Which would cost at least a 2nd rounder and maybe some more picks.

Trading up would be a mistake for a team that apparently will sit out FA and needs the draft to fill multiple holes. If we were, say one FS, from being elite, sure. But we have issues at LG, backup OT, WR, DE, DT, LB and S.

Trading away your top picks would be silly.
Just as silly as not using FA/trades to build your team.....hmmmm.

I agree with FO here ......Way too many needs for what Thomas would cost. From what I've read, as many 5 teams are bidding for Mathieu......heck Eric Reid is a nice fallback option. Funny thing, no one ever said they had to go for cream at the top (LOL). Just sign a couple MID-LEVEL players and most will be happy.........

Come on MODS! This is a very misleading thread... Jane Slater never said we were out on Earl Thomas, she just made a statement that her source said as of now, the asking price is too rich, a 1st round pick and the extension Thomas wants... No where did she say talks were completely dead, this is part of negotiations, they set the price high and we try to negotiate it to a good fair deal for both teams..

Which is why I think you'll see just that. Sit out FA, trade away top picks for a FS, then fill in the roster with crud and the front office will think they did a swell job.

No I have got it, everyone is mad Dallas did not leverage guys like Lawrence and Martin's future for guys they wanted. Now I can see all the angst. I would be all on board for signing these guys to reasonable offers. Who would be on board with giving a 2nd this year plus a 12.5mm AAV to ET. or 3-4 year deal to Honey Badger worth 12 mm AAV, or Suh a 15mm AAV contract and lets say foregoing Tank or Martin next year.

I'd be on board with all three of those because I believe that would be good market value, but it's silly to believe that signing them would jeopardize Lawrence or Martin's contract. We would simply continue to do what we do and set up automatic restructures that would open up funds for those.

When we're looking at those kinds of averages per year, we've also got to remember that they won't receive that kind of money each year. For example, we gave Dez a five-year, $70 million deal ($14 million average), and he received $17 million total his first two years (no restructure). Travis Frederick, whose 6-year, $56 million contract averages $9.4 million per year, received $6.5 million total his first two years and will receive $5.8 million this year.

In other words, we could have all three of those players and not pay them more than $20 million total each of their first couple of years. Excusing not signing them because we want to retain our own guys just plays into what the Joneses are doing. Smart shopping is not equal to cheap shopping.

They won't touch Reid with a 50 foot poll because he was a protester. Jerry won't tolerate that kind of behavior.

Another reason why our GM isn't very good at his job.

This was reported last night. And of course they are out while the asking price is a 1st rd pick. It doesn’t mean the negotiations are done. If Seattle won’t come off a 1st rd pick, he will be a Seachicken next year. Plain and simple.

You know we still have safeties on our team. It’s not like we have none. They can and will get better this year. And our corners will be healthy (finally) and better.

No guarantee anyone stays healthy. We always seem to have health issues.

That's silly.......just talk with the kid and see where his head is. He may have no intention of future protest......

We will draft one and pick up a vet down the road. If no one signs these guys there price will get cheaper. Injuries are gonna happen. Hopefully the injury bug stays clear this year.

No chance “on paper” to be a better team because they didn’t trade for, or sign a safety? When free agency just started and with the draft yet to come?

Good Lord. Talk about panicking.

This reads like the writer is trying to rile up Cowboy fans.

Everything at this time of year is posturing, no one really knows the negotiations and the NFL network is reporting what a GM or agent feed them to help their own bargaining position.

"Cowboys out on Thomas" could very easily mean "Seattle hasn't lowered their trade demands yet". And its a certainty that the price will come down the closer we get to the draft.

Didn’t they come to some agreement to not do that anymore or something? Can’t remember.

It’s extremely frustrating that our team is run by incompetent people.

Perhaps one day we will have a real football front office.

Jerry would never touch a player that took a knee, except.... you know... for the time Jerry took a knee with the entire team. Silliness.
