I propose we get Chris Boniol to start a new reality show:

"So You Think You Can Kick"

"The Real Place Kickers of Jersey Shore"

"Survivor: Kickers Edition"

I mean, geez, we gotta do something!

Akers clearly still has a very good leg. As for Bailey he blew an easy kick but I got to hand it too him when the chips were down he was able to block out the bad kick and take care of business with a 48 yarder to tie the game. He has a lot more kicks to make before many of us will feel comfortable but yesterday was a good 1st step

Props to Bailey for making the 48 and 19 yarders. I wasn't confident at the end because a chip shot is not a guarantee, but he came through. That's big for a kicker. It just might propel him into consistent accuracy. Let's hope.

I felt he would make it. I'm not excusing the opening kick Bailey missed but I will give him credit for stepping up with 2 sec on the clock and putting the ball right down the middle. That was a big pressure kick on his part espeically after the poor kick he had at the start.

As for Akers great kick I saw it as well. However he is not on the team and is not a big concern for me. Bailey is and I hope this big kick will be a confidence boost to him. The guy was the top college kicker last year winning the Lou Groza award so he has ability to do the job

But he did make them and I'll give him his due props for that.

...Bailey's PHYSICAL make up was interesting on the 19 yard game winner: he was loose as a jelly fish, you could see it. As for the 21 yard mis-hit I have no excuses or explanantion, nor does he: just missed it. 48 yarder was perfect and would've been good from 55.....as Hos says....I hate kickers

....BTW: to answer the OP's original question: MONEY.....Jerrah and the boys always think they are the smartest kids in class and don't have to pay big money for a kicker as they never really have before. Not the smartest thing IMO....but then neither is carrying TWO kickers on the roster

because we got burned by Mike Vanderjct a couple of years ago and Jerry vowed to NEVER invest in a kicker like that again. Funny thing is...here the 49ers....a team with ZERO chance at a Super Bowl this year...and they have him...and we have ??? Don't know how ANY team that thinks they can compete for a Super Bowl would come into a season with ??? at Kicker can be taken seriously.

Akers was not good last year. Lets face it, he's only superman when he kicks against the Cowboys. So signing him would probably have done nothing.

It was money. Jerry didn't want to pay big for a kicker. We were pretty conservative all the way around in the free agent market.

Jerry said he was here for the touchbacks, yet he's 5/10 on those. In comparison, Billy Cundiff is 7/10. There's about 7 other guys doing it more frequently than Buehler. Seems like a weak "specialist" to me.

I remember very clearly those turning their nose up to Akers' 82.1 career FG%.

You may want to look at the kickers who were on the team when Jimmy was coaching, did not seem to put a bit emphasis on kickers back then either but we managed.
