Imagine Dontari Poe at 1tech, Zack Brown at LB, a 1st round stud WR and Zeke not suspended. Combine that with young players like Lewis, Awuzie and Woods in their 2nd year.

Getting back to 13-3 is not that far fetched.

As long as the structure remains as it is with the way the talent is evaluated, nothing will change. It is not just how the team looks at outside prospects, but also how they self scout the existing personnel.

There will continue to be inflation of the actual talent on this team. There will continue to be the internal perception that the roster is set and that there are only a few positions that need true upgrades.

Chief will be at WR, where they will continue to believe that Dez Bryant is an alpha WR. They will look at the DL and assume since things got better this year that it is set. They will go after the LB position, as it will be what the DBs were in this past draft.

April will come. We will plug the obvious leaking holes on the roster with players we say were steals and then smugly go about our business. But as usual, there will be some unexpected hole in the dyke that develops that unravels next year because they simply do not know how to effectively build a roster. And oh yes, Garrett will be back.

Get the talent and depth to a point where Garrett can't use it as an excuse when talking to Jerry.
That is not possible. He always blames the execution and has done it since he has been a head coach and probably even back to when he was a coordinator.

For all we know, he talks up the talent just as much as everyone else, then blames things like "mental errors" and "execution" to cover up the fact his schemes are inadequate and his supporting staff of coordinators are not antiquated.

Jones is not smart enough himself to see through the con job.

Good point.

But there's not really a way to evaluate your talent when coaching doesn't put them in a better position though.

and sooner than we think, as we waste the years of rookie contracts of Dek, Zeke, .......the window closes

To the point in Dez Bryant:

I don't think it's a fair criticism of the FO.

He had a great 2014 before he contract, and nobody wanted to lose him because he was arguably the 2nd best WR in the league at that point.

Then there were injury issues, which are damning in their own right. But it isn't until this year where it makes complete sense that the dude is not a legit #1.

So yeah. If they don't do something this year they're bonkers.

It is easy this season to see that no Lee or Tyron killed the team. Throw in no Zeke and it's over the top.

Jerry: Garrett your team sucked.

Garrett: Tyron was replaced by Green/Bell, Lee was replaced by Jaylon/Durant and Zeke was replaced by Morris/Smith.

Jerry: OK, we need more players. You're not fired (yet).

I agree we need to use free agency and stop this bargain basement crap. The Giants, Commanders, and Eagles use free agency to get better. Why can't the Cowboys. Imagine two defensive linemen, a linebacker, and a safety would do for this team. Then we could draft the best players available or trade up. With a 3rd place schedule we would be good again.

Like I said, I get your point.

It makes total sense.

But on the flip side, surely Jerry's got to ask:

"What good are you if you need the best player at every position?"

There has not been a losing year in a long time where a significant and obvious player issue didn't exist.

2014 Winning
2015 QB
2016 Winning
2017 Zeke, Lee, Tyron, 4 veteran DBs gone.

Jerry still communicates with Barry Switzer who would say about 25 times per interview that talent wins.

So many things would have to be perfect for Garett to win a SB. Perfect schedule, no injuries, stacked talent, every other team sucking.

We know this is difficult, which is why I would rather Jones spend the energy on new coaching rather than players.
It's me dreaming of course, we're stuck with Garrett.

It's like putting an amateur inside an F1 racecar. on paper it's fast but... it's still Garrett driving.
