Buzz up! Looking for his shot in the NFL, Jason Chery gets another chance to leave an impression on professional scouts this weekend.

The former UL wide receiver and special teams standout is set to play in the third annual Texas vs. the Nation all-star bowl at 2 p.m. today at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. Chery will suit up for the Nation team under Howard Schnellenberger, the head coach at Sun Belt member Florida Atlantic.

It will be Chery's first game with his new bulked-up physique. While training for the past month in Houston, he has added 12 pounds through working out and eating right.

Chery, who has been timed at 4.22 seconds in the 40-yard dash, now carries 192 pounds on his 5-foot-11 frame. He said he feels even stronger and faster from all the different techniques he's learned this week.

"I'm just ready to show what I can do," Chery said via cell phone Friday. "If the ball is thrown to me I need to show that I can catch it and that I can run the right routes.

"I need to make everything look like it's easy."

Chery made it look easy as a senior, earning second team All-Sun Belt Conference honors as a wide receiver and an all-purpose player.

The Haiti native scored 11 touchdowns, ranked second in the league in all-purpose yards (1,921) and receiving touchdowns (seven), fifth in receiving yards (656) and seventh in receptions (46). His all-purpose yardage was the second-highest in conference history. He also added 14 tackles on special teams.

Chery enjoyed a career night in UL's 59-30 win over North Texas on Oct. 11. He racked up 339 yards and five touchdowns on eight touches, scoring on catches of 17, 49 and 57 yards, an 81-yard run and a 97-yard kickoff return. He tied league records (since broken) for touchdowns and points scored (30).

His all-around play helped the Cajuns finish second in the Sun Belt and win six games for the third time in four years.

"I'm really proud for Jason," UL coach Rickey Bustle said. "I think he sure deserves a chance to play in this game.

"It shows a lot about the players we have and recruit to be in our program."

Chery has received some good feedback from pro scouts during his week in El Paso. He received a lot of interest throughout the fall from the Green Bay Packers. There have been multiple media reports praising Chery's pass-catching ability and game-breaking speed.

"I've spoken to almost every scout that's been out here," Chery said. "They all said they liked my speed and ability as a wide receiver and special teams threat. They tell me I have a shot and to just keep playing.

"I don't even know where I'm going to land, but I know I'm going to land somewhere."

After today's game, Chery is expected to return to Houston and continue to train for UL's Pro Day in early March. The NFL draft is April 25-26 in New York City.

Former UL defensive backs LaMar Morgan and Kyle Ward played in last year's Texas vs. the Nation all-star bowl.

Draft Scout Jason Chery News
01/30/09 - Former Louisiana wide receiver/kick returner Jason Chery will participate in the third Annual Texas vs. the Nation all-star bowl this Saturday, Jan. 31 at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. Former Cajuns running back Tyrell Fenroy was named to the team as an alternate/injury replacement, but it appears that he will not be added the active roster. Florida Atlantic head coach Howard Schnellenberger will coach the Nation team which Chery is listed as the primary kick returner. He is also expected to see time at wide receiver and on special teams. Chery becomes the tenth Cajuns player to be invited to a post-season bowl game under head coach Rickey Bustle. Seven of the previous nine players to be invited to bowl games have either been drafted or signed NFL free agent contracts. “This is a great opportunity for Jason,” said Bustle. “Our program has established a history of sending seniors to all-star bowls and to the NFL.” Chery earned praise on the All-Sun Belt team at wide receiver after finishing second in the SBC in receiving touchdowns, fifth in receiving yards and seventh in receptions. He ranked third in the conference in yards per reception among players with at least 40 catches. His play on special teams also earned Chery recognition on the second team as an all-purpose selection. - Ragin’ Cajuns football 01/28/09 - Texas vs. The Nation, Tuesday: At 5-10, 189, Louisiana-Lafayette's Jason Chery is not the most physically imposing receiver in El Paso, but he's caught everything thrown his direction. Whether on a slant, quick-out or nine route, Chery has the quickness to get position on his man and the hands to secure each pass. - Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com 12/09/08 - 2008 ALL-SUN BELT CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM: Jason Chery (ULL, Sr., WR, #5), has been selected All-Sun Belt Conference football Second Team for the 2008 college football season.
