Recognizing and addressing needs

Other than maybe Iowa Football and Basketball, I know of NO ORGANIZATION in all of sports that after seasons end so easily convinces themselves that all they need is a little tweaking, and that nothing major needs to be done. It is already plain to see that we are in for EXACTLY the same BS next year with this team....I cannot take it anymore.

I hear your frustration but we have addressed needs. At one time our oline was terrible and we invested three first round picks. Last year we addressed the secondary with three picks. Our problem has been with wasting second round picks and coaching. Not sure even if we had the most talented roster we’d advance in the playoffs.

------as an Iowa Alumni I feel your pain.

Jerrah needs to take both Barta and The Clapping Carrot hunting into some deep woods.
make sure the group includes Dick Cheney with plenty of ammunition.

We have been poor at evaluating needs accurately. Unfortunately, that is accurate.

Later round picks have been our downfall and inability to add quality depth to the roster. We have spent hundreds if not thousand of hours on the other boards discussing tape giving our "knowledge" and scouting thoughts on players and some of us have been very good and could have built a better team then whats going on now.

We have done well in the early rounds, but winners win with that and some quality picks here and there in the later rounds where we have lacked although I think Woods is going to be a very good one for us.

I'm guessing much of the problem lies in identifying needs, instead of identifying opportunities to improve.

We don't "need" to replace X, Y, and Z...
We settle for "good enough" year after year. We went into 2015 *planning* to start the Underwear Thief.

Even when the *need* is clear, we shrug. It's a bad joke that Linehan is still with this team. The offense lurched from one colossal coaching failure to the next.

Let them think we don't "need" to replace Linehan. How can they possibly think there was no possibly to improve on the 2017 crapfest?

A lot of blame to throw around for the offense digressing and Linehan is one you can point fingers at for sure, but you can also point fingers at significant drop off on the o-line, and the lack of separation our receivers create.

Dez is a guy who is a jump ball player or a guy you need time so he can get across the field, and with a safety over the top and drop off in o-line that takes him away fairly easy. Dez simply doesn't create separation he has always been able to find soft spots in the zone or go over the top.

T-Will creates a bit of separation but body catching closes that up significantly.

Witten is a 5 yard pass catcher at this point of his career and it doesn't help open anything up for the other guys.

Beasley is the only guy who can create separation but he is more of a short yardage WR.

Brice Butler was the one guy we had who could beat the CB deep and had success there, but he doesn't bring much to the table outside of a 9 route.

This team needs to rebuild the receivers on this team to be more dynamic IMO, and I look at the Lions in what they did by getting Tate and Jones Jr who both can create in a multitude of ways and there contracts combine is what Dez's contract is.

If I'm the Cowboys I'm looking for a overhaul at WR and with the extra picks we got and potentially cutting Dez we have the ability to start that overhaul in a big way this year.

Linehan is driving the offensive bus, so he has a hand in most problems on offense.

I don't put the ramp up time for Collins on him. Or the injuries to Smith. Or our wideouts limited ability in getting separation, and spreading the field to make space for the other receivers.

But the decisions about how to use Green are on the coaches. The failure to use Butler more is on the coaches. There are things Linehan should have done, but didn't, and things he did do, that he shouldn't have. Whatever limitations the players have, Linehan is just making bad decisions.

I think we should go overhaul at wideout too. Dez gone this year. Williams gone next. We could really use our #2 TE contributing to the passing game this year as we start this transition. Maybe we could start isolating Beasley on one side, but significantly off the sideline so he can cut either way. And use Zeke in the passing game more. If our wideouts aren't a great threat, lean on other guys.

I love the draft. It's my fave 3 days of the year but I don't hold out the eternal hope that we have a draft class to turn this team around.

Every year I read how our class will take us over the top.
Well it's basically failed. Our first rounders have generally been hits but the rest of our drafts have failed to become the core of this team....

Oh the drafts could take us over the top, but a team needs a coaching staff to make it happen.
Sadly we do not have that. Maybe the players can win in spite of that. Some people do win the lotto you know, unless that is fake news.

But come on no Zeke for 6 games, banged up oline, wr who cannot separate, and a now 1 trick pony in Witten and that is one slow moving trick what can you expect. We do not have 1 creator at wr, true lack of a playmaker who can catch and run. You put OBJ on this team with this oline and running game he would be more amazing then her already is.

With that being said I love the thought of Christian Kirk who I think is that kind of playmaker.

Love his speed, but he played mostly slot at A&M and is inexperienced as a deep WR. Might be primarily a deep threat, hard to say at this point. Yes, I likey.

The guy is one of the most explosive offensive players in college football and was limited at A&M scheme and qb. The dude can catch a slant and take it to the house and can get over the top of a defense which are things this team lacks.

The limitations of our offensives players do not absolve Linehan of his horrendous decisions.

Dez's drops do not absolve Dak of his misses.
Dak's misses do not absolve Dez of his drops.

Oline not blocking like they did the year before, Zeke not playing 16 games don’t change this teams fortunes if they played and/ eligible to play to 2016 standards?

The Cowboys lost 3 games by less then a td. There’s no question Linehan needs to step it up, but we weren’t having this convo after last season. This team needs to find a fix at LG, better play at RT, but most importantly needs Tyron back at full health.

They also need receivers who can create separation because Dez, Williams, and Witten do not do that often enough and imo it need to be a strong emphasis this offseason in rebuilding the receiving core.

The team needs to stop saying guys "need to step up", start evaluating them as they are, and take appropriate action based on that evaluation.

Like I posted nobody was calling for Linehan's job after 2016.

Every coach on the roster is essentially on a year contract, so we will see what is done on the field.

What needs to be done in the off-season is getting players healthy, stronger, and players who compete and can get open and Linehan plays a big part in the getting players open part.

For most of us, watching the Eagles win the SB was a perfect example of how far away we are from actually winning it all. Jerry saw just the opposite. He was quoted as saying that the Eagles winning showed him how close they are. That they could have won it all had things gone their way. LOL

We are being run by the biggest Cowboys homer there is. Its pathetic. All you can do is laugh.

Not sure where you got this from, but I was, and there were a host of others at the old website calling for Linehan's job. You might be wrong on this one, just sayin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's also bad in a crowd, has trouble holding onto the ball, and has major problems against the press.

You can state his good, I can state his bad, that's fun. However, I seldom fall in love w/ prospects. I realize that they are all prospects and anyone can bust.

At present, we do need WR's. Yes, plural. However, we also need MLB, NT, and prolly S. And an OL. Lots of needs.

So, yes, I do like him. Wouldn't complain at him in the 1st. Nice potential as an outside WR.
