Citing a Bucs team source, the NY Daily News is "hearing" that Jon Gruden could be headed to Notre Dame to replace Charlie Weis.

Reporter Rich Cimini admits it seems "a little far fetched," but says there's a theory that Notre Dame will buy out Weis' contract after his recruiting class signs in 1-2 weeks. Weis was nearly fired this past season. Gruden went to high school in South Bend and has long had an affinity for the university he nearly attended. Still, he'd be a risky hire for the Irish. Gruden is passionate about the NFL and hasn't worked the college game in nearly 20 years. Jan. 18 - 10:02 pm et

I wouldn't put much into this "report/rumor".... Gruden is no better than Weiss really, bottom line is Notre Dame is a tough place to recruit top talent because of the academic requirements placed on the students.

Charlie already blew that theory out of the water. Even after last years disaster they got a top 5 recruiting class. You have to work harder then OSU and Texas and company, but you can get the talent to go to ND. Now Charlie just has to show that he can develope the O and D lines as well as QBs and WRs.
The University has already committed to giving Charlie one last chance so there will be no change now.

Talent is not ND's problem. They have had plenty of talent come in to that school.

WOW, anyone that says talent isn't a problem doesn't watch that team! They have NO speed whatsoever: NONE. I don't care how highly rated their players supposedly are guys. If you know anything about recruiting services you know they suck up to ND. They'll give a kid with 2 star talent a 4 star rating because he's going to ND. Especially Tom Lemming: he's a schill for ND. They don't have very good talent and they don't have a very good coach.

Then why is there also a "rumor" that Tony Rice, among others, read at a 5th grade level? The academic requirement story is bull.

They do now. They just strated getting on the field this year. Weis has had top five recruiting classes for the last three years. That's why there were so many freshmen and sophmores on the field this year. The seniors were from Willingham's 32nd ranked recruiting class five years ago (redshirts) and most of the juniors were recruited late by Weis when he was hired. In short, the big guns will be coming into their own this coming season as juniors and sophmores. Weis can be judged from this year forward.

From what I have seen, I think they will be a top 10 team in 2009.

They could be a top 10 team because of their weak schedule and the name recognition. They will then get blown out when they face a top opponent in a bowl game.

I don't see much talent when I watch ND play. Used to be I would see talented players on the field for the Irish. The big, fast athletic types. I don't see that as much any more.

I agree...

Honestly I couldnt see much difference in their guys and the academy players when they were all on the field at the same time.

And they keep getting props for great recruiting classes, yet almost none of it pans out.

ND can't afford to buy out Weiss option. He'll get another year to prove himself, and I think he'll make good on it. Clausen is becoming a pretty good QB, and the talent is starting to improve. They have an easy schedual, so i wouldn't be surprised if they win 8-9 games.

I'm not sure I understand what all the Gruden love is about. He won a SB that should have been Dungy's, and for a supposed offensive genius his teams in Tampa were never impressive offensively. You can blame the QBs, but it was Gruden who was bringing them in.

Doubt it. ND, you and it's fans overrate the talent or 'big guns' as you like to call it. Weis has won one big game since he has been at ND and that was at then number 2 Michigan, who turned out not to be so good that year. They had that close game to USC and ever since then nothing. They had a weak schedule this year and did nothing with it. ND people need to stop making excuses for Weis. He isn't a good HC.

You will this year. They are getting fast.

The schedule thing kills me. They played Michigan, Pudue, Michigan Stae, USC, UCLA, Boston College, Stanford, Navy, Washington, Pitt, Syracuse, and North Carolina. That was their schedule. Navy is a life time contract. The rest of the teams on that schedule are major college programs. You don't see Western Kentucky, Buffalo, the Citadel, Houston, Eastern Illinois, Central Florida or any other directional schools. In contrast, most other ranked teams have two or three of these teams on their schedule which they purposely schedule to assure easy wins. Notre Dame only plays major colleges and Navy. While some of them are down right now (Michigan, UCLA), the schedules are made years ahead of time. Then you play the games.

There is a misconception that Notre Dame has an easy schedule and sometimes it turns out that way, to no fault of theirs. Notre Dame plays the major schools and never attempts to soften their schedule, like other ranked teams do.

Why does the schedule thing kill you? I am not blaming them for making the schedule. Nor do I think ND chose the schedule to purposely get easy games. It is just a fact that a lot of those teams on the schedule were not that good this year and probably won't be that good next season. That is why it will be an easy schedule. In a few seasons it may not remain an easy schedule as some of those programs may improve. That is why Weiss better do something in 2009 because the schedule is likely to get more difficult as their opponents improve.

Many people act like Notre Dame has it easy by not being in a conference, when actually they play major college teams from several different conferences instead of just the teams in their conference and a handful of directional schools.

They did have it easy last season and still managed to lose what 6 games. So next year will be different because they are faster?

Because the freshmen and sophmores that made up the majority of there starting lineup, will now be juniors and sophmores. Can you find me a major college team that starts majority sophmores and freshmen, and win more than 6 games? They got experience this year. It will show. It started to show in the Hawii game.

What happened to the juniors? Weiss has been there 4 seasons. That means he has had 3 true recruiting classes since his first season was really Willingham's recruiting class in 2005. The 2006 class should be juniors this season and ND rarely red shirts players. Was that just a wasted class?
