Report: Cowboys out on Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu
The Cowboys are out on the two best safeties on the market

Earl Thomas has been the apple of Dallas Cowboys' fans eye ever since he told Jason Garrett that he wanted to play for the team last season. With a gaping hole at safety, the team was expected to take a run arguably the NFL's best safety, and when Tyrann Mathieu hit the free agent market on Wednesday, the team was suddenly given an excellent consolation prize.

But according to Jane Slater of NFL Network, the Cowboys are out on both Thomas and Mathieu. She reports that the price tag is just too high on both of them, particularly Thomas, who would require not only a large financial commitment, but compensation for the Seattle Seahawks in a trade as well. They may have released Richard Sherman and traded Michael Bennett for scraps, but Thomas still holds quite a bit of trade value and the Seahawks are right for wanting to maximize it.

This report will be incredibly disappointing for Cowboys fans, who now have to live with the reality that the team not only missed out on the best players at its two biggest positions of need in safety and wide receiver, but lost its best internal free agent in Anthony Hitchens as well. There is now practically no chance that the Cowboys are a better team on paper next season than they were in 2017.

That doesn't mean they'll have a worse season. Circumstances like injuries, player development and overall luck will have a huge role in determining how far the Cowboys go. But this was a flawed roster that needed help, veteran help, and it now appears that help isn't coming. The Cowboys will have to find it on the fringes of free agency rather than getting the sort of difference makers they seemed to need

Shocking that they would cost money.

We will just roll with table scraps then...much better option.

Obviously we have successfully filled this hole in the center of our defense for the last decade so why take either of these two solutions...lol

Saw that coming. Considering the emphasis on safety and the fact the draft is in Dallas. I smell a trade up for Derwin coming. Imagine if we didn't win a meaningless game in Philly? We could have actually just had James and not had to give up anything. But hey. Moral victories right?

Winning that first preseason game of 2018 will give some Dallas fanboy pleasure when arguing with a Philly fanboy by quoting the all time series record. That game has meaning in those arguments, especially now that the "you have an empty trophy case" ammunition has been taken away.

Curious if you had your choice which of the following would you prefer ?

Earl Thomas
Tyrann Mathieu
Derwin James

I think with me personally I would almost rather have James because for 4 years plus a 5th Year Option
your not paying the guy 12 Million a year like Thomas and Mathieu might get. Lets not forget Vaccaro.

I hear what you're saying and all things being equal it makes sense, but I'd rather have a stud safety and STILL have my 1st round pick to grab a top WR or LB or even pass rusher.

We need to eventually resign Martin and Lawrence. DAK could be deserving of a big contract in the near future. Irving could be in the same boat.

The sky is not on fire. We have done a very good job drafting the past couple years. We have 10 picks right now.

Winning that game meant more to Jason and jerry so they can say the had back to back winning season. So things are looking up. As opposed to being their regular 8-8 and to get a better player that will could be a real impact.
Not that we couldn't get that player at 19, but 16 sure sounds a lot better. Even better to move up to around 12th.

That game was to take a little heat off of the media to really go after headlines that Jason should be fired. But a 9-7 record, who can say fire a coach with a winning record. But then again the titans fired their coach after a playoff loss. Something Jerry would never do, but should have.

Thomas I feel like he can play for awhile since he is a heads up player similar to a charles woodson who just knows his position better than pure athleticism

Mathieu is good but I worry his body will break down before he and his team are ready for it/expect it

James is a gamble who might be great or might be a bust with the latter being strong

Earl Thomas & Vita Vea
or
Suh & Derwin

I'm fine with either combination.
