On Offense:
Doug Free is very athletic for LT. More aggressive than I anticipated…he jump out of his stance on one play and head butted blocker while engaging him. He is also strong – was beat to the inside but easily shoved defender toward Kosier

Davis pulled well

Colombo had a pancake block.

RedZone formation….Dallas had text book blocking – Free and Colombo sealed off edge, Kosier pulled to second level to engage WILL, Davis and Gurode stood their guys up and Deon Anderson blocked MLB ….Felix fumbles at the 1 but there was offside’s against Cincy.

Robert Brewster can not handle quickness on outside. Tries to compensate for lack of agility by taking steps back (does not engage at line) and allows defender to make quick move and close on QB who is very close at that point. His only shot at sticking is guard…but unsure of his strength.

Travis Bright – very limited in space.

Alex Barron – lacks adequate base. When Free engages he leans forward and gets both hands on defender and slows defenders forward motion. When barron engages he uses his long arms but defender easily pushes him backward but Barron has athleticism to recover and does same thing. He doesn’t trust his strength and just tries to survive. Free initiates contact while Barron tries to limit it. Free looks light years better than Barron. Barron strength is at run blocking.

McQuistan- actually played well. Huge guy and was one the few offensive lineman on 2nd team that neutralized the defender consistently.

Sam Young held up much better against same DE who abused Robert Brewster. I think Young is ahead of Brewster. Young just needs to get stronger but he definitely looks like a guy who can start one day.

Mike Temper is just bad. Beat badly on several plays and lacks any agility to recover.

McGee – cannon for an arm and looks poised. Bit erratic but which QB isn’t early in their career.

On Defense:
Bowen blew up a double team and hit Palmer as he threw…I believe he is upgrade over Spears. Bowen gets much better push than Hatcher. Bowen has the ability to blow it up sending offensive lineman back several yards where Hatcher (who did better later in game against lesser players) engages in too many stalemates. Bowen is deceivingly strong. Appears unblockable on several plays.

Wall is smart player – good run support and much more physical than I anticipated, Forced running back to cut inside for awaiting LB…contained outside well.

Butler might have some pass rushing ability but was really helpless against back up TE for cincy on consecutive running plays. Does not shed well.

Brandon Williams – has really nice studder step moves but like Butler he doesn’t seem to grasp run support well yet. Ware and Spencer needed to learn run support so Williams and Butler and probably right where they should be. Brandon is a starter somewhere in few years.

Danny McCray has major closing speed and definitely someone I will watch more closely. Also had interception.

Josh Brent is a load. Gets good push but can’t really use left hand yet. He wears Leon Letts number and leaves his shirt untucked just like Leon. Quick and strong and stunts well. Looks well coached. Might have biggest upside of all the back up defensive lineman.

Teddy Williams – really amazing guy who has been out of football this long and never played the position – amazing closing speed and turns hips well. Very fluid.

Players who impressed me the most: Doug Free, Stephen Bowen, Jamar Wall, Brandon Williams, Teddy Williams, Danny McCray, Josh Brent. Phillips was a monster in the game. As for Phillips injury it appears he actually hurt his knee during Donaldson fumble in second quarter…..Phillips got rolled up on and immediately grabbed his right night…but got up and walked away.

Wall?

Other than his pathetic attempt at tackling Shipley on the punt return, his pathetic attempt to cover Matt Jones numerous times, and his horrible coverage of WR Simpson which would have been a TD if not for an overthrown ball.

Other than that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?

Thanks Wood. Sounds like you know your stuff enough to offer some meaningful critique.

I agree on Bowen, he looked great out there...him and Phillips were probably Dallas' two best players last night.

I really disagree about McGee though - especially when you say he was poised. When that pressure came he really got antsy and wanted to run. They pointed it out a couple of times in the telecast but he didn't seem to look comfortable at all.

Funny, I thought Wall was hands down the worst player on the field for Dallas. I didn't see him do anything except allow completions and chase the WR.

I must be BLIND. Because I swore I saw McQuistan get blown up and run around about 43 times last night.

