I decided to review the list of players that @morasp posted as 1tech possibilities.
  • Jordan Davis 6.5 12 overall
  • Travis Jones 6.28 53 overall
  • Phidarian Mathis 6.27 57 overall
  • Matthew Butler 6.2 83 overall
  • Eyioma Uwazurike 6.18 95 overall
  • John Ridgeway 6.10 134 overall
  • Neil Farrell 6.0 142 overall
I like to review game footage of players before I read the draft reports or see the measurables.
- The only 2 that I had seen previously were Davis and Jones.
- I'm removing Matthew Butler because he is not a 1-tech type at 297 pounds.
  • I'll start with the summary:
    • Jordan Davis: Will get over-drafted due to measurables. Lazy at times.
    • Travis Jones: Terrific player. Seems unlikely to be available at #56.
    • Phidarian Mathis: Would be a good 3rd round pick. Had 9 sacks.
    • Eyioma Uwazurike. Hardest to evaluate. Had 9 sacks. Many 'almost' plays.
    • John Ridgeway: Looks like an OLineman. Struggled vs Georgia.
    • Neil Farrell: Very strong and moves better than terrible measurables would indicate.
  • Jordan Davis 6.5 12 overall
    • Dontari Poe clone.
    • Looks like Tarzan (Tarzan on steroids), plays like Jane (If Jane was fat and lazy).
    • Note: Watch full game footage (ex. Georgia vs Alabama) not highlight videos.
    • Obvious wow physical ability (4.78 forty @341 pounds).
      • However, only glimpses of that show up in game footage.
    • Did not play a high percentage of snaps in the games that I reviewed.
    • Often just content to lean on blockers and then quits if the ball goes away from him.
    • Like Poe, he'll have some good games and maybe a good season here and there.
    • Unlikely to live up to his draft status for the duration of his rookie contract.
    • It's fun to how freak athletes on the roster for fans to dream about their upside, but...
      • If measurables defined a player then Bruce Carter should have been Micah Parsons.
  • Travis Jones 6.28 53 overall
    • I think everyone is aware of this player.
    • Maybe the strongest upper body of anybody on the list.
    • The angle/wham blocks that Georgia used vs Ridgeway didn't work vs Jones.
    • He likes to use a 1-arm extension move where he bench presses OL with 1 arm.
    • He overwhelmed many of the OL at the Senior Bowl 1-on-1 drills.
    • He has some pass rush moves and can cross the face of OGs to jump into a gap.
    • Might never have many sacks, but will keep QBs from stepping up in the pocket.
    • Nice athletic ability for his size. Better 3-cone & shuttle than the 3 players that weighed less.
    • Safest player on this list. He'll be a solid run stopper at a minimum.
    • If he keeps his weight down, he might have Chris Jones type upside.
  • Phidarian Mathis 6.27 57 overall
    • High Effort Player. I really like his on-field demeanor.
    • Didn't run at combine due to 'coming off back injury' but he didn't miss any games.
    • Not as overwhelmingly powerful as some on this list, but offers more as a pass rusher.
    • He had 9 sacks in 2021 in the SEC.
    • Sub-par Vert but maybe due to back issue.
    • His game footage shows a 3-tech or 1-tech type and sacks back that up.
    • Appears a step quicker than Uwazurike in edge contain type movements.
  • Eyioma Uwazurike 6.18 95 overall
    • The most difficult to evaluate.
    • Sometimes looked more athletic than some others on this list.
    • Other times showed lumbering movements.
    • I think maybe fatigue was the reason for the inconsistencies.
    • Played the majority of snaps that I saw as DE in a 3-man DL.
    • He did play some snaps at NT, but those were limited.
    • Occasionally showed a decent edge rush for his size.
    • More often a QB or RB was inches away and he couldn't seal the edge.
    • Off the snap CoD decent but struggled with change of direction if running in the open field.
    • Had 9 sacks in 2021. Tied with Mathis for most TFL and Sacks on this list of players.
  • John Ridgeway 6.10 134 overall
    • Big lower body.
    • John Madden would have loved this player with his large posterior.
    • Decent arm length.
    • He is a 2-gap player that tends to wait for the ball carrier and then tosses his blocker aside.
    • Didn't see him bull-rush as much as some other big DTs.
    • Georgia came in with a plan against him and he struggled.
    • They would wham block him with a delayed block by a 2nd OLineman from the side.
    • At times an OL would side-step him then the next OL would slam into him from the side.
    • Might make a really good OLineman.
  • Neil Farrell 6.0 142 overall
    • Game footage looks terrific.
    • Combine numbers were beyond terrible.
    • Despite measurables, he has a ease of movement in the open field.
    • He was often the primary defender chasing the QB around the pocket.
    • I really like this player as a run stopper despite poor measurables.
    • Much better run stopper in college than Bohanna.

Davis has freak measurables.
4.78 forty & 1.53 ten yard split at 341 pounds.
Bypasses the other by over a foot in the broad jump.
Least impressive stats of the group.

Travis Jones
Too bad he didn't do the bench. He looks very strong on the field.
4.92 forty at 325 pounds is in the freakish category.
Best 3-cone and shuttle times of the players on this list that participated in those drills.

Phidarian Mathis
Excellent length but high-cut (high center of gravity).
Sub-par vert and shuttle but coming off of a back injury (Although he didn't miss any games).
Best game stats of the group.

Eyioma Uwazurike
Longest arms, biggest wingspan.
Best vert of this group.
2nd best game stats.

John Ridgeway
OK measurables but nothing stands out.

