Remaining Free Agents Dallas Should Target?

Ok, now that Al Davis has once again overpaid for a free agent Dallas is out of the Javon Walker sweepstakes. And unless he came to Dallas on an incentive contract it wasn't worth it. That being said which remaining free agents do you think Dallas should target? On the offensive side the list has really narrowed to 4 players, covering the wide receiver and running back positions: Bryant Johnson, DJ Hackett, Tatum Bell and Warrick Dunn. If I were to pick two from that list it would be Hackett and Bell. Johnson was an underachiever and Dunn is 33, both Hackett and Bell are young and talented. On defense at this point the only target could be Dyson the CB from the Jets or Shawn Springs if he's cut from the Commanders. I'm not sure but I think Dyson is younger so I would like to see Dallas go after him first. What do you guys think?

Truthfully, none. At this juncture we should be focused solely upon the Draft, not Free Agency. The most important deals in Free Agency that we had to get done were (in no particular order) the following.

Flozell
Hamlin
Barber
Canty

If we lose Reeves, Nate Jones, Julius, and Davis, and do not sign any true UFAs that will mean 4 Compensatory picks in the 2009 Draft.

I believe the strategy employed by Jerry, Stephen, Ciskowski, and Wade has been prefect to this point. AdamJT13 pointed out yesterday that of the last 7 Super Bowl winners none of them went had after UFAs in their off season. Breaking the bank rarely pays off. See Washington...

At WR, I like Hackett (excluding R Williams, of course).

At RB, there are more options.

I think R Cartwright could be a good 3rd RB, and he would help a lot with STs (kick returner). Plus, it wouldn't stop JJ from spending a pick on a number 2 RB in the Draft.

Another RB candidate, is J Chapman (sp?) from Miami. Again, he could play either number 2 or number 3 RB. And I think he's also good on STs, though I'm not 100% sure.

D Ward of the NY Giants is maybe my favorite option, but for the number 2 RB position.

Of course, then there is Dunn and T Bell.

I'd think any of these 5 options is reasonably priced.

I'm not sure how I'd want to rank these guys though. It would depend if we're looking for a number 2 or number 3 guy.

They should just wait it out free agency wise and see if any bargains pop up. Dunn or Bell may end up settling for a one year minimum type deal at some point. Hackett and Johnson should get more than they are worth the way this market is going.

Nobody. There is absolutely nobody in free agency left who would be an upgrade at any position except running back, but the young crop of running backs is the best in my memory and IMO that is where we should go.

Cornerback and running back first round WR second.

Perhaps Hackett if he comes cheap. Wouldn't mind Julius coming back if he gets some humble pie from his one visit tour of the league and can accept a back-up role at a reasonable cost. JJ was a kick returner in college, so maybe he could add some touches on special teams.

But, if overspending must be done, let other teams do it.

Agreed.

He and Dyson are on my 'wish list' now that it doesn't appear that Shawn Springs will be released.

Both contingent on a reasonable asking price.

The money flying around right now is still crazy!

At this point, we are watching to see who else gets released. There isn't any FA's I want really. I'd rather draft wisely.

I forgot to mention in my first post, but I'd take Roy Williams for a 2nd round pick, or even a first round pick if need be. My guess is he could be dealt for a 2nd round pick, that's what the initial asking price was and could be as the draft gets closer.

I agree, at this point, there really aren't any FAs left that impress me very much. I would prefer we draft wisely instead of overpaying for a FA who may contribute enough to justify his salary. I have a feeling Jones will make a selection with one of our 1st rounders, but then he will probably do his best to try to find a partner to trade down with the remaining 1st round pick in the hope of picking up another 2nd and/or 3rd rounder instead of making 2 picks in the 1st round.

Besides resigning *some* of our own. Dunn is probably the only other named FA I would look at. I would also examine the other small/no-name FAs to see if there might be a quality guy out there that could fill a spot better than what we may get in the draft.

I want to resign some of our Free Agents but I don't want to look at any of the other Free Agents, it is now time to look toward the Draft.

Yes. The most important moves, right now, to me are resigning Barber, Canty, and Hamlin to long term deals.

None of these guys really get me excited and for the money they would want, it is not worth it.

Time to focus on the draft, we only have $4 mill left anyways.

If Hackett can play and we get him cheap then ok. We could use a vet WR but only if cheap and can really add something. Same thing with a CB altho I consider Springs a decent 3rd CB.

Something always comes up during camp.
