I said some pretty harsh things yesterday about the journalism industry and painted a lot of folks with a pretty broad brush.

While I still think these Cowboy's stories stink to high-heaven, I should have never painted the reporters here and everywhere with the same brush.

I would like to apologize to them now. Tyke- and Shake and anyone else- I apologize.

I know this is OT, but maybe the guys involved will see it before the mods delete it.

the mods are busy breaking their own rules

they won't remove this one

just kidding modsquad

You're a big man. I left the business years ago... the reporting I do now is more market discovery, and I get paid for my analysis. Journalism has had some high profile black eyes. In some cases, it has deserved every bit of the criticism thrown its way. But there are some great, hard-working people in the profession.

The truth is, from time to time, we all "hate" the press. Many times, in my case, it's been because I didn't like what I was reading, didn't want to believe it. Some times, despite that, it turned out to be true.

Again, you are a big man, sir.

5countem5 made this thread to apologize because Tim Tebow told him to.

Tim Tebow took Chuck Norris' Tonka toy, and all Chuck could do was cry.

I think if anyone gets their feelings hurt because of another persons opinion of their profession, they need to grow up and not let other peoples words effect them so emotionally.

And I am a journalist major who writes for hawkeyesports.com

No argument there, but if you take that major to the real world you better be prepared to stand up and defend your work. Do anything of substance, and you will be challenged. If you're tough enough, you'll make it.

I'm a firm believer that words don't have any power unless you let them but often forget not everyone feels that way.

It's all good, 5Countem5.

I don't take things/comments personally. You have your opinions, and you're entitled to them. I don't want you to stop sharing them because our differences are what makes this board special.

I think all professions have people who don't represent them well, journalism is no exception.

You still kewl peeps with me. :)

I agree. I attended a Newsweek seminar several years ago at which a Newsweek editor critiqued some of my writings/articles. I had written one about interracial marriages/dating in the South. And the editor told me I needed to "editorialize" more in my writing. I felt uncomfortable doing so because that violated everything I was taught about writing (I'm a reporter not a columnists though I have/had written editorial pieces from time to time).

But that was nearly 10 years ago, and the business was moving more towards "interpretative/opinionated" journalism even in regular news reporting.

I think that tendency is more prevalent in today's writing. I'd rather leave my opinions out of a story, personally. I just like to present the facts and both sides of the story and let the reader decide.

A long, long time ago (I remember Mike Gaechter), a young reporter came to me with a story idea. He knew some guys who were involved in cockfighting and could do a piece if I would give him the go-ahead. I said, "Sure. Sounds great. But you be careful."

Anyhow, he came to me with a long, expansive piece slugged "Cockfighting is enjoyed." It wasn't quite what I had in mind.

Everyone interprets situations a little differently, I suppose.

Yeah, I know. Frightening on more than one level. Actually, I rewrote the thing. Took me two hours. I even made a few phone calls. When I was done, the headline was "Cockfighting: Bloodsport."
