Goose on Norm…
Norm I don’t have a life at this time every year. My first phone call was at 5 am this morning, and my last one will be at 9 tonight. I’m finalizing my final draft boards and I’ll start working on my Top 100 tomorrow for the Saturday Column.
We discussed Pac Man 3 weeks ago and you suggested that there are rumors around the league that it might not be a slam dunk that he’s even reinstated for this year. New information is coming out today.
I wasn’t privy to this information, but I just believe in character. I believe you need character on your football team, especially at the end of the year when things get tough. I don’t believe this information helps him. There is no absolutely guarantee he plays this year.
Do you think the trade still goes through before the draft?
I think the Titans would love to have that pick, but I got to believe the Cowboys have to be backing off a bit now. He is what he is.
Late word this morning is that Washington offered a 1st rounder and a 3rd rounder that could escalate to the 1st rounder. Is that an offer that Cincy has to take?
I would take that in a second. He’s been a headache for the last three years. I don’t know why Washington would trade multiple #1 picks for a 30 year old WR. I would pay the #28 pick for a younger WR like a Williams or Boldin, but I wouldn’t throw in extra 2nd and 3rds.
Do you think the Lions or Cardinals will see this offer and contract Washington offering Boldin or Williams for the same offer?
I don’t know right now that Roy Williams is on the market. Right now they are saying he isn’t, but he could be when the pick is on the clock and there is a good defensive player sitting there.
Quintin Grooves has had surgery for a rapid heartbeat … if you’re a team that liked him, what do you do with him now? The doctors said the surgery went well and it isn’t a problem.
A couple of years back Michael Lewis was diagnosed a hole in his heart and he slid. The Eagles took him in the 2nd and he went to a Pro Bowl. I don’t think it’s really hurting him much. I know one team has taken him off their board, but I still think he’s a late one or high two.
Do you see any team that could take Felix Jones before Dallas’ pick?
Tampa wants more speed and big plays on offense. I don’t know if they are focusing on RB or WR, but they want speed. They could be a concern at #20 of taking Felix Jones if McFadden, Mendelhall and Stewart are all off the board.
(caller) Donnie Avery vs. DeSean Jackson vs. Eddie Royal
I would put all three guys in the top of the 2nd. Royal is an elite kick returner. Jackson a punt returner. Avery might be the most explosive, but has some drop issues. They all have their issues. DeSean Jackson steps into the NFL as the smallest guy in the league, and you worry about a small guy like that staying healthy. Eddie Royal is probably the safest having been a multiple year starter, but the other two guys could be a homerun. If Avery could run routes he would be a mid first round guy. I talked to one scout and I asked him about drops and he said “Yeah, he drops some but the ones he catches he takes to the house”. I think DeSean’s size is probably a bigger issue than his character problems for most teams. I really believe DeSean is a 2nd round player, but I think someone will take him in the late 1st because of his return ability. I think he goes from the 25th pick on. I probably rank them Jackson – Avery – Royal.
Does any QB go in the first round after Ryan?
Brohm, Henne, Flacco are in the same tier. One or two will go in Round 1. I think there will be trade up around pick #28-31 where a QB is taken, to jump ahead of Miami at 32. The problem the Cowboys have is that everyone with a pick from 20 down is shopping their picks to the teams wanting a QB, so it’s going to be competitive. Everyone of those teams would trade down for an extra 2 or 3.
Could CB, RB and WR at #28 be picked clean?
I think at WR in particular you could draft a guy in the 5th round who could come in as your 3rd or 4th guy. This year has lot of depth. For CB’s, it’s heavy at the top. After the top 15, it empties .. so you got to get one in the first day.
(caller) Why take a RB in the 1st round? Shouldn’t we find another pass rusher and follow the Giants?
Marion Barber ran out of gas in the 2nd half in his playoff start last year. You have to have two running backs in this league these days. With Julius Jones leaving, they have to find someone else. They don’t have to take one in the 1st round, but the talent drops off dramatically after round 4 … so they need to take a RB by the 4th round. But I really think Dallas needs to get younger at WR and draft someone who is a #2 WR now but has the potential to grow into a #1. Last year Dallas should have stayed put and drafted Dewayne Bowe. If you want to make Tony Romo a better QB you have to surround him with weapons the way they did with Aikman. They have to take a WR with one of those two first round picks.
(caller) Wanting information about two kids my son went to high school with here in Dallas … Louis Baker and Ian Cunningham.
Louis Baker will be drafted as a special teams ace in the 6th or 7th round. Cunningham, it’s such a thin board for OL that anyone who was a 3 year starter is going to get drafted. It’s such a thin draft for OL, that they are going to be overdrafted higher than where they should be.
(Norm) There are so many OL playing in the league who were late round draft picks. Cant you always find offensive linemen late in drafts?
You can draft these guys late in the draft, but the key is you have to have the patience to develop them. That’s what the Colts do … they draft them and they let them sit for two years to develop and then they step in around their 3rd years and play at a high level.
