I would do this.....google top rated restaurants in austin.....or google local favorite restaurants in austin.

I have never eaten at a restaurant in austin, so that is the only advice I can give. I used to watch the augie garrido show on LHN, where he would visit different austin eateries, but I don't recall any names.

Franklin's is great food but not sure it's worth standing in line for hours in the heat
Salt lick is above average to good food, BYOB, and family style. If going, go to driftwood not round rock location.

Local Austin spots
Kerby Lane - good breakfast, multiple locations
Stanley Farmhouse pizza - only open weekends - Jester King brewery next to it
Jack Allen's Kitchen- great happy hour...chicken fried beef ribs
Easy Tiger - bakery and beer garden
Ramen Tatsu-yu - love this place!!
Noble sandwich company

Jack Allen's Kitchen
Round Rock Donuts
Tyson's Tacos
Franklin BBQ/LA BBQ (food trucks), Salt Lick (traditional restaurant)
Homeslice Pizza (great location on South Congress for people watching)
Juan in a Million
Other food trucks: Via 313, Way South of Philly (best cheesesteak), Evil Wiener, Gourdough's
Vince Young's Steakhouse

Via 313 has brick and mortar at Y now...good pizza
Gourdoughs has full bar and restaurant on S. Lamar - menu built around donuts
Pinthouse - pizza and large beer selection
Perlas - expensive but great selection of oysters
Deckhands seafood - well priced and really good food. Try salt and pepper Caliimari...not on menu

I didn't know that about Gourdoughs and Via 313. Seems like some of the more popular food trucks are opening traditional restaurants.

Pinthouse was one of my favorite hangout spots in college. Definitely should be on the list. I've never been to Deckhand but I've heard it's amazing from friends.

Have you been to Jack Allen's seafood restaurant - Salt Traders Coastal Kitchen? I heard it's really good too.

Galaxy cafe (in the triangle)
The oasis, highly recommend to go on a Sunday because they have live salsa music and good food with a great view over lake Travis
Hula hut (off lake Austin blvd)
Mozarts for coffee and pastries. (it's next to hula hut)
Summer moon for coffee, hand pies, and other speciality foods
Home slice off s.congress
Amy's ice cream
Phils ice house
Top notch burgers (featured in the film dazed and confused)
Dan's hamburgers (austin's version of whataburger)
Magnolia cafe (austins version of IHOP, highly recommend their "landscape" meals)

I'd avoid the food trucks on s. Congress. Most are very mediocre and expensive.

Don't automatically cross out bouldin or mother's because they are vegan/vegetarian restaurants. Both have amazing tasting food that is filling. This coming from a man who is very active and lifts/runs 5-6 days a week.