There are definitely some Wall apologists on this forum. Probably the Texas connection.

However, I like for my cornerbacks to be invisible - like Cletis Gordan.

wow, not sure why u think your analysis deserves it's own post but it seems mostly wrong (other than the obvious stuff).

Wall was awful, so was McQ.

Brewster was decent, not awful, and Wade praised him plus see the other thread. Brandon Williams showed potential but also messed up a lot.

Good job recognizing McCray at least

yeah, I'm not sure what he was watching on McQuistan.

Before Wall was covering Matt Jones he was matching up well against TO and Chad Johnson. He went for pick against Matt Jones and missed but I like his aggression and if you really look at the game...he is very physical corner. I try to watch the plays at 1/4 speed cause u get better sense of whats really happening rather than trying to absorb everything in just few seconds followed by Collingsworth often misguided observations. Collingsworth goes from loving a guy one play than calling him Drew Henson the next...that why i dont really trust him...he just throws things out there for attention.

If you wanna see aweful watch robert brewster get schooled by cincy DEs. I mean it was even close...he backed up...they ran around him..it was that simple. Young did much better against same DEs. McQ was better than i was expecting...trust me...i am not big fan of his. As for Brandon Williams...he had several QB pressures and had a int. I thought he looked better than Butler...who was getting swallowed up badly on several running plays by cincy back up TE but later in game looked little better.

Good stuff.

Agree 100% on Brewster.

Wall was ok, but he let his WR's get too much separation at times.

McQ will be cut soon.

Teddy Williams is a perfect practice squad kid.

Brewster was atrocioius. If that's considered a "good job" by out oline standards these days, Old Man Houck has really lost his marbles.

He backed up and a Cincy DE stunted inside to get pressure on our QB. That however should of been picked up by the interior linemen. The guard should have handed off his man to Brewster an picked up the stunting lineman but he didn't.

Brewster was assignment sound during the game and played well. He was in the game for almost 3 full qtr's coming in once the starters left and he stayed in the game till almost the midway point of the 4th. There is plenty of film on him to grade I hope somebody with the know how post all his plays with the replay iso's. If I had the ability to do it I would for sure.

Well when Wade is pumping sunshine up the ***** of all these 'Wade is the gospel' fans you are going to run around saying Brewster was good last night.

The guy looked like a high school player trying to block college players.

Whenever someone uses words like "fluid hips" or "poor base" or "footwork", most of the time they're using terms they don't know the meaning of but sound impressive to the layman.

His example of what was wrong with Brewster is a perfect example. Any tackle who consistently engages at the LOS on passing plays is going to get his QB killed but that was his main "negative".

Thanks Lombardi.

Me too. Geno Adkins ate his lunch.

Brewster

Beat cleanly to outside by Frostee Rucker (#92) on his first play …Alex Barron was also beat and his guy caused kitna to fumble the ball.

Brewster playing LT…fell down on running play matched up against Pat Sims (#90)

On next play Brewster failed to pick up stunt with defensive player getting in McGee face.

On next play…Brewster picks up wrong guy (picks up the blitzing linebacker – who Choice should be picking up) allowing DE Michael Johnson (#93) to get a easy sack. Choice gives Brewster some words after the play.

Failed to get his hands on DE Johnson who stunted inside and hit McGee as he tried to scamble.

Brewster did start to play better midway into 3rd quarter.

Brewster is kind of opposite of Barron in that he has good base…but once defender forces him to go right or left he ends up reaching for defender because he lacks lateral quickness due to his weight distribution…notice I didn’t say size because Brewster is listed at 320 (same weight as Free who is 2 inches taller)…it just that too much of Brewster weight is in his belly..which really affects his ability to move laterally.

** Will Barker who replaced Brewster in 4th quarter didn’t get beat…I hadn’t noticed that the first time I watched.

My main negative for Brewster is how slow he moves laterally. When Brewster was playing at RT...he was backing up to the point that his initial contact with defender was happening with QB right behind Brewster...thats a guy trying to buy time cause he cant get to the outside fast enough.
