Bold - Not ideal play but appears to have played as coached.

Red - Fail.

  • Cut blocked. This play is difficult to evaluate. He could have jumped outside to avoid the block and possibly make the tackle, but I think he is coached to stay tight to the line and prevent the inside cutback. He did squeeze the outside gap but the outside defender was completely blocked out.
  • Run was to the other side.
  • Gets other players aligned. Threatens blitz. Avoids cut block, maintains gap responsibility, run is to opposite gap, gets in on tackle.
  • Avoids block by OL. Run is to opposite gap. Gets in position for tackle but primary defenders of that gap make the tackle.
  • Gets boxed out on a run for TD. Bad positioning on his part.
  • Very nice shed of block and gets in on tackle for loss.
  • On the line (right). Run goes to the other side. Pancakes Olineman.
  • Run to his side. Maintains gap responsibility then in on tackle for loss.
  • Aligns other players. Has shallow zone coverage in middle area. Pass is outside.
  • Plays off coverage right. Pass goes to the left.
  • Avoids block. In position to prevent inside cutback.
  • Zone coverage right. Pass goes left.
  • Avoids open field block on the left. Comes across field to make tackle on outside run to the right. Hammers the runner.
  • Middle coverage. Pass is incomplete deep left.
  • Does a nice job avoiding blocks as he comes from left to right across the field. Tackles the runner on run to the defensive right side.
  • Starts on the right. Avoids block and comes all the way across the field to the left sideline. Is in place for the tackle but CB on that side get there first.
  • Comes from right to left, avoids block, in position for stop but tackle for loss is made by LB on that side.
  • Comes from left to right. DL has hands on runner and Hitchens hammers runner driving him backwards.
  • Maintains gap responsibility. Involved in tackle.
  • Off coverage right. Comes across the field, gets into position for tackle on pass completed to the left but defender on that side make the tackle.
  • Comes from left to right to make solo tackle for no gain. Hammers the runner.
  • Triple team blocked. Other defender is unblocked but fails on tackle as runner scores TD from 15 yards out.
  • Comes from right to left, sheds block, in position for tackle but other defenders make tackle for minimal gain.
  • Zone coverage middle-left. Incomplete pass deep right.
  • Blocker appears to grab him, possibly by facemask. Run is to the opposite side.
  • Does good job initially of getting through traffic to hit runner at the line but fails to make the tackle.
  • Comes from right to left. Run is off tackle to the defensive left. Runner is slowed by other defender and then hammered by Hitchens.
  • Does not do a good job of avoiding block, but runner is tackled for loss by other defenders.
  • In coverage. QB is sacked by #20.
  • Does good job of avoiding block and maintaining gap responsibility. Runner bounces to opposite side. Hitchens loops back to other side to be in position by tackle if made by primary defenders on that side.
  • Maintains gap responsibility. Run is away from him.
  • This plays appears to be a big fail by Hitchens, but he actually played it correctly. He was being blocked by OL and had to play contain to one side of the block. He appears to have made the correct decision to play contain to the right. The runner goes left and #19 is there unblocked but can’t initially make the tackle.
  • Takes on block by FB and clogs up the middle. Runner bounces outside.

what's your overall impression X? I said when we took him he'd be solid....not a pro bowler but a very solid backup LB that will also contribute greatly on special teams. Better pick than most think.

I've watched all of his snaps from 4 games. I think he can play in the NFL. He plays assignment sound football. He is good against the run and moves well in coverage. It's difficult to make a detailed analysis of his coverage ability without the All-22, but it seems good.

He is more like Holloman and less like Carter (i.e. A solid football player instead of a freak athlete).

Seems like McClay wants more football players instead of the athletes. Can't say I disagree. I've seen the same X. What I like about him is that he's going to compete and make people earn their jobs. He isn't going to give up anything.

I don't disagree with wanting football players instead of athletes , but it has to be done within reason. One if the biggest problems on defense is the lack of speed. When they draft players, they should make sure that they are good athletes. There are too many players in this team that have borderline speed. I have used Church as an example before and I will again. Church is a player, but just think of how much better the defense would be if ayers like him had good speed. IIRC no was timed at 4.6 in the 40 before we drafted him. He has never been a fast CB. If I spend the 6th pick in the draft in a CB, he better have elite speed. The slower players are half a step behind at all times and that makes a weak defense even weaker. Speed should be at the top if the list of desirable traits that they look for in players. It worked well for the 90's Cowboy defenses.

That's what he said in his interview. They have some minimum standards for the measurables and after that it's the big three.

I agree. You want speed AND football players. You really need both. Athleticism without instincts and production means little. But you need speed esp in the back 7.

I don't think speed has been a priority as of late. I am not saying that they need to take the Al Davis route and put speed over their playing ability, but I want to see more speed , especially in the secondary and with the LBs. I want the team to concentrate on the fastest players at their positions. I think the team has taken a "fast enough" approach with players and it has created a team with just average speed. I hope that changes.

I believe that's why they were targeting Shazier in the 1st.
