I have read post after post where people are stating that Sean Payton loves Romo and how we could trade him to New Orleans for a mid-round draft pick.

My question is, where is the proof of Payton's interest in Romo? I am not saying it doesn't exist, but I have yet to see any proof beyond users repeating what others have said on this site.

As far as I know, Parcells was the one who liked Romo a lot. So, if anyone has any official credible articles (and no, nothing from PFT is credible), I would greatly appreciate you posting them in this thread.

I think JFE ( Jennifer Floyd Engel) and others have had tidbits on their articles, especially during SB, that Payton couldn't stop talking about Tony Romo or how much he liked him. I tried Fort Worth Star Telegram archives but I guess you have to pay to get them.

Also on Randy Galloway show, during SB weekend, Jerry Jones said that Peyton Likes Romo a lot and had said to him that if he ever became a Head coach, he would trade for Romo or something to that effect.

I spoke with Payton at training camp and I ask him how he likes Romo? He just said that Romo is talented and working hard.......the political answer for fans.

Yeah, but that doesn't scream "love" which is what I'm reading in every post. I'm neither a Romo fan or hater but I'm just trying to get some real proof that Payton would be interested in giving up a mid-round pick. I mean why not just draft a quarterback themselves with that mid-round pick?

I guess I just figured with all the users saying "Payton loves Romo" that asking for an article or two would be a simple chore.

Looking for an article and found this. Kind of interesting.

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfoot2/misc/payton_history.htm

2002, Tony Romo, QB, Eastern Illinois

romo.jpg
-- Romo passed for 2,950 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2002, completing 237 of 363 passes (65.3 percent) in leading Eastern Illinois to an 8-3 record, the Ohio Valley Conference co-title, and a I-AA playoff berth. He headed one of the most prolific offenses in the nation during the 2002 season, as the Panthers averaged 37.7 points per game despite the presence of two I-A opponents and no sub-I-AA competition on its ’02 slate. The Burlington, WI native finished his career with 84 touchdown passes, shattering the previous school mark of 75 held by current Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton. Romo was signed as a free agent by the Cowboys following his senior season. Romo is now playing quarterback in his third season with the Dallas Cowboys.

Great find! Definitely adds a new factor into the equation.

Just a guess but:

Same school, Broke his records = Payton wants to live vicariously through Romo and see him succeed in the NFL?

I don't care either way. I like Romo, But if we could get a pick for him that would be O.K. too. There is talk about us looking at one in the draft. Who knows?

You didn't realize they went to the same school? That's been reported since we got him as an UFA.

I thought that was common knowledge.

IRVING, Texas -- No, Tony Romo is not packing his bags following his quarterback coach from the Dallas Cowboys to the New Orleans Saints.

That is not to say the younger of the arguably two best quarterbacks in Eastern Illinois football history would mind continuing to work for Sean Payton as he did the past three years at Dallas where Payton was quarterbacks coach before landing the Saints head job this week.

“Yeah, I saw Sean more than anybody else,” Romo said. “We definitely had a good relationship.”

Then again, Romo is not complaining about working for the Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells, who carries the reputation as a hard man for whom to work.

Undrafted Romo, Taylor get free agent chances

BY BRIAN NIELSEN, Sports Editor

Feelings of rejection did not last too long for two Eastern Illinois football All-Americans Sunday.

Shortly after the seven rounds of the NFL draft were completed without either being selected, quarterback Tony Romo agreed to a free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys and running back J.R. Taylor was picked up by the Green Bay Packers.

"I went from a pretty somber mood to pretty excited," Romo said. "We had about 20 teams calling. They said 'We never expected you to be a free agent, but for our sake we're glad you are. I talked to Jerry Jones, Bill Parcells, Mike Shanahan and Dave McGinnis."

Rather than playing for the EIU alum Shanahan, who is the Denver Broncos' head coach, Romo has decided to try to play for the quarterback whose EIU passing touchdown records he broke, Sean Payton, who this year made the move to assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach under Parcells at Dallas.

"Honestly, it was really a good situation," Romo said. "Sean Payton had expressed he really liked me at the combine. The quarterbacks there aren't real stable. The real reason, what sold me was coach Parcells said, "I'll be honest with you, I think you have a great opportunity to play here. I'm going to be frank with you. I don't know who our No. 1 is. We're going to give you the chance to play in every preseason game and you'll roll with the No. 1s in practice."

Well better finds than me, but first piece is a clear indication, Romo has been thought of a Sean's boy from the begining. Unfortunately I can't find it, but I remember that Parcells indicating Peyton wanted to start Romo over Carter, during 2003 season and it was Parcells who didn't want to do that.

From Fort Worth Star-Telegram
( 08/27/2003)

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Tony Romo could end up leapfrogging over Chad Hutchinson for the primary backup position behind starter Quincy Carter.

I just haven't followed our "backup" quarterback as closely as the other players :)

I still haven't seen an article confirming that Payton likes/loves Romo enough that would lead me to believe he would trade for him.

The comments from before he was signed as a free agent are really a non-factor because it's obvious the Cowboys wouldn't have signed him had Payton and Parcells not liked him.

I guess what I'm saying is that from all the articles I have read, Parcells has been the big Romo fan. While Payton may like him as well, Parcells is the one who brought him here and I have yet to see anything from Payton that even hints that he would be willing to give up a mid-round pick in a trade for him.

I mean Parcells really liked Keyshawn Johnson, but he was released. Again, I'm not saying a trade won't happen, it's just everyone constantly speaks about how Payton "loves" Romo and I've yet to see anything beyond a mild compliment from a third party that just about any offensive coordinator would make toward their quarterbacks.

I am not sure why an article is more of a proof to you then what was said in interviews etc.

I had recapped or somewhat quoted Jerry Jones telling Randy Galloway about what Peyton said to him about Romo, 2-3 months ago, i.e. he would trade for him. But obviously thats Jerry Speaking, you could always says he just blowing smoke.

But combined with many indications from various reporters, you can say thats is true or that Peyton might be inclined to do that. Its the same as Rumored Tony Romo to Jets for 3rd round pick. It seems to be only from one source there, but I don't doubt the credibility as some might do here.

Anyway bottom line, since you haven't followed all the articles closely, then you might have missed all those articles or tidbits about how much Sean Peyton is rumored to like Romo. No one ever said Parcells doesn't like Romo, infact most think Romo is also Parcells pet. Parcells also liked Keyshaun when he traded him to Tampa Bay. So Parcells can remove himself from liking or not liking a player when he sees a value in trading.

Bottom line, everyone is speculating about Romo being traded for due to previous reports and rumors. It doesn't mean its going to happen or everyone has to believe it either. So I guess you might think thats baseless or not enough proof.

If you could point me to this interview, that would greatly help.

I don't question the possibility. When I read "since Payton loves Romo" in post after post, I just expected there would be a lot more proof than a couple of obscure third party references that Payton liked Romo, which when said, doesn't come across as anything beyond what any other OC would say about the quarterbacks on their roster.

Bottom line, everyone is speculating about Romo being traded for due to previous reports and rumors. It doesn't mean its going to happen or everyone has to believe it either. So I guess you might think thats baseless or not enough proof.
Again, I don't disagree with the idea ..

This has really turned into a complicated process .. I honestly expected I would get several articles posted immediately. It was not that I doubted it as much as I just wanted to see what everyone else had been reading that made the idea highly likely given the comments by other users. If I had realized that the trade idea was based off a couple of mild comments from Payton repeated by other people then I would have never asked.
