We have a ton of bodies

Selvie
Lawrence
Crawford
Hayden
Bass
Mincey
Rayford
Bishop
Gardner
McClain
Coleman
Wilson
Spencer
Melton
Okoye
Whaley

Let's assume Spencer to the PUP for 6 games. I'd say Selvie, Lawrence, Crawford, McClain and Melton are sure things. You would love to see the young guys step up but I am not sure we could just take Bishop, Gardner and Coleman. Will be fun watching it all shake out.

I see the Cowboys keeping 10 DL

DE
Selvie
Lawrence
Gardner
Mincey

DT
Melton
McClain
Crawford
Bishop
Coleman
Bass

Crawford will be playing inside aswell as outside. And i think that allows them to get by with 4 Listed DEs

• 3 guys who would be hard to cut: Gardner, Coleman, Bishop.

Yeah, Coleman and Bishop are my two pet cats for this training camp.
Mine too, they just look the part and both play with good quickness, great power, and both have that low center of gravity that makes it very hard to block. I cannot wait to see them play with bullets flying!

If we're really rotating the top 8 a lot...might we consider keeping 11? That seems excessive, but I guess it depends how much we really rely on a rotation and how many positions the guys we keep can contribute at. Who you cutting here? Okoye. Hayden. Martez Wilson....anybody I'm missing? I feel like I'm missing somebody.

I'm not sure we've got a lot of guys we could effectively stash on a practice squad. I guess being able to PUP Spencer is a plus in that regard, as (if he's healthy) it lets us keep a good player in the wings for later in the year.

Unless Mincey turns it around once pads come on, I'd rather see Wilson or someone there.

I think its more likely Mincey shows up in camp before Wilson. Wilson is just somebody that looks the part but comes up empty when on the field.

Yeah, Mincey's 5 sacks in the last three years just has me holding my breath for the excitement...oh wait, the same as Wilson! At least Wilson is young(25) and can improve. Mincey pretty much is what he is.

This is the way I see it for now too. Of course need to see in TC how a few do.
Spencer & Whaley on PUP, and I can see Whaley eventually on IR. Need to see how Mincey does, but I think he will surprise people.
Gardner, Coleman, Bishop look like too good of prospects, so need to keep them, plus I think they can contribute this season. Can't expose them to PS.
Hayden will be expendable from this group unfortunately, but someone has to go, unless they keep 11.
But then you have Okoye in the mix too.
I think Rayford has some PS eligibility left, as does Wilson, then Bush who just signed, definately PS possibility, but will need to see him in games.
If from your list, anyone that may fight for a spot will be Bass, only because of the last 2 years of injuries.

Agreed. I don't get the Mincey love. Wilson is the most athletic guy of the bunch. Sounds like he doesn't really like playing defensive end though. And may not have what it takes in the heart/mind area.

If this defense is to be better than last year, Selvie, Hayden and Mincey should not make this roster. Those are JAGs!!!

Don't sleep on Dartwan Bush either at end. What might save Selvie is that he is dirt cheap, but the team may go younger with guys that they see as having more upside.

Another note to consider is the fact that Melton is due to be paid like a Super Star next year. If I were the 'Boys I'd be trying to find, and keep on the roster, any young guy that could potentially fill his spot next year and not have to pay out that HUGE contract.

That's where being able to PUP or IR a guy like Whaley helps. It also means keeping an extra interior guy like Coleman who has flashed some ability at the 3 so far.

No way we keep 11 d lineman, but I could certainly see us keeping 10.
Crawford
McClain
Melton
Lawrence

Gardner
Bishop
Coleman
Wilson

Bass
Bush (/Selvie/Spencer?)

Whaley (PUP/IR)

If Wilson flames out then we for sure keep Selvie. I don't think Spencer makes it back.

This is Jerrys problem IMO. He's too loyal to players and coaches. And this is a case of that. In everyday life you would praise Jerry for him being so kind in giving somebody a 2nd chance. But in a NFL enviroment its a problem for society. Go figure.

I don't think this has anything to do with kindness, etc. Jerry has the resources outside of the context of the team to help the guy if that was his primary motivation.

I think this has more to do with the fact that the cupboard is so bare at the DT position that Jerry feels he needs Brent.

And that, of course, is not surprising given this team's apparent aversion toward drafting DTs higher than the 6th or 7th round.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most teams run the Nickel in about 60% of defensive snaps? So, if that's the case, the starting base 4-3 isn't really something to freak out about. So even if we have a starting base D of McClain at the 1 and Mincey at DE, we'll still see more of Crawford at the 1 and Lawrence at DE. Or even if we have Durant starting over Holloman, we'll still see more of Holloman if he is in the nickel. And it doesn't matter which CB doesn't start since there will be 3 most of the time and Scandrick will always be in the slot.

I can see something like:

starting 4-3
Selvie - Melton - McClain - Mincey
Wilber - Durant - Carter
Scandrick - Carr - Church - Wilcox

nickel
Lawrence - Melton - Crawford - Selvie
Holloman - Carter
Claiborne - Carr - Scandrick - Church - Wilcox

It's my understanding that this is Mincey's first action. He's been off to the side before today.

Melton contract. That 2nd year is more of to prevent Melton from hitting FA. It gives the Cowboys some negotiating leverage. If he has a good year they likely tear that up with a long term deal.

I think its more likely Mincey shows up in camp before Wilson. Wilson is just somebody that looks the part but comes up empty when on the field.

Apparently Jeremy Mincey was immune to Gus Bradley's positive attitude.

Apparently not everybody bought into the positive message that Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley has been instilling in the locker room this season.

Former Jaguars defensive end Jeremy Mincey, who was released by the team last week for reportedly missing mandatory team meetings, told the media in his new home in Denver that he was lacking inspiration in Jacksonville.

Given the situation, it isn't surprising that Mincey appeared to check out this season. When the Jaguars signed him to a four-year deal prior to the 2012 season, the former regime did so expecting him to play the role of an every down 4-3 defensive end.

That role disappeared in the new defensive scheme utilized by Bradley, and Mincey was never a really good fit for what he wanted to do. His lack of playing time this season was proof of this as it appeared at times the Jaguars defensive staff was trying to shoehorn Mincey into certain situations.

Still, the fact that Mincey wasn't inspired by Bradley should raise some red flags about his overall commitment to football. Maybe getting a fresh start with the Broncos and playing for a familiar face in defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio is what he needs to get his inspiration back.

http://www.bigcatcountry.com/2013/12/19/5227498/jeremy-mincey-wasnt-inspired-in-jacksonville

And then he promptly put up these astounding numbers when he joined the Broncos - 1 tackle and 0 sacks in 10 games. They promptly cut him at seasons end. This is pretty dang indicative of "coming up empty".

This guy cares more about his rap recording company than playing football. Get rid of him now.
