I reviewed the 1st game that Parnell played in 2012. He replaced Tyron at LT in the 2nd quarter.

Parnell came in on the 1st play of the 1st series in the 2nd quarter. This was an overtime game; therefore, it was approximately the same a playing a full game.

My review:

Win: Quick throw to opposite side.
Win: Run, pancake.
Penalty on Cowboys
Draw: Blocks DE out, but Livings man stunts to the outside and get pressure.
Win: Pass rusher fakes outside, then trys inside rush.
Lose: Pass, loses contain after 2.5 seconds. Sack.
Win: Outside pass rush.
Win: Excellent. Eliminates DE, then picks up stunting DT.
Win: Blocks 2 defenders on run to the other side.
Win: Outside pass-rush.
Win: Pancakes pass-rusher.
Win: Pass. Gets initial help-block on Livings man and then back out to pick up delayed blitzer.
Win: Pass block.
Draw: Outside pass-rusher is starting to get loose after 2.5 seconds but pass is gone.
Win: Gets initial block and then ready for delayed outside blitzer, but quick pass is gone.
Win: Outside pass rush.
Win: Takes only 1 step back on attempted bull rush.
Win: Pass rush.
Win: Pancakes the defender.
Lose: Run. Pancakes the defender, but not before the play is disrupted.
Win: Pass. Inside-Out stunt attempt by defenders.
Win: Pass.
Draw: Loses block after 3 seconds.
Win: Run. Drives defender back about 4 yards.
Win: Pass.
Lose: Pass. Loses contain on outside pass rush after 2.5 seconds.
Win: Pass.
Win: Outside pass rush.
Win: Pass.

Win: Pass.
Win: Pass.
Lose: Pass. Only held block for 2.5 seconds. Pass was complete for a touchdown.

Draw: Pass. Livings appears to screw up the stunt by the defenders.
Lose: Run. Buried defender, but hesitation allowed defender to get in the way.
Win: Run. Takes defender to the ground.
Win: Run.
Win: Pass. Perfect in picking up the stunt.
Win: Pass.
Win: Pass. He does get pushed back a few steps but maintains the block.

I'm all for giving him a fair shot in the offseason to win the job. I am not supporting the thought of him going into the season as the only legitimate starting prospect at RT.

Good stuff, thanks.

Parnell played well according to the chart.

I actually have a lot of hope for Parnell. He's still learning the position.

The Cowboys have a lot of faith in him as well.

A lot of times you sound like a troll. Then sometimes you say stuff like this :)

What's it going to be then, eh?

To be honest, some of these wins I'd character as "no play" or a "loss".

I think it's a bit debatable what constitutes a win for the OL.

If his defender or zone did not influence the play as designed then the OL can be thought of as winning that matchup.

If the defender is just totally annihilated from a play then that is probably a plus block.

If the defender is just totally buried at the point of attack on a running play or if the OL managed to effectively block 2 players then that is a plus-plus block.

I would still view all these things as carrying out the assignment, though. I do believe that is how most OL are graded.

I am not sure how often an average OL completes his assignment. I suspect it is somewhere in the 85% range but I'm not sure.

BTW, thanks Xwalker for doing the analysis.

I seem to remember Parnell having a couple of shaky moments early but then seemed to pick up his play.

It is not surprising that he may have a bit of difficulty with his first real game action at any level as a LT without any warning.

I really suspect this guy will grow a ton if given a chance to play consistently. He clearly has the raw tools of a first round LT, we just don't have a Combine or Pro Day result to show it to everyone. He got good feet from playing basketball and then just had to learn the power aspects of OL play here in the NFL. He came in weak because he was a basketball player who weighed 245 pounds but now seems to have NFL upper body and core strength. You can't teach arm length but he has it. For a guy 6-7 he didn't seem to get bulled very much which means someone has done a lot of good work on his anchoring technique and use of leverage.

The lack of interest in Clabo we showed (wouldn't pay him $3.5M) suggests that Parnell is being put on the depth chart as first stringer for now. Any vet we go after will be looked upon as a 2nd stringer/swing tackle.

It'd be great if one of these worked out for us once. It did with Miles and Romo. But now we have failed recently with Allan Ball and Bill Nagy so everyone has gotten skeptical of low pedigree players who are annointed as starters. However, I will say that Church looked like the real deal at Safety before he tore his Achilles. I also think Parnell played well enough last year to have earned the right to compete for the starting job this year although it'd be nice if there were a viable backup on the roster (?Weems).

Thanks for doing this xwalker.

By the way, it looks like getting a subscription to Game Rewind now means you have to pay the full year fee but only get the service until Sept 1 (or whenever the new season starts). Is that pretty much the option for getting access to the coaches film?

I try to grade only on the blocking and not on the play result.

If the OL was beaten but the DL didn't affect the play, I still give the OL a "lose" on the play.

If the OL was beaten but held the block for about 3 seconds, then I give him a "draw".

It appears that you can get it for $24.99 now but it is only good through the end of July. The cost for a full year (last year) was $69.99.

Great post.. I like Parnell a lot..

I think once he gets more experience and especially when he gets more confidence I think he can be a good player

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll pay in August for the new season.
