Rumors are they will have always online DRM.

If that is the case they are going to anger a bunch of people, and you can count on me buying a PS4 over Xbox 720 or whatever they call it.

Better graphics? I've been wondering for sometime how they'll make these consoles better.

Forgive me for my lack of tech knowledge but what is an always online DRM and why would this anger people?

I'm just curious because I know that I won't be buying either one of them any time soon after they come out. I've only had my XBox 360 for just under 3 years now and I don't see any real reason to change anytime in the foreseeable future.

Basically it means you have to be online in order for the games to run, so if you don't have the internet, or if it goes out or isn't stable, you're SOL. It's a method to combat piracy.

Have to have it hooked to the internet to play any of your games

Yes I will not buy one ever if that is the case.

It is basically your specific console and the specific I.D. of the game being in constant communication with the game makers and or console company's server. That allows them to have data monitoring which can be used to make sure it is not either hacked/pirated or even a rental(different game than what you own) being played. This completely destroys the rental gaming industry. Also you could not just play your friend's game in your console, ever.

The newest Sim City game released for PC (and a few other PC games) were set this way where you had to log in to the EA server to play. It ended up a complete mess because the EA servers were down when it launched, and people have unstable internet connections, so there were a lot of complaints. The game was basically unplayable.

Microsoft should learn from this.

This is a preview of a next gen engine.

You will see better graphics, and more dynamic gameplay basically. Not just graphics, but physics engines and things of that sort. Companies have been toning down console games for years now compared to PC. Some PC games out currently are already incredible compared to 360 or PS3 and that will only get better.

Thanks for the information.

That's an even worse deal then what I'd heard they were going to do. I'd been hearing, prior to the unviel of the PS4, that they were going to start requiring all games to have those online codes, like Battlefield and Madden already have, that would only be available through the purchase of a brand new game. I'd heard that without the code it would be much like now on Madden or Battlefield I guess that if you didn't have the online code then you couldn't play online. So basically if you bought a used game or rented one you could only play the single player.

I guess that was to cut out the sale of used games and game rentals but this sounds like they're going to go even a step further and not only cut out the used games, and rentals, but also folks who don't play online anyway. Seems like a really bad move to me.

I play games like that called MMO's but I also play games not on the network. I like flexibility of choosing and I can on a PC. Some games I am fine with but I know that when I buy that game but I also buy games that do not for a reason.

I have a 360 but there are several reasons why I much prefer PC games: much faster loading times, modding games which brings new life to games already played, and, of course, better graphics. I originally bought the XBox for Mass Effect which originally came out on the XBox first.

If this new XBox can match or exceed my PC then I may go for it which would not require me to spend so much on a PC. However, I'm really a hardware guy at heart so not having the latest PC would be tough on my pride. :)

I'm skeptical of the "always on" stuff.

It sounds like a horrible idea for the company because they'd basically take a hit in sales for anyone who doesn't have a reliable connection.

Could also count out anyone who accesses the internet at their dorm, or through their apartment complex, or all sorts of other situations where the ISP moderates what can actually access the web. What do you do if you live out in the sticks and the only thing available just won't cut it?

It's a horrible idea and I think the recent talk has been more of an opinion sampling than anything.

Odds are they are having discussions about whether or not they could actually do it and so they throw some bits and pieces out there to see what the community would think of it.

I doubt it makes it. I'd be shocked actually. I know tons of people who don't even care to use XBOX Live but still play the games. They just play the campaigns and stuff.

Exactly, but with always online you will have to be connected even if you are playing a single player game. If your connection goes out or you are traveling somewhere then you wont be able to play. Sim City launch was an absolute disaster. There servers were crashing constantly, and people were only aloud to play for 30 minutes at a time before they would get kicked off.
