Remember when the Cowboys traded a 3rd round pick for Drew Henson?

I do and there were many fans who thought he had the potential to be the next great QB.

That didn't age well and is a cautionary tale to set realistic expectations for the Lance trade. I'm glad we made the move and took a chance with limited risk on a young talent, but there's a lot of devolpment ahead. We should all hope he can develop becauase that means the Cowboys added value.

The latest trade got me thinking about Henson with what went wrong there and how the Cowboys can help Lance with a more succesful development?

Henson was never cut out to be an NFL quarterback. When he made his starting debut on Thanksgiving Day 2004 his own teammates said he had a "deer in the headlights" look on his face and couldn't even say the play call in the huddle. He was so bad the Cowboys pulled him and were forced to play an injured Vinny Testaverde the rest of the game.

Lance is raw, but at least he's not going to play scared. That's one thing going for him.

The anointing Oil was out before Drew Henson threw a pass..... There were even thoughts of giving the guy No.8 jersey till Parcells scrapped that merchandising ploy.... :lmao: :lmao:

Did they trade for him to be QB3 or to possibly start some day?

Jerry don't trade draft picks for QB3.
No, but the Texans did!!! Another sign you are "johnny come lately" Cowboy fan.:lmao:

I know you having fantasy that this is some novel thing Jerry Jones did with Trey Lance aka Skinny Dak:lmao:

The Cowboys gave the Houston Texans a third-round pick in 2005 in exchange for Henson.

Drew Henson got $3.5 Million guaranteed from Jerry Jones

They traded for him to develop and perhaps be the long term backup. More upside with him than Rush and Grier combined.

I know so many fans want to make this all about Dak, but it's really all about finding a guy the team can win with and not in spite of in case Dak gets hurt again.

This year yes it will all be about development and being a viable back up option. Next year, I'm not so sure. It really depends on where he is at.

One thing that went wrong with Henson was giving up football for several years for baseball. That set him back and stunted his development. He may never have panned out anyway had he went directly to football, but playing baseball first didn’t help him. Apparently baseball was his first love and when that didn’t work out he turned to football.

Which is another reason this was such a great trade. Lance is a true talent, if he can figure things out getting him for a 4th round pick will be robbery. If he doesn't figure it out, well, it was only a fourth round pick.

Drew Henson and Chad Hutchinson were a weird temporary obsessions with baseball flameouts.
The Cowboys were on a monster search for Troy's successor. Even though Carter flashed, unbeknownst to the fan base due to NFLPA laws we could never know the severity of Quincy's off field issues.

The fact that a QB with substance dependcy issues Quincy Carter could earn more confidence from Bill Parcells tells us how mediocre Chad and Drew practiced and prepared

Who is to say he can't be the next Romo? Romo wasn't ready, got some time to learn without pressure and was ready when called. We just don't know what happened. Lance surely will compete next year for #2 with Rush.

I agree. I am a Dak fan and I am excited about picking up Lance. Good teams never stop trying to improve the depth on their roster.

Henson was starting over Brady at Michigan. He was one of those great college two sports athletes that every coach loves.
