but he can be solid.

Here's to the draft, may it bring us two or three studs, and management a bit of focus.

I would take 75% of what we expected from Claiborne.....How about just stay on the field? he's shown flashes... brief ones.

The more and more I'm watching this offseason unfold and the way FA is going. I think we are setting ourselves up to make a run at JFB for the future. I get we need defense and all and we could use our other picks for that as well since this draft is deep in the DL position. With the purge of the old guys such as Ware, Hatch, spencer and Austin all we have left from that core is Romo and Witten.

So how I am seeing it is Dallas is brining in a bunch of guys to rotate on the DL and keeping cap room open to sign Dez and Tyron. It also leads me to believe that this could be Romos last year with the club with how they are shaping up the cap for next year and beyond. It would only make sense to draft Romos replacement while rebuilding a young defense and a young offense. Just something I can't get out of my head. You don't see them retooling signing high priced FA to try and win now. It's like they are really looking at a long term plan which a lot of people here have been hoping for. Just some food for thought

Our D as of now is going to be putrid. Hate to see Ware and Hatcher go and I was hoping we at least give Hatcher a chance back. We didn't even try to sign him in my opinion. But if your going to build with youth I think its the best course of action.

Now we really need to hit it big in the draft with Defensive linemen. I doubt will go after Melton. Not unless he really wants to come here to take a paycut. If not, Im hoping that we really go after Donald or a passrushing DE. In fact, Im all for spending the 1st 3 rounds of our Dline. Just about every position is going to need to be filled.

That's fair and I think we would all be pretty happy with that considering the expectations were through the roof around here and the rough start.