Neil Farrell
Ugly measurables; although, 10 yard time same as Travis Jones.
3rd on this list in TFL and total tackles.

I think Travis Jones is a 1st rd talent and a dark horse at pick #24. He isn’t just a run player and even can play a little at the 3T

Think you’re a little harsh on Davis. That Georgia D was incredible and Davis was a gigantic part of…regardless of whether he directly made plays or not. Georgia’s 3 LB’s who will all be drafted would tell you that I’m sure.

I agree that Davis shouldn’t be getting top 10 consideration, but I could justify taking him anywhere behind 14 in this draft class.

Also a big of of Jones. And if you want to argue there shouldn’t be as big of a gap between Davis and Jones as most rankings have…I would agree.

Mathis is a good prospect, but I’m not sure he profiles as a 1 tech in the traditional sense. Don’t think you draft him and think your run D will be significantly improved.

Farrell is pretty good, but nothing special. He might end up being the best value

Don’t really have interest in any of the others.

Ogbonnia from UCLA is pretty interesting. 6’4 324 with 34 3/8” arms. Shows flashes of quickness and power. But he needs a lot of technique work…he consistently plays with bad level and let’s olineman get leverage and move him off the spot. IF that could be fixed he could be a late round steal

Any one of them would help. Jones would be the best in my view. Too bad he is moving up the boards.

It's a bit unclear where you think some of these guys may come off the board.

We aren't getting anyone better than someone to compete with Bohanna. One of those 5th rounders is probably a reasonable expectation.

Which fall into that category?

I don't have access to snaps played for college players, but Davis didn't seem to play a high percentage.
- Devonte Wyatt looked like the better player in most of the games that I reviewed.
- Davis, like Dontari Poe, will make plays in the NFL, but I just see a similar lack of really living up to his draft status.

I pulled up some Otito Ogbonnia games.
- Better length than Farrell but Farrell has much more impressive game footage.
- Ogbonnia seems to have more ability than shows up in college game footage based on occasional flashes.
- In the NFL he might have more success keeping his weight on the lower end of the range.
- His biggest flaw is lack of balance. He is on the ground too often.
- One of the top traits of Travis Jones is his balance. Jones maintains his footing even when big OGs slam into him from the side.

Phidarian Mathis wouldn't be a 3-4 NT type but has 4-man DL 1-tech type ability as well as 3-tech or possibly 5-tech ability.

Eyioma Uwazurike, like Mathis, had 9 sacks. That's impressive, especially for DTs in consideration for 1-tech duties.

Travis Jones is the only 1 that really fits the bill of what fans constantly post about in terms of wanting a legit 1-tech DT that consistently goes power to power with interior OLinemen.

Which fall into that category?

Travis Jones: Early 2nd with possibility of late 1st. He is the 1tech that fans have wanted forever but has ability beyond just being a run plugger.

Mathis: Early 3rd. More power than anyone on the current Cowboys DL but not in the 3-4 NT category of super wide body. Could play a high percentage of snaps due to pass rush ability.

Neil Farrell: 5th at the earliest. Better college player than Bohanna.

Eyioma Uwazurike: Have no idea where he'll be drafted or where he should be drafted. Significant upside as a 4th or later pick but also has some awkwardness that is hard to explain.

Not the best source, but also don’t see why it would be wrong…but here’s Georgia’s snap counts. Doesn’t seem to be an abnormal snap count for a 330+ lb’er in my opinion

https://uga.rivals.com/news/snap-count-national-championship-2021-season

I think Davis is more powerful and plays nastier than Poe ever did. Davis will demand a consistent double team and can withhold and occupy it. I think Vita Vea is a closer comp. His college (or pro) production hardly jumps off the page, yet his impact on the game is always felt

Mathis isn't a 1 tech here at 310.

There are plenty of 1-tech DTs in that weight range.
- Big players often drop weight prior to the combine in order to run better.
- His playing weight was likely 315 to 320.

When Dan Quinn was in Seattle, their 1-tech was Brandon Mebane (6-1, 311).

With the Falcons, Quinn has Tyler Davidson (6-2, 309) as his 1-tech DT.

Saints #1 in Rush Yards/Carry allowed in 2021
Shy Tuttle (6-3, 300)
David Onyemata (6-4, 300)

Seahawks #2 in Rush Yards/Carry allowed in 2021
Poona Ford (5-11, 310)
Rasheem Green (6-4, 279)

The Patriots 2021 #2 Ranked Defense
Davon Godchaux: 6-3, 311
Lawrence Guy: 6-4, 315

The Super Bowl winning Rams starting NT is Greg Gaines (Listed at 6-1, 312).

Panthers #2 in total yards allowed in 2021.
DaQuan Jones (6-4, 320)
Derrick Brown ( 6-5, 320)

In 2020, the Steelers were the 3rd ranked defense with 3-4 NT Tyson Alualu (6-3, 304).

I think Davis is more powerful and plays nastier than Poe ever did. Davis will demand a consistent double team and can withhold and occupy it. I think Vita Vea is a closer comp. His college (or pro) production hardly jumps off the page, yet his impact on the game is always felt
Good find on the snap counts.

I had Vita Vea as a borderline top 10 DT.

Some team will likely draft Davis before #24 anyway. Poe was 11th overall despite question marks about effort.

Your all time favorite pundit Bryan Broaddus (ok don't stop reading) said that Dallas was interested in Davis even before the combine. If thats true, I think a guy like Jones could very well be on their radar

I refer to Broaddus as 'opposite guy'.

Believe the opposite of that he says.
