We are?
Is our OL currently better than theirs? No
Is our running game/running back better? No
Are Key/Glenn better than Burress/Toomer? Not according to stats and production.
Is our QB better? By production and rank, yes, but certainly their guy is more mobile, sacked less, and given much more time.
Is Witten better than Shockey? No, imo...I'd call it a wash though Shockey seems to have a propensity for bigger downfield plays.
Is our DL better than theirs? Deeper maybe, better...nope...we'd love to have either of their DEs and overal pass rush.
Are our LBs better than theirs? No, certainly not at this point.
Is our secondary better than theirs? Yes, definitely when Henry is healthy and true even now.
Is our kicker better? No...even with Feeley's 3 misses on Sunday, he's missed only 5 all year.
Is our punter better? potentially yes, but has the guy had a single game where he punted as well as he was in preseason?
I think we can win if we can protect Bledsoe and protect the football, but to argue that we are hands down a better team than the Giants is a little silly right now, imo...They've gone about building that team in the right way, and it looks like it will be the Cowboys and Giants for the next few years in the NFC EAst.
To me the better question would be how we match up with them.
What I mean is, instead of do we have a better DL than them... it would be do we have a better DL than they have OL.
If you want to see which team might have more success over the course of a season then you need to look at it like, "Who has the better QB?" and "Which OL is better?" However, if you want to look at who should win the battle in the trenches between Dallas and NY... I think you should look at their OL vs. our DL. Our DL vs. their OL. Will the Cowboys be able to pass? Look at their DB's vs. our WR's. This is the best way, IMO to look at a matchup between two teams.
So I'll look at the Dallas/NYG game in that fashion:
Is our OL better than their DL? Decidedly no. This matchup concerns me... particularly their ends vs. our tackles. Still, we will provide help with TE's and chipping backs. We can protect Bledsoe like that, but it will lean us towards a more conservative approach because the max protect will be bringing receivers out of the passing routes to block. We will be able to max protect, but the run blocking is what worries me... we may not be able to generate any running room for our backs. They should come with some run blitzes which will muck up the running game. With some runs to the perimeter and some play action passes... and possibly some screens, we should be able to counter that tactic though. I guess this matchup will come down to who's playing better and game planning. The chess game between their D and our O should provide the winner of this battle.
Advantage Giants
Are our WR's better than their DB's? I think the answer is yes. Their defensive backfield is nothing to get too worried about, although they can play well with the pressure the front 4 can generate. Glenn's speed and Keyshawn's physical game will be a hard matchup for the Giants. Throw in Crayton who I think is (if healthy) way better than their 3rd CB and we could have quite a bit of success passing the ball. If Bledsoe and the receivers are clicking tomorrow... it could turn out to be a very long day for the giants defensive backs. Throw in Witten who could kill the Giants in the middle of the field where they've been vulnerable, and I think we have a lot of potential to move the ball through the air.
Advantage Cowboys
Is the three headed RB of Dallas better than the LB's and Safeties of the Giants? Again, I think the answer is yes. The Giants linebackers and safties aren't anything special, although they are solid. But our backs, with all three able to stay fresh as the game wears on, are a little more than solid. Think how opposing defensive coordinators must feel when getting ready for JJ, MBIII, and TT. Jones and TT both have the ability to take it all the way on any carry and MBIII is just a tough, tough runner who wears down a defense. If we're able to sustain drives, our stable of RB's could start to really wear on the Giants by the end of the 3rd quarter. Of course the OL will help determine the outcome of this matchup as well, but our backs are going to have to beat their LB's and Safeties some man on man.
Advantage Cowboys
Is the Dallas DL better than the Giants OL? Yes. We have talent there. We have depth there. We have better athletes than the Giants do on their OL. As the game wears on, we should be able to wear down the Giants OL. We have held some very good running teams to some low yardage (Seattle, Denver, San Diego) and I don't see why tomorrow should be any different. Our DL is physical and that starts to take it's toll... even without the superior depth the Cowboys have on their DL.
Advantage Cowboys
How do our DB's match up with their WR's? With Henry, I see this as a matchup that favors Dallas. Without him, I don't know. The Giants WR's really don't scare me very much. Plaxico only worries me from the standpoint of jump ball types of scenarios. He really lacks quickness in and out of his cuts and can't get much separation. Both Newman and Glenn have extreme quicks so they'll be close to Plax when the ball is coming. If they let Burress get position, he can shield the DB effectively from the ball. He's like Keyshawn in that he doesn't get open with quickness but with his size he catches it when he's covered. Toomer is less of a threat and never really seems to have good days against the Cowboys... maybe because in the last few years, he's been "Roy'ed" a few times by our SS. Funny, I haven't seen Toomer push Roy in the back since he did it a couple of years ago... Speaking of Williams, he'll have to be on his game tomorrow. Shockey and Tiki will both take turns being Roy's responsibility throughout the day and I think those two matchups are going to go a long way toward determining the outcome of the game. Shockey got shut out nearly the whole game earlier against Dallas, but then right at the end of the game, he was able to get free and catch a couple on Roy. That's the way it goes for DB's... shut them out all game and then allow a long pass and you lose the battle for the day. Not fair, but that's the way it is. I see this as pretty even with Henry on the sideline.
Advantage Even
Tiki Vs. Dallas LB's and Safeties? This is a tough one. I think Tiki is one of the better backs in the NFL and is a great receiving back. Great at cutbacks and screens. Roy Williams is probably the best run support safety in the NFL though. Roy has yet to catch Tiki flush with a hit. It's will enentually happen and when it does, it may not be pretty for Tiki. Just ask Emmitt. Tomorrow might be that day. Ware has become a very good player against the run too, which is impressive for a rookie pass rush specialist. It's hard to run on Ware's side of the line. Fujita is another story. The last couple of weeks, teams have found success running right. I've watched Fujita and he hasn't impressed me... particularly with his run defense. Burnett might be a tad slow learning as a rookie and better suited for ILB, but he's twice the athlete Fujita is and I think he's going to see more and more playing time as he eases into Fujita's position. Still, in this game Tiki running right will be a very real concern. As little as Barber is, he's always done a lot of damage on runs up the middle and is dangerous on cutbacks. Bradie James and Scott Shanle and even Fowler have been very solid against the run. I don't think Tiki will find much success up the middle. Really, the only time we've given up much running through the middle is when Dallas is in it's nickel 4-3. Just like last week when Dayne ran through the middle of the line when we were expecting pass. Overall, the Dallas backers have been very hard to run against and I don't see this week being any different.
Advantage Cowboys
Special Teams? I think this favors Dallas and the Vikings would agree with me since they won their game with the Giants on special teams. Special teams boils down to this: Our kicker sucks less than theirs.
Advantage Cowboys
Coaching? I'll call this one even, although I do think Parcells is better than Coughlin. The assistants even it out though.
Advantage Even
Home field?
Advantage Giants
It isn't as easy as doing this and then counting up the "advantage Cowboys" and the "advantage giants" and then doing the math. There are just too many variables that go into a football game. Momentum. The Crowd. Gameplans. Wind and weather. Injuries. Coaching decisions.
Still, by doing this you can get some rough idea of who might have the advantage with all other things being equal. Certainly, the fact that there are 5 "advantage Cowboys", 2 "advantage Giants" and 2 "advantage Even" is better for the Cowboys than for the Giants. I'm sure a lot of you will see it differently, but that really is how I see it. I think that if Dallas doesn't have a lot of turnovers or penalties and they simply play their game... the Cowboys should walk out of the Meadowlands with not only a victory, but with the East all but sewn up.
