Who ever suggest Pepper Johnson and Ratliff our 3-4 NTs, I have to say that they are much to small to play that position. If you ask me, I've always thought that Parcells made Ferguson lose way too much weight.

If you are concerned about conditioning, then get 2 or 3 fat NTs, and rotate them on every other play. But HUGE is the key at the NT position in the 3-4. Just ask the number 1 defense in stopping the run, San Diego chargers.

Nope...I've played as well...you under estimate the NT!

With out two legit cloggers your LB's can not roam...the sepnd their time fighting OG's....

In your defense I sure hope Fergy does not go down...season would be over.

I think something that YOU are missing is that Dallas doesn't play 3-4 exclusively...at least not yet. Their defense is/has been sort of a hybrid that may be somewhat of a harbinger of schemes to come for others as well. It's hard enough to game plan versus one style of defense, let alone two (more with nickel/dime packages). I don't think the guy is underestimating the NT slot, just saying that it'll probably be a day 2 thing. Incidentally, I don't know of ANY DLineman that plays every snap, so rotation is a given in any system, but true enough it is the standard in Dallas.

Portland, I agree that the position is important and also hope that Fergy doesn't go down. Just because Dallas gets a NT on the second day doesn't mean he is not capable of starting in this league. Jim Burt was undrafted in 1981 and was solid for the Giants making the Pro Bowl once in 1986. Jason Ferguson was a late round draft pick by the Jets in 1997 and has been a solid starter since even getting a big payday out of our beloved franchise. Those are two examples of Coach Parcells NT's that were/are standouts and were not 1st day picks. I trust Parcells judgment in picking a solid performer at that position on Day 2 of the draft. Look at his track record. I think he knows his system better than both of us.

Another example of a 2nd day pick being pretty good is Leon Lett from tiny Emphoria St. DT's can be had anywhere in the draft.

You mean like Glover hehe Spears can rotate in as well NT is not a need we have quite a bit of depth there.

I think where I'm coming from is that I don't think there are many legit NT's in this years draft. BP does have a nice history of landing NT's in lower rounds...Fergy is the perfect example. This year...there are not many to choose from beyond Ngata and Watson...there are other names being thrown around like Fifita...etc. I've wathced him play...nothing to get excited about.

I think enough about the position to want Watson or Ngata...Fergy is good, but not a dominant NT. IF we get a dominant NT...the LB's can be outstanding on this team...JMO.

I understand this fully...thus the reason Ellis is still here. Not only that...it's called a nickle defense.

It would be stupid to run 3-4 100%...we'd not be succesful if we did that. However in each defense you need a NT type. In the 4-3...you need a ST that takes on two blockers to give your DE's one on one...

More importantly in the 3-4...you need a rotation at NT...ever tries to take on two olineman for 30+ plays a game...must have TWO!

Fouth and one...put two NT hands down in the middle....you must have two legit NT's in this style defense...period!

Just because Fegry is starting won't preclude us from taking a NT early. Fergy is no spring chicken and you build championship teams with quality youth and depth. The youth issue is self explanatory, but I would love to see a 5-7th rounder legitimately beat Fergy out for the position, eventually. I say legitimately inferring that the kid just ends up better, not from Fergy taking a major plunge. It would be nice to plug that hole with low round contract.

I don't think Gabe Watson should be written off just yet. Dallas spent a lot of time with him. He could be a monster, if motivated.

Our 4-3 package is not our nickle. Two different animals. They are/were used interchangibly on more than passing/third downs.
I really don't get why you are saying what I've bolded anyway. I know what a nickel PACKAGE is.
