Receiving Group

Is this a wide receiver report from 2016 or 2017?

Dallas needed a speedy wide receiver last year and it was not addressed in the 2017 NFL draft.

I've complained a lot about Dez, but the receiving group as a unit is a problem.

They had Beasley and Witten run some deep routes in the Raiders game which indicates a problem because that's obviously not their strong-suit.

I think any 1 of the group would be better if surrounded by players that make up for their limitations.

Witten - Great possession receiver but lacks speed and is surrounded by WRs that lack any elite speed/elusiveness.

Beasley - Quick but lacks deep speed or run after catch elusiveness.

TWill - Can run all the routes but struggles to catch the ball on short routes because he does not react fast enough. He's not really good at catching deep balls either. He is decent in the intermediate area but is not good on contested/jump-balls.

Dez - Limited route tree and speed but still has some quickness and jumping ability. Lack of speed needs to be offset by more speed at #2/3 WR or TE. He might be much better if they had a legit alpha-dog #1 WR and Dez was the #2 or even if they had a #2 with Tyreek Hill type of speed/elusiveness.

Basically the combo of a slow #1 TE and a slowish #1 WR is difficult to overcome, but even moreso when the #2/3 WRs are limited.

Add to the above that the RBs Morris and Smith are not speed guys and you end up with a slowish offense when Zeke is out. It's too bad Dunbar didn't develop due to injuries because he is the type of backup RB that could add legit speed to the offense either as a RB or slot WR.

Bottom line: They must add some talent at WR and/or TE and an uber speed backup RB with receiving skills could also help.

We got some good corners, which were probably the priority, and got left with Switzer. The real problem was our wasted first round pick :(

Honestly it's really more Dak than anything else. I'm not even hating on Dak, I just recognize he's not Romo and doesn't have the arm talent yet.

I don't know why people think it's a knock on Dak for saying that. He's just not on that level. I'm sure he'll get better.

Even the rookie WR they kept, Noah B, isnt a burner, in fact are any of the WR's weve kept on the practice squad over the past few years ever been litterally burners?.......refresh my memory if there were.

Maybe Garretts scheme cannot incorporate 4.3 or less speed......they then cannot coordinate enough to get 2 or even 3 people into the same area the ball is being thrown to :)

Here we go with that narrative again.

Please explain when JWit was known for his speed.
If you read the entire post, you would notice I said any individual might be OK but as a group they are a problem. Witten needs more speed/athleticism surrounding him.

Having said that, Witten ran a 4.65 forty in pre-draft testing. That's a good number. He is not close to that now.

And what happened to Brice Butler?

He was supposed to be having this revenge return to Oakland.

Never saw him.

The WRs have withdrawn from helping DAK.

They seem to be more interested in blocking than pass catching.

Don't know if that is real or imagined or if they are more injured.

But the YPC is way way down.

Butler was out for the second week in a row with a foot injury.

The thing I noticed adn I do not know if the coaches are telling Dak to throw underneath more but int he first half the running game is going witht eh underneath passing game and then in the 2nd half the running game is dead because teams are cheating DBs up but they are not throwing over the top except in desperation. I know Dez saw a lot of bracket coverage but when you only call 5-7 yard routes with the defense cheating up for the run its like passing in the endzone where everything is compressed.

That’s what I keep saying. We’re gonna draft a first round wr and everybody will be whining about how he also gets no separation lol.

Agree. The likelihood is Dez will be a Cowboy for another 2 seasons. Need a better 2nd outside WR. Someone who can win with speed and route runnning. Williams was fine when Dez was a monster and a top 5 WR. With that no longer the case, we need a better player at that 2nd boundary WR. That will balance the field.

I'm not sure who's available but I'd use one of the comp picks in the 4th round on the best RB on the board.

These are my thoughts too. With Romo, Dez would have much better stats. Romo throws the perfect fade to Dez. Plus Romo's knowledge of the game would only help him work with Dez on routes. Not force it everytime to Dez like Dak does.

Not comparing Dez to Randy Moss, but when Moss went to Oakland for 2 years, people thought he was done. Then he went to a pure pocket passer, he had a monster season again. Becareful what you ask for Dez haters... I can see him having a good year with a pure pocket gunslinger.

Hire whatever scout Pittsburg has scouting WR’s. Or sneak a peak at their draft board. Wr’s crew needs a makeover.

The problem is scheme/coaching and to a lesser degree QB play. You talk about Pittsburgh, Ben has thrown for over 1,000 yards more than Dak. Their running back has more receiving yards than every receiver on this team not named Dez Bryant, by a long shot. You guys really think rookie WRs are going to step into THIS offense and show out? lol.

Wallace, Sanders, Brown, Shuster, Bryant. They know how to draft wr’s

Let me put that up for you again

You guys thinking drafting more WRs is the answer. The system is broken.

We lack athletes and most of all scheme.

Look at the Pat's, other than Cook's, every year they have average-good Wr's and still get it done with the best of them. Brady being the GOAT helps, but they also help the Wr's with scheme.

Unlike us, we just tell them line up and try to get open on their own

That's a fair post
