I try to grade only on the blocking and not on the play result.

If the OL was beaten but the DL didn't affect the play, I still give the OL a "lose" on the play.

If the OL was beaten but held the block for about 3 seconds, then I give him a "draw".

I think that's a fair assessment. I would probably agree with those.

A guy who's beaten should escape criticism simply because someone else was beaten worse.

I may take a look and jot down my version of it just to compare it to. See how close our perceptions are.

...The lack of interest in Clabo we showed (wouldn't pay him $3.5M) suggests that Parnell is being put on the depth chart as first stringer for now. Any vet we go after will be looked upon as a 2nd stringer/swing tackle...

What was it Jerry said on draft weekend about Parnell? That the strength coaches measured his punch as the strongest on the team? Or was it the strongest they'd measured? Whatever the tidbit was, it sounded a lot to me like the sort of thing Jerry says when they're looking to elevate a young player to the starting lineup.

We'll get Free to take a pay cut. Or we'll sign some one-legged Derrick Dockery of a RT to carry a helmet to practice for a year and pray that nobody gets hurt. Nobody likes to hear it, but Cook also played RT for two year in MIN.

This is actually what has been in the back of my mind. Is it the best case scenario, no, but is it something that could happen....yes. Cook's frame is much more suited to the outside, and being a jack of all trades, it could keep him around for a bit especially if we cut Free.

He's built more like a RT than a C, that's for sure. And his pass protection inside was ok. He's more of a third-string option along the lines of a Pat McQuistan than he is your swing OT.

I think Free will agree to a pay cut, and we'll end up keeping him. I'd rather, though, that the team had a better option for going in another direction. Even if we had the equivalent of a Leary on the roster at T, I'd feel better about rolling the dice. But I can't get myself worked up to even fake enthusiasm for a Darrion Weems.

With the Cap situation as it is, it is more and more looking like they will either cut Free or make him compete in camp vs Parnell. I would cut Free just on general principles and keep Cook who can fill in at tackle on an emergency basis.

Well I've been thinking this for a while about Cook, but hate to throw ideas like that around here cause of the obvious backlash, although I don't really understand why there should be one.

Seems some say he is an obvious cut, but he is the only guy we have that can play every position on the line (maybe not all that great, but as a short term fill-in we could do worse), plus he has experience....would much rather have him around then some of those other scrubs with 'potential'.

I don't really like keeping a guy around that has to take a pay cut (Free) because he will probably have a bad attitude.

When is the last time that Cook played RT?

I think he said it was the strongest that the strength coach had seen from any OL. Now presumably that would include Erik Williams, Logan Mankins and Larry Allen. If that is the case then Parnell packs some major power.

He was displace in MIN in 2009 after starting two years there. Not sure where all he played in his journeyman time between then and DAL.

I actually like Cook in a pinch. He is really a perfect backup player. The guy can play all 5 positions. You just kinda cringe when you see him getting a start.

I'm curious to see Darrion Weems in training camp.

I'm not sure that being a UDFA automatically means that a player can't be ready to play in his 2nd year in the NFL.

Weems played LT at a big time college program, Oregon. Based on watching his game footage at Oregon, I think he would be fine at pass-protection in the NFL. It appears that he would need to work on his run blocking.

As with Parnell, in order for Weems to have a chance to succeed at RT, the RG needs to be a quality veteran. I would be OK with Parnell as the starter and Weems as the backup if the Cowboys signed Brandon Moore (Jets) to play RG.

So how does Parnell do after they study his weaknesses?

Look at his weakness and work on it. You know the team mantra of "getting better".
